Coventry City have appointed midfielder Lee Carsley captain for the forthcoming Championship season after his return to the club.

The 36-year-old, who played for Coventry between 2000 and 2002, rejoined the Sky Blues earlier this month after leaving Birmingham City.

Manager Aidy Boothroyd said: "As soon as I knew we could get him in I decided he would skipper the team.

"He a natural captain and won't take anybody not giving their all."

Boothroyd added: "Any captain has to lead by example and if you look at Lee's track record it shows he is used to playing in winning teams.

"Not only will he be our captain but he'll help me, the players and the staff build a character here that doesn't accept mediocrity and push people to be all they can be."

The former Republic of Ireland player said: "I left Coventry shortly after they were relegated from the top flight, so I've some unfinished business here. Hopefully I can leave the club in a better position than I did before."

Attaboy skip! Clap

Coventry boss Aidy Boothroyd has praised veteran midfielder http://uk.eurosport.yahoo.com/football/lee-carsley.html - Lee Carsley 's role in the promising start to the Championship season.

The 36-year-old former Republic of Ireland international has captained City to a win and a draw in their opening two league games following his summer move from http://uk.eurosport.yahoo.com/football/everton/ - Everton .

"Lee has always been a leader - he's not only a brilliant footballer, he's a brilliant captain who can influence others on the pitch," said Boothroyd in the Coventry Telegraph.

"He's been such a consistent player over the years and he's got better as he's got older. You always know what you're going to get from him over the course of a season and he has the knack of passing that on to other players.

"You need that sort of presence, you need a guy like that on the pitch to be able to dictate and organise."

COVENTRY CITY'S players can't wait to play alongside Marlon King, according to club skipper Lee Carsley.

The former Everton holding midfielder has been impressed after training alongside the striker for the past month.

And the veteran star says the Sky Blues squad are "desperate" to see King - who has just been released from prison after attacking a woman in a nightclub - pull on a City shirt.

He said: “We’re all desperate to get Marlon in. We see him in training and how sharp he is. He’s banging goals in and it would help us a lot.

“That’s no disrespect to the lads we have got because we have got some good forwards, but his quality is there for everyone to see.

“He has got that experience as well because he has been there and done it, and you can tell that he has got a point to prove.

"Obviously the spotlight is going to be on him when he comes back to see how he’s going to do but that’s the kind of player we need, someone who is hungry to prove a point.”

Carsley revealed that the on-going saga has been a source of frustration for the players.

He added: “It has been frustrating that he’s not been in the side yet but it is one of those where you tend to concentrate on the lads who are playing rather than the ones who aren’t available because it can take the focus away.

“But when you see a player like him walk into the building you automatically think, ‘yes, we’ve got a really good chance.’

“He’s been with us for a month or so and he’s fitted in with the squad. He’s a nice lad and hopefully the deal will get done.”

He comes off a bit salty here about his Ireland career. Dont really remember him shipping too much flack during his career with us. I think 40 caps was a decent return at a time when we had quality in the centre mid  position

I remember at the time thinking it was decent of Mick to give Carsley the few minutes against the Saudis. It's a shame he doesn't appreciate it. Players like Dunne and O'Brien didn't get on the field at all and never got to play in a world cup.

Kinsella and Holland were playing better than him at the time and deserved their places in the team ahead of him.

If anything, Carsley was a really underrated player. We had some good players in midfield at that point, but even then. I think Steven Reid only got 15 mins or so in 2002 World Cup

Think some harsh comments have been made above. He was a very able player and in another era, would have started many more games rather than a sub introduction.

He was given plenty of unwarranted flak by a section of our support purely for not being Roy Keane. Very capable player.

That's irrelevant. Keane was a magnificent player and any team would be poorer for his absence. Carsley was generally his replacement when he was injured or absent for other reasons. He got plenty of abuse despite being a reasonable replacement who generally did a decent job. The fact he couldn't dominate a game like Keane could was no reason for the level of criticism he took. It was generally lazy analysis.

Average midfielder gave his all for Ireland, always behind Keane, Kinsella and Holland; his handball against Turkey in qualifier will probably what he'll be most remembered for in a green shirt unfortunately.

Posted By: Left foot
Date Posted: 17 Aug 2020 at 3:27pm
He was always going ro be behind Keane for the holding midfield role.

With Holland and Kinsella playing well for their clubs, I think he was a little behind them with regards to getting the ball forward.

Carsley was a good player though, and offered the team a good midfield option and read the game well. However we had more options back then, if he peaked in his playing career 5 years ago, he would have been capped far more times. Feel he was a better option than Artur and Whelan, couple that with Mccarthy being injured...

Posted By: FREEWHEELER
Date Posted: 18 Aug 2020 at 11:53am
He was unlucky with that handball and the stick he received after it most unwarranted. John O’Shea escaped similar criticism for a way more blatant concession of a peno at home to Israel in that horrible 2-2 draw at home.

I can’t criticise Carsley’s stance on WC2002 when he was away from a Down’s Syndrome son and his wife pregnant, it’s called perspective and priorities.  There are things way more important than football and I wish the chap well and he always gave his all when he did play. Not getting a reply for offering his services as a coach to the FAI is no surprise however. 🤬

He was held in very high regard for his Coaching (and character) at Brentford, such that they offered him  the position of Head Coach after he had stepped in as Caretaker.

However he turned it down, since he had a son with Downs Syndrome at home in Birmingham and he prioritised that over a f-t job in management, with all the demands on his time which that would have entailed.

I believe that his subsequent jobs were all p-t and/or Midlands based, but now that his son is 21 (22?), maybe he feels he can now meet the demands of his latest position?

Either way, he's an admirable human being:
