Iain Dowie has a degree in engineering, and worked for British Aerospace in some engineering capacity in his non league days. I have no idea why I know that LOL.

Brilliant! LOLLOL

While I am in here I feel Steve Palmer is worth a mention, I am sure the Watford and QPR contingents on here are well aware of him. He is regularly listed as the only professional player to have studied at Cambridge, I don't think any have been to Oxford either, where he also played first-class cricket for the University side.
I believe his degree was in computer software.

The legendary Steve Heighway has a degree in economics and politics. The politics part greatly helped him hone his left winger skills.

Patrick Bamford is by all accounts quite smart and not your stereotypical footballer.

David Wetherall was a bright fella also from back in the 90s.

The current breed certainly would not appear to blend in at a MENSA convention.

Are England too thick to win anything?
Good article comparing the English culture to the Europeans.

Totally agree. David Forde says as much in his documentary.  Foreigners drink wine. Englanders guzzle pints.  Graeme Le Saux was an outcast for reading The Guardian, when his team mates were reading childrens comic books.

''You can't prepare for penalty shoot outs''.   I still laugh at this.

Its the same with the Irish team tbh.  A lot wouldn't be the brightest.

Derek McCarthy - Univ Limerick, Univ. of Cumbria  and Univ of Central Lancashire

This article about Limerick's U17s Coach joining up with the HK Jordan U23s to prepare for AFC U23s qualifying round and Finals.

During a footballing career including Limerick FC, Galway Utd, Waterford Utd and Limerick 37 Derek was studying at University Limerick and placement to Blackburn Rovers Fc where he continued his Applied Science Bachelors at University of Cumbria.  He hung on in England, stayed with Blackburn before moving as Head of Sports Science to Preston North End where he completed his BA from Univ of Cumbria.
Every the man for the walls of academia he worked as Strength & Conditioning consultant at Myerscough University near Preston while completing a Master in  Sports & Exercise at Univ of Central Lancashire in Preston.

He returned to Limerick FC, the article suggests a contact got him interested in the Jordan U23 coaching job. He may be at a loss end atm but his CV, like his organised defences won't show any gaps.

Yeah but for a footballer that is the equivalent of being Einstein discovering gravitational waves
