I wonder if Serbians bully and browbeat Albanians into wearing something to honour their dead soldiers, or if, perhaps, the Turkish pressure the Armenians into wearing a symbol to pay tribute to their dead soldiers.
Some of it may be ignorance, but if you explain why you don't want to wear it, like James McClean articulated so well, and they still don't take it on board, then there's an awful whiff of genetic superiority off it - which is an insult to the soldiers who fought back against similar notions during WW2. Why would anyone want to honour something or someone that's responsible for committing war crimes and decimating the population of a country all over the last 175 years. There's a lot of similarities between the "population control" over here and the attempted mass eradication of the Jewish people less than 80 years later yet nobody ever talks about it. As Claret Murph would say, hummmmm........

Good piece.

Don’t know who the journalist is but this is the best article you’ll read this weekend on both the sad…& yet strangely comical state Britain finds itself in.
An article that combines “mascot one-upmanship”, Spitfires & Bruno Brookes nails it. Edited by Double Maxim - 15 Nov 2021 at 12:00pm |

Donna Traynor left because the BBC planned to alter her working terms, it is suggested in today's Irish News. The poppy dispute was some years ago. This employment tribunal should get a lot of press coverage if and when it happens as she is well liked and highly regarded by other journalists and pretty well everybody that knows her. Chances are the Beeb will settle out of court to avoid bad publicity. Rumours are that they are a toxic employer with a lot of bullying problems.

Apparently they tried to shunt her onto the radio bulletins rota though there may be a lot more to it than that. On the face of it, looks like a breach of contract and constructive dismissal case.

Writing in the Daily Mail, historian Dominic Sandbrook condemned the "poppy fascists" whose "culture of bullying" saw actress Sienna Miller vilified on social media when she appeared without a poppy on the Graham Norton Show. This behaviour contradicted the message of the poppy and did a disservice to the sacrifice of those who died in the name of democracy and freedom of expression, he added.
Others object to the length of time some people wear the poppy. BBC presenter Evan Davis tweeted in 2010 that he approved of the symbol but questioned "whether the long 18-day poppy season reduces impact". A spokesperson for the Royal British Legion says the poppy "honours all those who have sacrificed their lives to protect the freedoms we enjoy today, and so the decision to wear it must be a matter of personal choice. If the poppy became compulsory it would lose its meaning and significance. We are thankful for every poppy worn, but we never insist upon it, to do so would be contrary to the spirit of Remembrance and all that the poppy stands for." Good man Dominic. |

Seen an ad on some channel in work the other night for the poppy and it had some soldier that was seriously hurt somewhere saying how the Brit Legion helped him so much then he listed his tours of duty, Iraq Afghanistan and of course Nawvin Island.

Some fella on the tube begging the other week. Hint of an Ulster accent. Went on to announce how he has served in this, that and the other and ended with Ulster Defense Regiment.

I'll caveat this story with the fact that the bloke didn't look old enough to have been in a regiment that disbanded in 1992.
