You could almost bank on them banging in 70-80 goals a season between them!

Easily 70-80. Eto'o, Henry and Messi got over 100 between them in 08. They are two unbelievable players, it'll be a while before we see another of the same calibre.
Ronaldo has so much to thank Fergie and the people at United for what they did for him. There were loads of kids like him that just didn't make it, and pissed away their careers. Eg. Quaresma, Jaoquin etc..
One of his greatest attributes is his desire to be the best, and I'd say Fergie had a big role to play in this. The physical condition he is in is unreal. If he wasn't that athletic he wouldn't be half the player he is.

Pinch

Jesus Sweet Christ Al-f**king-mighty!

What way do people actually watch the game?

Do they honestly think that if Ronaldo and Messi played in the same team then they would each be scoring two goals a game?  That they would both be as influential in the same team as they are in their current positions?

f**king hell!  The basics of the game is really lost on some people.

But for some mystical reason only known to siralex messi and ronaldo could never gel in the same team and having them in the same team would automatically somehow take away from their individual brilliance for some reason

I cant believe i was so downright braindead to suggest otherwise

So Siralex, you are trying to credibly suggest that you can definitively ensure without a shadow of a doubt that messi and ronaldo wouldnt score anywhere near as many goals as they currently do if they played in the same team?

Can you gaze into that crystal ball a little deeper and send me on the lotto numbers- Cheers

I didn't say they couldn't gel in the same team you f**kin uber moron Viva.

And let me tell you - as thick as Baggio and Horsey and Tribal are.....you are the dumbest gobsh*te I've ever come across when it comes to ball!

You just don't seem to understand the f**king game at all!

Would Ronnie and Messi work in the same team, I'd say it's likely if the team was built around a wide system with Ronnie wide left and Messi wide right.  But would they both separately be as influential as they are in their current positions, banging in two goals a game and being the vocal point of finishing?  How is that even possible?

Look at how Rooney shone after Ronaldo left.  Do you understand how that works?  One person has to be the main man.

Expecting Messi and Ronaldo to be as influential as they are now if they were put in the same team is Football Manager bullsh*t!  One of them would have to take the mantle.  The two of them wouldn't be scoring goals for fun!

What a moron.

Yes I do think Ronaldo and Messi could scored 74 goals while playing for Barca. If Eto'o and Messi could I don't see why Messi and Ronaldo couldn't. Ronaldo is a far superior player to Eto'o. He would in my opinion score for fun at Barca along with Messi. They create thousands of chances.

My God - you don't know why I'm bringing Rooney in to it?

Are you that thick?

I'm trying to inform you that putting two top quality players in the same team means one's nose has to be put out of joint.  Saying Ronaldo and Messi would defo score 70odd goals in teh same team is f**king moronic.

It's teh equivalent of saying that Ronaldo and Rooney in the same team would scopre 70odd goals because Rooney scored 30odd last year as did Ronaldo.

But when the two did play in the same team, Rooney had to take a back seat to Ronaldo' brilliance.

Are you really that f**king stupid, that everything has to be broken down to you so simply.

What a f**king gobsh*te.  King gobsh*te you are!

I do think Ronaldo and Messi could scored 74 goals while playing for Barca. If Eto'o and Messi could I don't see why Messi and Ronaldo couldn't. Ronaldo is a far superior player to Eto'o. He would in my opinion score for fun at Barca along with Messi. They create thousands of chances.

Messi and Etoo?

Is that in the season that Etoo was so shockingly bad that he was booed by the Barcelona players?  So shockingly bad that the players even discussed not wanting to play with him.  So bad that he was sold at the end of it?

Are you saying Etoo and Messi formed a great partnership?  It ain't a good point?  How does that back up teh fact that you are certain that Ronaldo and Messi would shine in the same team.

I seen your point earlier, but ignored it as nonsensical.  Etoo was shipped out at the end of that season cos his attitude and perfromances weren't good enough.  How can you use him in that season as a reason to suggest that Ronaldo and Messi would fit in to the same team with no problems and continue the current form they enjoy in sperate teams whilst in the same team?

Posted By: Roberto Baggio
Date Posted: 10 Jan 2011 at 9:37am
are you not contradicting yourself a bit in the sense that if etoo was so bad and still combined with messi for 70 something goals then how many would the awesome Ronaldo get with Messi??

and please dont resort to name calling just answer my question

But your question is f**king sh*te Baggio.

How many would Messi and Ronaldo get if playing in the same team?  How the f**k am I supposed to know.

I tell you what I do know though.  Both wouldn't shine.  Both wouldn't be able to flourish in the same way that they do now at different teams!!  How could they?  How would their be enough time in a match for both players to dominate the flow of a game like they do now.

Read over the thread, see my point with Rooney.  He was only able to shine after Ronaldo left.  The two didn't really shine together at United, because only one approach can be taken.  Can you serioulsy not understand that?

To suggest Messi and Ronaldo would be still playing the same as they are now if they were put in to the same team is so nonsensical it's not even worth thinking baout, let alone typing out on a forum.  It makes no sense.  None whatsoever!

You gobbsh*te - sorry, I nearly goit through it without sl*gging you Baggio.....nearly. Sorry mate! x

Posted By: Roberto Baggio
Date Posted: 10 Jan 2011 at 9:47am

no one knows for certain how they would perform together or how many goals they'd get, if one of them would shine, both of them or none of them = another pointless debate

In my opinion they would get around the 70+ mark if playing for Barca.

Messi doesn't seem to care who he's playing with Villa, Ibra, Eto'o. He still performs.

74 goals for him and Eto.
68 for him and Ibra.

So I don't see why he wouldn't do the same with Ronaldo.

But at the end of the day we can't prove it so it's a pointless but enjoyable debate.

Ronaldo's record since joining Real is unbelievable. I'd have him back at United in a flash, but i still hope he wins nothing at Madrid. That is a possiblity given the quality of the Barca squad they face.

He is unlucky to be playing in the same era as Messi because he'd could've been the best player in the world more than once if Messi wasn't around.

As a United fan, I cheer on Real under Jose with every kick of the ball.

When Jose takes over at OT next summer or the summer after, he will have won The Champions League, The UEFA Cup, The Premier League, Serie A and La Liga.

.....and to think some United fans don't actually want him to succeed Fergie.

Unlucky for Ronaldo himself alright - but it's good news for the sport if you ask me. Messi is a much better ambassador for the game than Ronaldo. There's a YouTube clip called 'Messi never dive' (was on classic youtube on the Guardian website recently), but if you have a look at it it's unreal. The amount of times he gets hacked out of it and just keeps on going is amazing. He looks genuinely dissappointed when the ref does give a free - he just wants to keep on playing like a little kid! Contrast that to Ronaldo, who plays with a chip permanently branded onto his shoulder. Anyway, don't want to get into yet another Messi v Ronaldo thing...

Whilst I think Mourinho would do a great job at United, I can certainly understand why some fans wouldn't want him there. United have historically played very open and attacking football - Mourinho sides are generally fairly lacking in the entertainment department and pride themselves on rock solid defences and an ability to grind out results. I don't think that sort of attitude would be too appealing to some of the United hierarchy to be honest.

To be fair, with the individuals they have got it would be an almost impossible task to make them as 'functional' as his previous teams!

Take a look at his previous three sides - Porto, Chelsea, Inter. All played a very similar style and used a similar system. He had Eto'o playing back in left midfield for a lot of the season for example.

I really don't think it's a myth. And if you believe it is a myth, I certainly don't think half a season at a club full of brilliant attacking individuals is going to dispell it.

That's Man United's problem.

Jose obvioulsy wants the United job.  If he's offerred 10mill a year to go to Eastlands, then he'd need to find out from United if they want him or not.

Ferguson has said he won't be managing past 70 - he turns 70 at the end of this calender year.  I wouldn't be surprised if this was his last season.

He's surpassed Busby's rieign..

He's gonna win United their 19th title.

It's his 25th year in charge.

He's 70 this year.

All suggests that he could call it quits this summer!

The only thing is I cant see Jose leaving Madrid until he's won either the league or Champions League with Real. If Fergie stands down at the end of the summer, which I dont think he will, I dont see Jose coming over. I Fergie waits one more year then i do. It wouldnt surprize me if Fergie and Mourinho have a "gentlemans agreement" for Mourinho to take over eventually the way he goes on about UNited and returning to England one day...

It sure is United's problem.

Replacing a manager of Ferguson's calibre, who knows the club inside out, is an almost impossible task.

Mourinho is probably one of the few managers in the world who could handle the pressure - and handle it well. I just think his style of play may go against him when it all boils down to it.

I accept your list of reasons why Ferguson may call it quits this summer, but something tells me he'll be staying for a while yet. The sport is completely in his blood - I have a feeling he'll be involved until he's six foot under!

Would be very surprised if fergie packed it in at the end of the season

I think 20 league titles would be a huge achievement that he would like to get to

He recently said

"Retirement is for young people," Ferguson said. "I'm too old to retire. I would have nothing to do.
"As long as my health is good, I will carry on - my family will make this decision."

He does a lot of excersize and is in good health so unless that changes he will stick with it

Cant really see fergie playing golf and doing a bit of gardening to keep him occupied

Good point. And don't forget the defences in La Liga are muck so they're bound to be banging in goals with the quality they have up front. The knock-out stages of the CL will be interesting when the top two Spanish sides meet more organised defenses (apart from Barca who meet Arsenal first LOL).

I think though how he has impressed at Madrid only highlights how good a player he is, that he can do it at another club. (Before people jump down my throat, thats not a slight at Messi, just an observation)

Got to kind of agree with Alex here in that no one knows how the two would play together

For me, Messi is streets ahead as a footballer.
Ronaldo has more physical attributes and scores plenty of his goals from dead balls

Messi's goals neaqrly all take your breath away
Little one twos, team goals, brilliant finishes

Also, his goals record stands at something like 72 in 75 games??? Can someone confirm

I'd also appreciate if one of you computer nerds could get the assists stats

For me, Ronaldo sometimes fails to play in the big games.
Outshone by Messi in the Champs league final and, well, pissed all over against Barca a few weeks ago.
I just feel that if you take Ronaldo's right peg away, you lose a lot.
In short, Messi is a far better all round footballer

PS...Alex tone down the personal abuse

Not only is Cristiano Ronaldo the current best player in the world, he's the greatest individual player I've ever seen.  Some posters have ben mentioning his dead ball goals as if it's dismissive of a skill that Messi clearly doesn't have.  Also Ronaldo has now done it in two different leagues and on the international stage.  Messi has only proved to do it in this Guardiola set up.

Also, Ronaldo was a better player than Messi when United beat Barca over two legs in 2008.  Messi didn't exist for the entire 180minutes in those games.  ANd Ronaldo has done it Champions League finals and FA Cup Finals - and has proved to be immense in a lot of big games - especially when at Man Utd.  His game-game performances were brilliant.

Messi is part of a great team.  Ronaldo wins games on his own - I personally think the two are incomparable.  Both are obvioulsy just as effective in the current set ups, but take Ronaldo out of that set up and put him in another and he would be just as effective.  Messi on the otherhand is not likely to be, seeing as he hasn't proven to be ...and when he plays for his international side in a different set up he fails to have an impact.

The goals stats are constantly brought up and we all know the two are a little difficult to divide in that way...but they really don't mean much.

The truth is, if Ronaldo was taken away from Madrid and taken away from Portugal it would make the world of difference.  His presence is that good. Messi away from Barcelona and Argentina wouldn't make much of a difference would it?  yes he's part of that brilliant set up at Barca, but I think he's just part of it.  It works as system - he's not as great an individual talent as Ronaldo.  I don't even thin it's close.

Messi is a much, much, much more likable bloke.  But he isn't  a better individual footballer nor does he have a bigger impact on the team he plays for than Ronaldo.
