He could have brought John O'Shea and probably should have brought Denis Irwin given that Harte wasn't fully fit (I know Irwin had retired from international football at that stage).

Delap's best years seemed to be the early years in the premier league with Stoke. Surprised he didn't get more action then (think this coincided with Trap's conservative selection policy).

Harte was fit, Dunphy claimed on television that he went down with cramp and that's where the myth started. Harte said in an interview later he'd never had cramp in his career

Delap played mainly as a wingback at Derby but he moved into midfield at Southampton and played there subsequently at Sunderland and Stoke. He was very versatile, sometimes playing occasionally as a central defender and even a striker at Derby. Maybe that counted against him somewhat.

He said himself he wasn't 100 per cent. See Dion Fanning article from 15 June 2002. Had to get injections in his foot and it went numb after 25 minutes into games.

Link not working!

My memory of it was that Harte didn't look right in that tournament and was probably our weakest link in most of the games. Whether that was a fitness issue or a lack of form I can't remember.

Surely one of our most overrated players of recent decades, too.

Yeah I vaguely remember him playing as a striker for Derby. You would think the versatility would be a bonus when picking a squad for a tournament but it certainly didn't help him in 2002. Would he make the starting 11 now if he was in his prime?

always thought with his throw ins he would have been a great option to have on the bench when chasing a win.... Scored probably the best goal scored at st Mary's

O'Shea didn't break in to the United team until the following season. He had barely made a senior appearance for them if any before the 2002 WC

O'Shea made his United debut in '99. He started to break through in the 01/02 season and was pretty much a regular by the 02/03 season, so was obviously 'ready' at the time of the World Cup.

f**king hell forgot about that one. Some hit

Always like Delap, think timing wasn’t ideal for him. He would have excelled under trap

Only six of those in 2002, and only once did he start.
United played 58 games that season. He played in less than a quarter of those.
Regular.

You would have thought so.

Problem for him was that Trap didn't pick him.

Regular.

I said regular in 02/03. He made 52 appearances during that season, with 38 of those starts. He started to break through the previous season and was clearly a very promising young player.

So yer saying Mick didn't bring a promising young player to an important series of games.

Great that it's all changed since those days.

LOL

And he's even more conservative now. I guess it happens to us all as we get older. Even given the obvious question marks over him, I can't wait for Kenny (a mere 48) to take over after so many years of ageing, burnt-out, tired, cynical, negative coaches looking for one last payday.

you said "regular by 02/03", not "regular in 02/03"

In fairness O'Shea was just a centre-back at the time, his versatility hadn't become an option. We had Breen, Cunningham, Staunton, O'Brien and Dunne all playing fairly regularly at the time. World Cup came a year too early for O'Shea
