With just one week left until the start of the new Serie A campaign, former Italy star Christian Panucci has decided to hang up his boots following a senior career spanning 19 years.

�After much thought and deliberation I have decided to retire from football," the 37-year-old told SkySport. �There were a number of offers from the USA but without the right motivation it is only right that I hang up my boots.

�Becoming the first Italian to win the Champions League with Real Madrid has to be the greatest moment of my career.

�I would like to thank all my former clubs, teammates, coaches and especially Fabio Capello for some incredible years together.�

He was a great full back in his pomp.
