Interesting article, this bit in particular. Wonder who this was? (Ferguson at a guess)

It is simply much more lucrative for a player – and therefore his representatives – to play international football for England. To illustrate that fact: we know of one Irish underage player who was offered a five-figure sum by a boot manufacturer at the age of 16 if he agreed to declare for England on the spot. (The player declined, as they only wanted to play with Ireland.)

Interesting article alright. The wording suggests it's a player who is playing underage for Ireland still, so possibly not Ferguson, but who knows.

The key thing for Ireland here is to identify Irish eligible players and get them their Irish passport at as young an age as possible. This is beneficial for Ireland because in terms of the rules it means that granny rulers that go on to play underage for England (or another country) aren't then tied by playing underage for that country after their 21st birthday. Then for the 95% of them that don't make it to the England senior team, they're still eligible for Ireland.

But it's also beneficial to the player as a contract negotiation tool with clubs as explained in the article. So it's a win/win for everyone involved.

Actually playing for Ireland at underage is almost secondary to having the passport at an early age in it's importance to us in terms of securing dual nationality senior players at this point.

Fair play to him if it was him, as a lad born in England.

It's an interesting one.

A five figure boot deal is big money if you think you won't go on to have ab overly successful career in the game.

In Fergusons case, he'll be going for 100 odd million in a few years time and will make millions regardless of who he plays international football for.

Someone like Joe Hodge who isn't good enough to play for England might make more money over his career by being a big player for Ireland.

If you look at the kind of money mediocrities such as Hendrick and Arter are raking in with the modest career performances , raising your profile with an Ireland career can't pay off too badly.

Quality little player but considering he’s only just dropped his father’s name to change it to Gore a couple of years ago at 16 suggests he might not be following his father.

Scotland haven't developed a centre half in about 30 years, he probably fancies his chances of breaking into their squad over ours.

Interesting one, I guess the fact he was left out of the last U21 squad despite playing regularly for Crewe at L2 level and three 2004 lads Abankwah, Alex Murphy and Grehan were selected ahead of him probably helped make his mind up.

He doesnt look a devastating loss by an means, as asides from those three, Lawal, Mc Nulty and Roughan, who were in the last squad, we also have Adegboyega and Negru who both seem to be doing well at Norwich and Oxford respectively, while Andy O might be dropping down if he continues to miss out on Forest matchday squads.

Anyway, we have plenty of lads in the 22-25yo age range looking for a chance also (Cashin, McGuinness, Scales, McNally), while both Collins and O'Shea are already well established squad members. Good luck to him.

That U21 Éire cap will mean more to him than 50 senior caps for Scotland.

Would he be eligible for us?

Jason qualified through a granda from Down (I think) - does the eligibility extend to great grandparents?
