I hadn't heard that before about Martin Keown. His son Niall did declare for Ireland and played underage but has never reached the same heights. Still knocking about in Scotland and was reported to be switching to NI some time ago in the hope that getting international recognition would be easier.

He will be good enough for England, havent seen a striker as young and as potent in front of goal since Rooney burst on the scene. At least we have very good options coming through our own system which means it wont be as much of a blow.

England's young attacking options are light years ahead of irelands. Greenwood(18), foden(20), sancho(20),  Rashford(22), Hudson-odoi(19), Abraham(22) are all elite players.

Most england u21s would walk into the ireland senior team. Our best prospect is Connolly and although he looks very good he's nowhere near the england players... yet.

Not having players with very strong irish connections like delap opt for us is a massive blow to our team.

Honestly, we messed up on this one. We should have been tracking this Delap sperm since Rory slung it 40 yards across the room into his mrs
You asked if I'd be anyone from history, fact or fiction, dead or alive:
I said "I'd be Tony Cascarino, circa 1995"

Im well aware Englands options are much better im just saying we have some good young talent coming through also, Delap would be great but we have Parrott, Idah, Connolly, Obafemi all doing well so the future is looking decent for us along with others like Odubeko, Evan Ferguson and Zefi all looking like they could make breakthrough aswel.

Hopefully its not a false dawn for us which has happened before

We've never had this amount of attacking talent come through at one time before, ever. I get the need to not overhype things, but there's no point pretending we're not in an unusually fortuitous situation either.
We're decent enough..

Really?

Never heard that, I believe both his parents were Irish and they ran an Irish pub somewhere (could be wrong though).
Yeah, Keown was a studio analyst on TV3 for their Champions League games, and mentioned it one night when they were discussing eligibility.

Didn’t he also state at one time, though, that he would have chosen to play for Northern Ireland if it came down to it, think one of his parents is from up there, something in the back of my mind from a few years back is telling me that?

Kenny says he is examining all players eligibility and obviously has been leaving no stone unturned.

The question was put to him in the Slovakia squad presser. Does look like he will come back in for all these players. good news. PLaying pool is a huge problem for us. more is always better.

Yeah the problem with this delayed play-off is that Kenny had to treat the two NL games as prep for that.
So no real chance to bring in many new players and test the waters.
Then this squad just announced is for the Slovakia match and if we win that, the two NL games after it will be prep for the final so again, will be no real chances for new faces, hence the predictable squad we see today.

Now if we don't make the final then the Nov NL matches can be used for some level of experimenting with new players but the issue there is that the U21's have a key must-win home tie with Iceland, so he will likely leave good players there to contest that.  I'm thinking O'Shea, Obafemi, Smallbone etc.

Can't really argue with his approach.

Is it, though?

If players like Bamford and Redmond want to play for us, great.

Lads like Smallbone and Hodge aren't ready yet but if they turn into excellent PL players and stick with Ireland, great.

If Delap has a reawakening that makes him feel more Irish than Brendan Behan, great.

If it means we end up with players like Will Keane declaring for us en masse, then it's not going to make a dent in our fortunes.

The vast majority of English born players who go with us won't take much persuasion. Lads like O'Dowda and Christie were pragmatic about their intl aspirations, went with us, and have about 50 caps between them already. That's who we're always going to get. Solid mid-table Championship pros.
