Was just wondering how many Irish lads there are still floating around that have drifted off the radar after promising starts?

What had me thinking this was the Bosman transfers thread - saw the likes of Colin Doyle and Joey O'Brien. Doyle started in nets for Birmingham the year they came up into the Prem as I recall, but had a shocker on the opening day of the season at Chelsea and just totally disappeared.Disapprove Then O'Brien was looking really good for a while at Bolton, got injured, and that skinny Hunt fooker (don't even know where HE is now!) took his place.Disapprove

I'm sure there's a good few others....

always remember getting a train home after a game a friendly game i think before world cup 02 and was sitting across the way from foleys whole family, half way back to cork his old man got a call from mick mccarthy and they chatted for about 10 mins about the game,i think mick's gesture was fantastic, he took time to talk to a parent after a game even though the lad was in his twenties and it was a senior game for ireland.

They forgot to tell him to stop running during training at Hibs and he ended up in Swindon.
They say there is no substitute for pace but having some bit of ball control can be a huge asset aswell!!

He just came back from Stevenage and went straight to port vale to hook up with jim gannon.

Willo Flood has had injuries but he is too slight in my opinion, lacks the build to be a top player

Jon Walters will hardly be forgotten soon , he is playing week in week out for Stoke , one of their highest goal scorers this season , an Irish squad member and he's only 27....

Ronnie O'Brien rejected an international call up by Stan didnt he???

Stephen Carr and Colin Healy for me are the two main players who "got away" from the Irish set up , we didnt see the best of them which is a pity!!!

Joey O'Brien an excellent talent Ouch

I remember him well! Absolute hero in Champ Manager 99/00! Big smile I'm sure a Liverpool fan can confirm, but I vaguely remember him making his debut for Liverpool and they won 8-0 in the League Cup or something - then I don't think he ever played again for them!

Posted By: tetsujin1979
Date Posted: 04 May 2011 at 6:19am

Richie had terrible luck with injuries, was playing well on loan at Coventry, scored some absolute belters, and was on the bench for the 0-0 friendly VS Greece under Givens.

Think he broke his leg, which put him out for the season, and after a few games for the reserves tore his cruciate, so he lost the better part of two years of development.

Went to school with a mate of mine, said Liverpool wouldn't even allow him to have a kickabout on the street in case he picked up a knock

Didn't know where else to put this so I googled "forgotten Irish YBIG" and Bob's your uncle.

Recent article about a lad named Darren Grogan who played in Tottenham's academy and played senior football in Portugal before prematurely retiring.

Has good things to say about Paul Gascoigne.

Kenny McEvoy was another Spurs starlet, a Gareth Bale lookalike of whom big things were once expected. Still only 27 and now playing for South Normanton Athletic.

McEvoy got married at about 21 or 22 years of age and that was right about the time he started getting ideas of himself. He more or less demanded first team football and tried to play hard ball with Spurs. They told him to get lost so his contract was “mutually terminated”.

Played League 1 and 2 before going to Waterford United for a season and he didn’t bother his arse when he was there. Went back to England and was/is working a normal job.

McEvoy played his underage football with my cousin all the way up through the schoolboy teams with him. He was a talented player but thought he was a world beater and expected first team football when he was miles short of what was required. Mentally he wasn’t strong enough and that was what held him back. Well, that and his wife.
