3/8/23 Europa Conference League Jake Doyle-Hayes - Hibs 6 Industrious would be the word to describe Doyle-Hayes' outing. Limited Inter to all but nothing going forward, though his passing wasn't at its best. 4/8/23 Championship Gavin Bazunu - Southampton 6 Faced no shots on target in first half. Gathered well from a tricky Manning back-pass and distributed quickly and effectively to a breaking Edozie. Ryan Manning - Southampton 7 More touches of the ball than any other Saints player in the first half (97). Tidy in possession and ended with second most passes of any player. Will Smallbone - Southampton 8 Constantly on the ball, giving and going with both back to his goal and back to the opposition goal. Really impressive player under Martin. 5/8/23 Championship Sammie Szmodics - Blackburn 8 Wonderful energy about him throughout the game and was a real nuisance for Albion's defenders. Intercepted the ball and then set up Leonard for the goal straight from kick-off. Jayson Molumby - West Brom 6 Played in a more advanced role having overcome the injury niggle which meant he wasn't risked at Bolton. Chased down the Blackburn defence and was often the man meeting the deliveries from out wide, but he couldn't produce the finishing touch. Max O'Leary - Bristol City 6 He was certainly busy in the second half but, in truth, a lot of what Preston threw at City was off-target. Bar one corner which he misjudged, his handling was solid throughout, although there were also a couple of loose kicks on the deck. That said, one sharp throw after he collected a free-kick nearly had Bell on his way. Jason Knight - Bristol City 5 A difficult debut for the Irishman in which he struggled at times to get up to the pace of the game and was nowhere near the ball of energy we have witnessed over the summer. Clearly needs games to build a sense of chemistry with his teammates. Undoubtedly the effort was always there, of course. Mark Sykes - Bristol City 6 Enjoyed a few moments down the right flank towards the end of the game but couldn’t quite muster the necessary end product. Darragh Lenihan - Middlesbrough 6 Swept up danger well for most of the match but began to look a little flustered as the game became stretched late on. Shane Duffy - Norwich 6 The grimacing emoji on his social media after the game demonstrated a nice line in self- deprecation. The centre back's aberration was ruthlessly punished by Delap to gift Hull an opener they did not deserve on the balance of play. Brought the ball down in his own half but fired a ball at Ben Gibson, stood in close attendance, that bounced into Delap's path, who held off Gibson's challenge to rifle past Gunn. But nearly made amends on his own terms when he headed Sara's free kick against the foot of a post. Blocked another goalbound Delap effort in the 39th minute. Was on the way down in the 59th minute when he rose to meet Sara's cross. Another late headed chance from a well-worked Marcelino Nunez free kick but miscued his header. Adam Idah - Norwich 7 Alive to the situation inside the penalty area, and instinctively on the prowl to adjust his body and poke the dropping ball beyond Ingram to spark bedlam at Carrow Road. Harry Vaughan - Hull 5 Struggled to get into the fast-paced affair with the game largely passing him by. Grew into it a little more in the second, but another big learning curve. Sean McLoughlin - Hull 6 Did what he was brought on to do, head and kick it when it was needed. Cyrus Christie - Hull 6 Came close to creating an opening at the other end, gave a free-kick away outside his own box but got away with it. Aaron Connolly - Hull 6 Good to see him back on the pitch. Took a clattering late on but got up and on he went. Mark Travers - Stoke 7 Alert through quiet first half, including smart low save from well-hit shot from Ben Wiles. Unlucky to be beaten by a messy goal at start of second half. Enda Stevens - Stoke 7 Eager to work with Vidigal down the left and steady defensively, keeping a handle on Ben Wiles in the second half. Kevin Long - Birmingham 7.5 Long produced a magnificent piece of defending midway through the first half to thwart Swansea after a right-wing cross was volleyed back across goal. Scott Hogan - Birmingham 6.5 Not all of Hogan’s touches were on point, but the striker was a good first line of defence. He pressed relentlessly and played his part in Dembele’s goal. Sinclair Armstrong - QPR 6 Had a real go when he came on, and could have scored. Georgie Kelly - Rotherham 5 Battled hard but for little reward. League 1 CJ Hamilton - Blackpool 7 Apart from a couple of loose passes and heavy touches during the first half, Hamilton looked bright down the right side. Eiran Cashin - Derby 6 The defender produced a couple of superb challenges with one on Stephen Humprhys the pick of the bunch. Carried on from where he left off last season. Strong as you would expect. Conor Hourihane - Derby 6.5 Sliced a shot wide as he drove forward in the first half and was neat and tidy in possession throughout the 90 minutes in what was his first game as the club captain. James Collins - Derby 5.5 The forward who forced a save early on from Sam Tickle as he worked hard and unselfishly across the forward line. Showed some neat touches and saw a shot blocked in the second half. Joe Rafferty - Portsmouth 8 Produced the best deliveries in the box of any Pompey player on the pitch and, unsurprisingly, conjured up the cross for the leveller headed home by Kusini Yengi. A class act when in the team and picked up where he finished last season. Anthony Scully - Portsmouth 7 The brightest of the attacking three who started the game and corner delivery far better than previous Saturday against Bristol City. Had some good moments but couldn’t open anything up. Peter Kioso - Peterborough 7 Picked up an early caution, but it didn't bother him. Played with great commitment throughout. Prominent going forward in the first-half when his crossing let him down. An obvious leader of a young team. Scottish Premiership Jonny Hayes - Aberdeen 5 Plenty of energy as always but the veteran Irishman struggled to get into dangerous areas down the left and on the rare occasion he did, his final ball let him down. 6/8/23 Championship Mark McGuinness - Cardiff 8 Slid in to deny Summerville a golden opportunity early on. A classy and dominant display from the centre-half. Good to see. Callum O'Dowda - Cardiff 8 Made the first Cardiff goal with a lovely run and pull back to Bowler. Stuck to his defensive duties fantastically well, too. Marcus Harness - Ipswich 6 Replaced Broadhead and worked hard to help protect the lead, without having the opportunity to shine. |

How do you manage to get enough footage to make these ratings? It’s impressive and I’m grateful for the posts when they are up but would love to know how you get enough clips of them to make a rating and comment?

They're not my own personal ratings, they're taken from the websites of local newspapers that cover each team - WalesOnline for Cardiff and Swansea, LancsLive for the Lancashire teams, Birmingham Live for the West Midlands teams etc. I just collate them here for information, I'm not personally watching all those games, I have other things to be doing! Sorry I probably should have explained that at the top of the first post as it is a new thread for the new season.

11/8/23 Premier League Dara O'Shea - Burnley 6 Lost Haaland for the opening goal. Kept battling away and put in some big blocks. Josh Cullen - Burnley 6 Kept running the hard yards and working tirelessly out of possession. Saw little of the ball but threaded the odd smart pass into the final third. 12/8/23 Premier League Evan Ferguson - Brighton 8 This kid has everything it takes to a be a superstar. He was only on the pitch for 10 minutes and he managed to grab a goal after going agonisingly close with a superb curling effort onto the post that deserved a goal. He's set for a fantastic season. John Egan - Sheffield United 6 United’s new club captain used every ounce of his experience early on, covering for Ahmedhodzic in one instance and then using the ball intelligently soon after. Showed excellent defensive instincts to move across and block Eze’s side-footed shot that would have tested Foderingham. Will have breathed a big sigh of relief after being dispossessed by Edouard in a dangerous area but luckily the ball rebounded for Robinson to tidy up. Championship Darragh Lenihan - Middlesbrough 6 Steady away at the back and nothing he could do with Coventry's third. Kevin Long - Birmingham 7.5 Long made one outstanding contribution to clear inside the six-yard box after Ruddy had parried James’ shot. The defender was alert throughout and has developed a good understanding with Sanderson. Scott Hogan - Birmingham 6 Hogan worked the channels and tried to combine with his teammates, but he was starved of service before being replaced by the eventual matchwinner Jutkiewicz. Mark McGuinness - Cardiff 7 (Star Man) Dominant in the air as you would expect, wayward at times with his passing, though. Won one header which presented Ugbo with a big chance. Hit the bar late on, too. Callum O'Dowda - Cardiff 5 Not like him to make such an error for Armstrong's goal, allowing Paul Smyth in behind him. Became more influential at the top end late on, did brilliantly well to set up Ugbo. Callum Robinson - Cardiff 6 Looked pretty lively when he came on and he started the move for Ugbo's goal. Had one late shot deflected wide. Sinclair Armstrong - QPR 9 (Star Man) Made his full debut against Cardiff last season and caused no end of problems – just like he did in this game. Finally broke his goalscoring duck. Showed great awareness to set up Paal’s strike with a smart low cross pass that deceived the Cardiff defence. Superb before limping off with cramp. Sean McLoughlin - Hull 7 Really unfortunate for Delgado's strike, the ball cannoning in off his back. Defended well and came close to adding a fifth late on. Aaron Connolly - Hull 7 Came on and got himself a second debut goal, not sure he could have asked for much more than that, or an easier one. Marcus Harness - Ipswich 6 Was brought on to run at Stoke's tired legs, which is exactly what he did. Exploited gaps and managed to keep the ball out of Ipswich's half, which is exactly what they needed to do. Almost felt like he slowed the game down at times, which worked perfectly for the Blues. Mark Travers - Stoke 6 Series of important saves, even if none you didn’t expect him to make, to keep Stoke in the game. Quick off his line when needed. Enda Stevens - Stoke 6 Penalised for block on Burns with free-kick that led to opener and given a few testing moments. Let cross in for second. Max O'Leary - Bristol City 6 Very hard to offer any kind of grade to the City keeper because, in truth, barring a few regulation catches and goal kicks he didn't have a tremendous amount to do outside of a late save to keep out George Saville's free-kick. Jason Knight - Bristol City 7 Is growing into the role and there were some fine moments, particularly when he lifted the ball over his head and dribbled into space. It's not necessarily his game but despite being relatively small of stature he's excellent in the air. Mark Sykes - Bristol City 6 Preferred over Harry Cornick but probably didn't do quite enough to fully justify that decision. Was a little static at times in attack but off the ball, worked extremely hard, as you'd imagine. Alan Browne - Preston 7 Battled away at both ends of the pitch relentlessly. Combined with Frokjaer for North End's second goal of the afternoon. A solid shift from the skipper. Will Keane - Preston 7 Luck came his way for the goal but he will take it all day. Isolated up there at times and service to him wasn't always the best, but kept chasing lost causes and looking for the ball. Gavin Bazunu - Southampton 6 Couldn't have done anything about the first two goals. Striker favourite for the third too. Got himself in a trap on the ball but was quick to clear when needed. A Norwich fourth was ruled out for offside after he made a good save but parried into danger. Another vital save late in fixture at 3-3. Ryan Manning - Southampton 5 Started a counter but was not capitalised on by teammates. Tried his luck from range but well over and a dangerous free-kick was crossed into the stands. Was among the top passers in the fixture. Mistake trying to clear in the area gifted Norwich's fourth. Will Smallbone - Southampton 7 Not as tidy and his progressive attempts were cut out in first half. His ball in handled for Saints penalty. Not offering protection to defence. Yellow carded for a foul when beaten in midfield. Created chances for his teammates again. Looked to shoot from range and forced corners. Jayson Molumby - West Brom 7 Had to work especially hard against the ball playing trio, in an area of the pitch where Albion were outnumbered. Demands high standards from his teammates - not afraid to let any of them know what he thought of the allowance of Swansea chances late on. Sam Szmodics - Blackburn 7.5 Had a disastrous first half, missing a penalty and losing possession cheaply for the opener, but showed real character to make amends after the break. Took his second goal very well to go round the goalkeeper and beat the defender on the line. Shane Duffy - Norwich 5 Got himself in such an awkward body position as the ball from Smallbone bent towards the centre of the Norwich penalty area. Tried clambering above both Ben Gibson and Stephens but clearly handled. Studded a half-volley into the side netting at the other end, from a floating Sara free kick. Same routine again in the 41st minute but planted a header behind at the far post. Came under pressure in a relentless final quarter. Big defensive header in the 82nd minute, with Gunn not making Ryan Manning's inswinging corner. Finn Azaz - Plymouth 6 Took over the right-sided 'attacking eight' role from Callum Wright in 69th minute. Like Luke Cundle, the on-loan Azaz will only improve with the more minutes he gets under his belt after not featuring much in pre-season while still at Aston Villa. League 1 Andy Lyons - Blackpool 7 Some positive contributions from Andy Lyons in both attack and defence, including his deflected effort in the first half. CJ Hamilton - Blackpool 7 CJ Hamilton's main contributions came in defence, but did see a dangerous ball intercepted and put behind for a corner during the second half. Eiran Cashin - Derby 6 Dithered on a couple of occasions when he needed to be more decisive which is normally not like him. But made a couple of blocks in the second half. Conor Hourihane - Derby 7.5 Got through a lot of work in midfield and his free-kick which Collins converted for the opener was an absolute peach of a delivery. Then scored the important second goal with a superb finish. James Collins - Derby 8 (Star Man) Scored a terrific header, worked incredibly hard along the frontline on his own, held the ball up well, linked up play and worked tirelessly throughout. Played well. Joe Rafferty - Portsmouth 9 (Star Man) The assist king! One from a corner and open play were the perfect flourishes to an afternoon where the right-back did the business at both ends of the pitch. Conor Shaughnessy - Portsmouth 8 Some debate about whether he deserved a starting spot after Tuesday night. Those questions were silenced by a really eye-catching display, with an ability to step out with the ball and prompt Pompey’s attacking play its hallmark. One defensive error was almost punished but an overwhelmingly positive display. Anthony Scully - Portsmouth 7 Had the bit between his teeth after his second-half introduction. Fizzed around with energy to help maintain Pompey’s relentless tempo. Peter Kioso - Peterborough 6 The right-back didn't shirk his duties, but he was given a hard time by Corey Blackett-Taylor who went past him too many times for comfort. The Posh right-back was a threat from set-pieces though. Stephan Negru - Oxford 7.5 Makes a good impression every time he plays and has a maturity beyond his years. 13/8/23 Premier League Nathan Collins - Brentford 5 A little unassured on his Brentford debut, but at least made his aerial dominance count a bit more the longer the game went on. |

15/8/23 League 1 CJ Hamilton - Blackpool 6.5 The wing back had some lively looking moments going forward, but was inconsistent with his final ball. Andy Lyons - Blackpool 6 Lyons was unable to offer too much going forward in the draw with Port Vale. Baba Adeeko - Wigan 9 (Star Man) What a full league debut...dominated the midfield and created the goal with a wonderful dummy and driving 50-yards run, before a perfectly-timed pass. Eiran Cashin - Derby 3 A long way off the level he was at last season and like the rest of the back three just seems to be a touch uncertain and it's a problem. Conor Hourihane - Derby 3 Swung a couple of corners in that caused Oxford a couple of problems, but the visitors' two sitting midfielders had an easy night of it. James Collins - Derby 3 Was perhaps lucky not to be shown a red card for a foul on Brown in the first half. Struggled to upset the two centre-backs although not helped by how bad Derby were with the ball in the first half in particular. Stephan Negru - Oxford 8 His toughest test so far, but he passed with flying colours. If his form continues, then Liam Manning has a tough headache when Jordan Thorniley returns. 18/8/23 Premier League John Egan - Sheffield United 5 Tried to get a head to Aurier's cross but it was too high. Easily beaten for pace when Awoniyi drove at him and skipped past him when he was caught isolated on a one-on-one but won plenty of the battle in the air. Flung himself at the cross for Wood's winner but got nowhere near it. Championship Jayson Molumby - West Brom 6 Struggled to perform at his very best in the first half as Albion created their own problems. Did break the lines and try to assist the wide players. The swing of his leg in the penalty area brought about the opening goal. 19/8/23 Premier League Nathan Collins - Brentford 7 Fantastic block in the first half. Looked defensively sound. Championship Finn Azaz - Plymouth 7 This was the sharpest Azaz has looked since rejoining Argyle on loan from Aston Villa just before the start of the season. He gave the Pilgrims some good attacking drive from central midfield in the first half and when he started to tire in the second period they missed that. Substituted in the 79th minute but should take encouragement from his showing in a fiercely competitive area of the pitch against Saints. Gavin Bazunu - Southampton 7 Almost gave the ball away early on but calmed down the situation with some good handling over next few minutes. Pulled out of a sliding challenge on Hardie well but the striker still went down – referee booked forward for diving. Claimed and punched crosses in added time to relieve pressure. Ryan Manning - Southampton 6 Organising teammates in possession and took on set-piece role. Kept Whittaker quiet in first half, making a match-leading two tackles. Great cutting square ball to Tella on restart to force a corner. Unfortunate to slip and allow Whittaker in for Hardie’s equaliser. Created match-highest four chances, tied with Adam Armstrong. Sam Szmodics - Blackburn 6.5 Took up a different role on the left flank following the red card but still drifted inside into more familiar areas. Worked hard to track back and help out the defence when Rovers were under pressure. Sean McLoughlin - Hull 6 Decent enough, didn't have a huge amount to do as the game wore on. Came off after Rovers' goal. Aaron Connolly - Hull 9 (Star Man) Changed the game. Two wonderful finishes to win the game for his side. What a threat. Max O'Leary - Bristol City 7 Possibly his best game of the season so far… yet he conceded twice. Such is the life of a goalkeeper. Made two telling saves, first from Koji Miyoshi in the first half and then Jordan James after the break, while his sweeping up behind the defence was also impressive. Jason Knight - Derby 7 Always on the move and trying to play on the turn, the Irishman looks more confident with each performance. Whenever he got on the ball in an attacking sense, City looked a little less predictable. Also made one outstanding tackle to rob Krystian Bielik which would have had Mark Sykes clear if not for Lee Buchanan’s rather blatant foul. Mark Sykes - Bristol City 6 Provided more of a consistent threat down the right than Cornick and fashioned some decent crossing opportunities but unfortunately couldn’t quite connect with his fellow forwards. After Dickie’s red card he was moved into a slightly more defensive role, limiting his impact. Kevin Long - Birmingham 8 Long was composed and confident alongside Sanderson and headed everything that came his way. The defender promised he had more gears to go through after re-signing for Blues and his first three performances this season have proved that. Scott Hogan - Birmingham 7 The striker put in his best display of the season so far to help Blues to three important points. He dovetailed well with Miyoshi in particular and dropped a little deeper once Jutkiewicz had been introduced. Mark McGuinness - Cardiff 6 One of those performances where you didn't really notice him but he was generally solid. Made one good block from a Kelechi Iheanacho shot in the first half. Maybe partially to blame for Cesare Casedei's late winner, but that might be harsh. Callum O'Dowda - Cardiff 6 It was the right call to play him in front of Collins for a game like this and he helped to keep the Foxes quiet down that flank. Tidy enough with the ball. Callum Robinson - Cardiff 6 Kept the ball well without being spectacular. Linked up place nicely enough. Darragh Lenihan - Middlesbrough 6 Produced a number of big blocks to deny Huddersfield efforts on goal. Sinclair Armstrong - QPR 8 (Star Man) Will be disappointed not to have scored – but he couldn’t have gone any closer as he was desperately unlucky when his first-half strike hit both posts. Was a constant problem for Ipswich’s defence with his pace and power and is great to watch. Alan Browne - Preston 8 Dropped into a deeper role alongside Ledson and put in another impressive performance. Swung some inviting set pieces in and won the battle in midfield. Will Keane - Preston 6 Constantly busy up there as the lone striker, even if the breaks weren’t always coming. Had a couple of chances first half and was relentless in his work rate. Mark Travers - Stoke 8 Down low to save drive from Martins and commanded his area and superb stop when Asprilla burst into area, pushing ball out of danger too. Well-earned clean sheet. Enda Stevens - Stoke 7 Showed skill and eagerness to overlap after switching to wing-back. Covered as left centre back for final 20-odd minutes. Luke McNally - Stoke 8 Aggressive and sharp, keen to venture forward from the right side of a back three. League 1 Stephan Negru - Oxford 8 (Star Man) Superb defensive display, with countless interceptions and brilliant blocks. CJ Hamilton - Blackpool 5.5 Blackpool just don’t seem to have enough of a threat out wide from the wing backs, with more required from Hamilton going forward. Andy Lyons - Blackpool 6 Like Hamilton, more is needed going forward from Lyons. Eiran Cashin - Derby 6.5 Is the subject of a lot of transfer speculation which can't be easy to deal with for a player so young. But in the times he was called upon, he was solid. Looked more like his old self. Conor Hourihane - Derby 6.5 Made one fine tackle in the first half that set Derby away on the attack and he delivered an absolute peach of a cross before the break that Fleetwood's keeper fumbled but nobody on hand to tap in. James Collins - Derby 5.5 Hit the side netting when he came on and looked to get involved. Joe Rafferty - Portsmouth 7 Drew the keeper into his only save of the first half when the right-back’s volley was tipped around the post. Again the Blues’ most effective crosser from wide areas. Conor Shaughnessy - Portsmouth 7 Nature of the match meant he had plenty of touches on the ball, a role he is comfortable with. Defensively sound, reading the game well to tidy up on rare occasions Cheltenham challenged. Anthony Scully - Portsmouth 5 Still looking for a sustained run of form and not quite gelling with Ogilvie as a left-sided partnership yet. However, continues to be glimpses and shows good work-rate and flashes of skill. |

24/8/23 UEFA Europa League Qualifying Round Jamie McGrath - Aberdeen 8 Only joined the club on Tuesday but made an instant impression when he came on alongside full back McGarry for the final 20 minutes. Showed some of the classy touches and passes that saw him thrive during his spell with St Mirren and almost capped off a fine debut with the winning goal until it was correctly ruled out for offside. 25/8/23 Championship Sean McLoughlin - Hull 6 It was an uncomfortable night across the board for the defence, and McLoughlin looked a tad unsure of himself, in parts. Blocked a lot, well. Aaron Connolly - Hull 6 Raced clear and you were waiting for the net to bulge, saw his shot well blocked by the goalkeeper. Fizzed one at the goalkeeper in stoppage time. Harry Vaughan - Hull 6 Tried to get on the ball and make things happen in the closing stages. Cyrus Christie - Hull 6 Little time really, though you could see why he came on with his pace against a tiring defence. Max O’Leary - Bristol City 8 His save to keep out Alfie Jones’ header basically kept City in the game, as he parried the ball onto his post. Then there was the tip over the bar from Scott Twine’s free-kick which you’d expect him to make but Aaron Connolly looked odds-on to score, when sent clear 1vs1, only for O’Leary to stand his ground and deny the Irish striker. They weren’t particularly outstanding saves but important stops in the context of the game, and his handling was consistently clean throughout. Jason Knight - Bristol City 8 His performance dipped in the final 15 minutes as Pearson re-jigged the system to the point he was almost playing in an unfamiliar forward role but the Irishman was brilliant up to that point; bright and inventive, with guile and aggression and looking to take men on either on the dribble or exchanging passes. Finding spaces at will, he’s looking more and more confident in the attacking midfield position, and combined especially well with Sykes. Mark Sykes - Bristol City 7 Fully justified his selection ahead of Cornick on the right and after a bit of a stuttering and disrupted start to the season looked the best version of Mark Sykes. Enjoyed so much space down that channel, helped by Knight and Tanner’s performances which ensured he gave Hull a constant headache and got round the back of Jacob Greaves on several occasions. That being said, he’d be frustrated he didn’t take that chance in the first half when he lifted over the bar from close range. 26/8/23 Premier League Nathan Collins - Brentford 6 Composed with the ball, commanding of it, the summer signing thwarted the threat palace posed expertly, until the goal. Evan Ferguson - Brighton 6 Like the other attackers, he struggled up against a solid backline. But he was denied by three great Areola saves. Decent acrobatic effort in the first half. Championship Kevin Long - Birmingham 6.5 Long was strong in the air and committed on the floor. He flew forward with the ball after winning one aerial challenge at a corner. Scott Hogan - Birmingham 7 The striker’s performances are improving and Eustace will be delighted to see him get off the mark. Hogan had a couple of other half chances that he threatened with and worked the channels well. Finn Azaz - Plymouth 7 You can see that Azaz is getting fitter and sharper all the time after not getting much game time at Aston Villa in pre-season before rejoining Argyle on a second consecutive season-long loan. There is still room for more improvement but the talent is there. Mark McGuinness - Cardiff 5 Missed a chance to open the scoring as he skied a golden opportunity from very close range. Didn't do much else wrong. Callum O'Dowda - Cardiff 5 Will definitely want to forget his miss in the first half. Probably should have put away another one early in the second half but played a great header down to Ugbo to set up the opening goal. Shane Duffy - Norwich 8 Commanding aerial presence to nullify Huddersfield's direct threat. Needed all his experience on the floor but did earn a caution for one foul too many on Koroma. Nudged Danny Ward under a booming clearance from Lee Nicholls. Just a fraction slow in getting out to Pearson for Angus Gunn's save. But tremendous instincts to lunge and block two shots from Koroma in and around the penalty box. Adam Idah - Norwich 8 Quite the impact as an early injury arrival for Sargent, before he himself departed with cramp after sealing the win. Linked with Barnes three minutes after the interval to race clear down the right, look up, and whip the perfect cross for Rowe to sweep home. Then had space and time to control Przemyslaw Placheta's turnover, draw Nicholls, and confidently slot inside the near post on his left peg. In between, there was another good piece of link up play with Fassnacht to get him down that right channel again, but the Irishman's cross was intercepted. Mark Travers - Stoke 7 Made some eye-catching saves in the first half, stopping two Flemming free-kicks and a Cooper header. Luke McNally - Stoke 6 A couple of advances from the right of a back three in first half and willing to make a challenge. Enda Stevens - Stoke 6 Shifted across to the left of a back three from the start but looked more comfortable tasked with pushing on from left-back in the second half. Alan Browne - Preston 8 Another top shift from the skipper, who moved into a more advanced role on the hour and provided a great assist for Hughes. Will Keane - Preston 7 Tireless work up there as the lone striker, chasing every lost cause and linking the game up. Saw a first half shot saved. Gavin Bazunu – Southampton 7 Not much he could do about Colback’s effort off post. Brilliant save to deny Chair moments later and bail out his defence. Another save right on restart to keep QPR at bay. Ryan Manning – Southampton 7 Early booking to stop a counter. Delivered an in-swinging crossing free-kick straight into Begovic’s hands. Assist for both Edozie’s opener and Armstrong. Completed the second most passes in the match. Dealt with banter from QPR fans. Sinclair Armstrong - QPR 6 Always a threat with his pace and looked to have scored before half-time only be adjudged to be narrowly offside. But it was a real learning curve for the young striker ,who found the experienced Jan Bednerak could more than match him in the physical stakes. Jayson Molumby - West Brom 7 Albion supporters love him because of his attitude, how hard he runs, his relentless energy and his snapping of heels. Wanted a penalty which wasn't given but created a first half chance. Darragh Lenihan - Middlesbrough 5 Steady performance but the central pairing were largely let down by their full-backs and central midfielders. League 1 CJ Hamilton - Blackpool 5 Hamilton did produce some bright moments going forward, but once again his final product wasn't good enough. Stephan Negru - Oxford 8 His growth game by game is remarkable and he showed a goal threat at the other end from set pieces. Tyler Goodrham - Oxford 8.5 (Star Man) Brilliant first goal and a clinical second. He is simply a joy to watch. Peter Kioso - Peterborough 5 It was a tough afternoon for the right-back and he picked up his third caution of the season. His unfortunate deflection of a cross led to the equaliser. Joe Rafferty - Portsmouth 6 Had looked sound defensively until a moment of controversy on 56 minutes when he was dismissed along with Jake Forster-Caskey following a scuffle between the pair while on the ground. Conor Shaughnessy - Portsmouth 8 (Star Man) A colossus in the air all match, on occasions heading the ball away while winning fouls. Growing into his Pompey role and certainly his best display for the club since arriving from Burton. Scottish Premiership Liam Scales - Celtic 6 Given the nod to make his first appearances in 18 months after spending last season on loan at Aberdeen, the Irishman did okay and might’ve done enough to keep his place for next week’s derby. 27/8/23 Premier League Dara O'Shea - Burnley 6 Produced one timely block when a Villa substitute raced through on goal. Josh Cullen - Burnley 6 A familiar story really. Neat and tidy in possession of the ball and carried out his defensive duties, albeit picking up a booking. John Egan - Sheffield United 7 Did well. Two important headers to clear the danger and also did well in the first half to get a block in on Haaland in the first half. Good interception in the second half just outside his own area.

31/8/23 Europa League Qualifying Jamie McGrath - Aberdeen 5 Looks way short of match fitness but that will come over time as the midfielder looks to get up to speed as soon as possible. 1/9/23 Premier League Chiedozie Ogbene - Luton 6 On for Doughty who had picked up a knock as he had a few bursts as he tried to find a late leveller. Only real sniff he had was a header in injury time that bounced thorough to Alphonse though. 2/9/23 Premier League John Egan - Sheffield United 6 Had a golden chance to put the Blades ahead early on but he headed Norwood’s free-kick at his former teammate Pickford when he had all the time in the world to pick his spot and generate some power. Caused United an injury scare when he went down holding his knee but was OK to continue. Handled the tough test against Beto well in the first half but had a more difficult time in the second against the powerful Everton man. Dara O'Shea - Burnley 4 A torrid afternoon dealing with those balls in behind. The whole team afforded Spurs far too much space. Josh Cullen - Burnley 5 Put in some strong challenges but often overrun in the middle. Provided the assist for Brownhill’s late consolation. Evan Ferguson - Brighton 10 (Star Man) Someone needs to confirm this man's age. Surely he's not only 18? He plays like a striker who's been in the game for years. Faultless performance and a first career hat-trick. The first goal was a poacher's strike, the second a superb strike from distance and the third a tad fortunate but you make your own luck in this game. Championship Kevin Long - Birmingham 6 Long conceded the free-kick which led to Nisbit’s opener. The Irishman clearly didn’t agree with the decision. Aside from a few poor passes in the first half, Long was fine in defence. Scott Hogan - Birmingham 5.5 The striker wasted a great chance to score for the third successive game from the penalty spot. He has now missed his last two penalties. Hogan pressed well and attempted a long range effort after the break, but he wasn't able to atone for his miss. Gavin Bazunu - Southampton 5 Will feel unlucky to have conceded a long-range shot, which deflected off Flynn Downes, for Sunderland’s second. Beaten at his near post for Sunderland's third. Wasn't helped by his defence for Sunderland's fourth after making a great save. Pulled off some saves to stop Sunderland from reaching a cricket score. Ryan Manning - Southampton 4 Unlucky not to win a penalty when tripped in the box by Bradley Dack. Lost his defensive battle against Ba. Will Smallbone - Southampton 5 Returned to the side after missing the last two games with injury. Part of a midfield that struggled to take control in the first half. Appeared to leave the pitch with an injury on 82 minutes. Max O’Leary – Bristol City 7 Was left fully exposed for the opening goal and had nothing else to do in the first half. Made a couple of comfortable saves from Cullen at the start of the second period and did well to react and push away Cabango’s header. Good performance. Jason Knight – Bristol City 7 Popped up all over the pitch and pressed well all afternoon. Saw a long-range effort narrowly fly over the bar before another effort was cleared off the line by Grimes. Scored in added time at the end of the first half but the goal was ruled out. Mark Sykes – Bristol City 8 Looked sharp back on the right wing and gave the Swansea defence no respite, cut inside Wood and slotted home coolly to make it 1-1, before he forced his way through three defenders and crossed for Bell’s goal. Could’ve had another when he reacted quickly to Bell’s deflected shot to convert acrobatically, but the goal was ruled out for offside. Electric at times. Jack Taylor - Ipswich 7 Full of energy. He was exactly what Town needed in the latter stages, pressing Cardiff into surrendering possession as they searched for an equaliser. He's knocking on the door to start. Aaron Connolly - Hull 7 A shot on goal inside a minute set the tone for a lively, and very open start. Chased, pressured, and never gave the Foxes defence a minute. Cyrus Christie - Hull 6 Made a real difference. Saw a shot turned away and then was fouled right outside the box. Sean McLoughlin - Hull 6 Came in to steady things in the final stages. Headed, kicked, and was a useful asset. Darragh Lenihan - Middlesbrough 6 Came close to equalising minutes before the break, but saw his header from a set-piece turned away by Begovic. Sinclair Armstrong - QPR 7 Worked hard up front. Missed a good chance when he didn’t react quickly to a ball in from Smyth. Had another sight of goal when he was denied by former R’s keeper Seny Dieng. Finn Azaz - Plymouth 7 It was hard work at times for Argyle as Blackburn often took the game to them so Azaz probably had to do more defending than he would have wanted, rather than showing his ability on the ball going forward, but he did come up with the first goal in the 27th minute with a deflected shot from outside the Blackburn box which wrongfooted goalkeeper Aynsley Pears. Shane Duffy - Norwich 5 Once Rotherham worked the overload to produce a Lembikisa cross too slow to react as he let Hugill get across him and glance a header past Gunn from six yards out. Although centre back partner Ben Gibson was stationed behind Duffy and his fellow defenders. Towering earlier header dealt with a free kick arrowing towards Hugill. Adam Idah - Norwich 5 Natural inclination was to drop deeper in search of the ball, but Wagner identified afterwards his side's failure to stretch the play in that sluggish first half. Teed up Barnes with a far post header, who had a volley blocked. Weak shot in the 39th minute in a rare sighter and with space to run in behind from Fassnacht's roll. Tidy lay-off for Sara to unleash a rising left- footed shot. Snapshot dropped on by Johansson in the 61st minute. Mark Travers - Stoke 7 (Star Man) A couple of vital interventions in the first half, stopping a deflected Browne shot and preventing a Stevens own goal. Enda Stevens - Stoke 5 Worked his way into some promising positions without always being able to make them count. Luke McNally - Stoke 5 A useful knack for being able to bring the ball out of defence with a turn of pace. Keane too free to score second. Alan Browne - Preston 8 Another real captain’s performance. Impacted the game at both ends of the pitch. Will Keane - Preston 9 Busy in the first half and kept believing the chances would come. Stuck his penalty away with conviction and was then in the right place, at the right time, to score the second. League 1 CJ Hamilton - Blackpool 8 Hamilton, who has received his fair share of criticism in recent weeks, provided the assist for the opener with a good ball into the box for Rhodes. A change in system certainly benefitted him. Baba Adeeko - Wigan 7 Got stuck in well and used the ball nicely, before switching to right-back in the reshuffle. Conor Hourihane - Derby 5 Kept his cool to score from the spot which put Derby ahead but had a job on his hands when Bolton started to move through the ball through midfield. Had to watch Bolton boss possession after the sending off. James Collins - Derby 4 Hard to make an impact when you're a man down. Eiran Cashin - Derby 4.5 After the drama of deadline day, he started the game on the bench but came on and did okay. Stephan Negru - Oxford 6 Not much to do in the first half but the Vale front line started to find joy in the second period. Tyler Goodrham - Oxford 6 Had the U's best chance in the first half forcing a smart save from the goalkeeper. Conor Shaughnessy - Portsmouth 8 Once overlooked, now an automatic starter, the Irishman continues to go from strength to strength. Another strong defensive performance. 3/9/23 Scottish Premiership Liam Scales - Celtic 8 (Star Man) Looked composed at the back despite being inexperienced in the fixture. Kept cool at times and defended well.

15/9/23 Championship Aaron Connolly - Hull 7 Had one great chance late on in the first half when he should have scored, another who kept plugging away and finally getting his rewards with the equaliser. Cyrus Christie - Hull 7 Came close to find an equaliser when his curling effort just went over the bar. Made a big difference. Gavin Bazunu - Southampton 5 Was left stranded for both of Leicester's first two goals. Did well to deny Wilfried Ndidi after 32 minutes with a save low to his right but the midfielder put it past him excellently for the Foxes' third. Ryan Manning - Southampton 4 Some occasional bright moments going forward but struggled defending against Kasey McAteer at times. Booked in the second half. Will Smallbone - Southampton 4 Went for a long-range shot that won a corner in the first half. Booked for a foul on Harry Winks. 16/9/23 Premier League Matt Doherty - Wolves 5 Back in Wolves gold after spells at Spurs and Atletico Madrid but couldn’t help team turn away the red tide. Scottish Premiership Liam Scales - Celtic 7 Fresh from an impressive Old Firm debut, the Irishman put in another assured display and may have done enough to merit a Champions League start in the Netherlands on Tuesday. Jamie McGrath - Aberdeen 4 Offered very little in his 66 minutes on the field and was replaced by Connor Barron. Championship Sam Szmodics - Blackburn 9 (Star Man) The match-winner. A brace, to follow his one at Rotherham. Took both goals really well and was at the heart of all Rovers' best play. Could've and should've had a hat-trick but Dieng denied him. Andrew Moran - Blackburn 6 Did his out-of-possession stuff well but didn't get involved much. Darragh Lenihan - Middlesbrough 6 Did a decent enough job on Gallagher. It was down the flanks and from deep Blackburn caused most problems. Max O’Leary - Bristol City 7 For about 60 minutes, O’Leary had very little to do other than sweep in behind the defence and watch as Naismith and Vyner did their job. Thereafter though he became increasingly important and influential, with some key punches under his crossbar and some pressure-relieving grabs. There weren’t any huge saves to make per se, but he was efficient with what he had to deal with. Jason Knight - Bristol City 7 Picked up where he left off, for club and country, with a typically industrious performance and some of his best work was arguably off the ball as he thundered into tackles and regularly picked the pocket of the opposition. If you were to be critical though, it’s that he wasn’t quite impactful in the final third but he continues to set himself a high bar. Mark Sykes - Bristol City 7 Desperately unlucky to see his first-half effort roll onto the face of the post after stealing his way past Alex Palmer in a first half where he consistently found space, and gave Erik Pieters an incredibly uncomfortable time. The Irishman didn’t enjoy the same freedom after the break and was replaced towards the end. Jayson Molumby - West Brom 6 Threw himself into 50-50 after 50-50, trying to drive Albion forwards in what was a disjointed first half showing. One of the few players who didn't show any signs of lethargy, perhaps benefitting from his run-out for Ireland. Shane Duffy - Norwich 7 Along with Ben Gibson had one or two uncomfortable first half moments when dragged deeper into midfield, and in getting to grips with the powerful Wesley. One occasion midway through the opening period ended with penalty appeals for Gibson's close attentions on the striker. Fine block later in the opening half to thwart Lyndon Gooch. Then had to get the timing spot on with his outstretched leg to foil Bae from Rowe's heavy initial touch that sparked a Stoke turnover. Cushioned an inviting ball for Idah to drill at Mark Travers. Adam Idah - Norwich 6 Had the type of chances, albeit small in number, to add to his growing tally this season. Tamely sidefooted at Travers when picked out by Duffy. Then skied over in the 57th minute at the edge of the penalty box from Giannoulis' set. Couple of times he pivoted away from markers to free overlapping wide players down both flanks; notably when Fassnacht's near post cross required Rose to take evasive action. Mark Travers - Stoke 7 (Star Man) A welcome presence after injury scare. Makes most saves look routine with good positioning. Should be furious at his defenders for soft play in front of him. Alan Browne - Preston 6 Made way at half-time with Lowe sensing some fatigue. Had equipped himself reasonably; pressing the ball and closing down defenders. Robbie Brady - Preston 5 His first appearance of the season after injury. Will want to get up to speed as quickly as possible. Finn Azaz - Plymouth 8 (Star Man) This was the sharpest Azaz has looked all season, and probably since he suffered a broken ankle last October during his first loan spell at Argyle. Now back for a second campaign from Aston Villa the midfielder has taken time to settle back into the side but he was a very creative presence in central midfield against Preston, which was definitely one of the positives to come out of the defeat for the Pilgrims. Sinclair Armstrong - QPR 6 Inevitably isolated after the sending-off. Did give Rangers an outlet up front with his pace and strength, but was thwarted by a combination of excellent defending and some refereeing decisions harshly going against him. Jeff Hendrick - Sheffield Wednesday 5 Making his debut he struggled with the pace at times, understandably after coming in from the cold. To his credit he chipped in with defensive duties, with a flurry of clearances and tackles. Kevin Long - Birmingham 7 The Irishman was solid at the back, as he has been all season. He won a number of aerial challenges against Watford target man Rajovic before the late sucker-punch. Scott Hogan - Birmingham 6 The striker’s work off the ball cannot be faulted, but he will be judged at the end of the season on goals and he wasted two golden chances to beat Bachmann. Mark McGuinness - Cardiff 9 Becoming one of the most consistent performers in this Cardiff side. Imperious in the air, cool on the ball and his positioning is improving week by week, seemingly. League 1 Eiran Cashin - Derby 6 A couple of loose passes drew some groans and had a tough fight on his hands against Colby Bishop which was engaging to watch as both players duked it out. James Collins - Derby 6 Drifted into wide positions as Derby desperately tried to find a way through and battled manfully. Scored the all-important penalty. Conor Shaughnessy - Portsmouth 7 Should have scored in the 64th minute when he shot wide after Robertson’s deflected shot fell kindly. Defensively again sound, restricting Derby to barely any chances until that unfortunate late penalty. Tyler Goodrham - Oxford 6.5 Had one snapshot during a bright cameo off the bench. Baba Adeeko - Wigan 8 Outstanding performance on his return from international duty, looks a fixture at this level already. CJ Hamilton - Blackpool 4 More was required of Hamilton in both defence and attack. League 2 (Don't usually do League 2 but I'll do Wrexham this season as they have a senior Irish international playing for them) James McClean - Wrexham 8 Showed his class with his ball in for Boyle’s goal, very good again. Tom O’Connor - Wrexham 7 Dictated how Wrexham played the game, good on the ball and worked hard off it. |

18/9/23 Premier League Josh Cullen - Burnley 7 Flashed a dangerous ball across the face of goal in the first-half and kept everything ticking over in the middle. 19/9/23 Champions League Liam Scales - Celtic 7 Acted as the more senior of the centre-backs and he did his job very well. Looked every bit like he could play for Celtic there in the future despite the signings of Lagerbielke and Nawrocki this summer. Championship Max O’Leary - Bristol City 7 It’s a shame there was one loose kick that very nearly led to a second goal for Plymouth as Ben Waine fired wide with the whole goal to aim at, because outside of that O’Leary distribution was impressive with some fine diagonal balls out to Cam Pring which caught the Pilgrims off-guard. His handling, as it has been for the most of the season, continues to be excellent. Jason Knight - Bristol City 8 Increasingly personifies this team and is building a brilliant understanding with not just Williams and James behind him, but Bell and Sykes ahead of him. His sweeping pass sent Sykes on his way for the killer third, and he was a constant menace for the Plymouth midfield. Wisely substituted on the hour after a busy three weeks so he’ll be at optimum level for Leicester on Saturday. Mark Sykes - Bristol City 8 Came off to a standing ovation and deserved all that praise, and probably a bit more. He was so incisive down the right, a constant outlet and his combination play with Knight is a joy to watch. Took his goal with real confidence, drilling into the far corner after being set up by his countryman. Tyreik Wright - Plymouth 4 Got the chance to play in a wide attacking role on the right for Argyle, with Morgan Whittaker one of several key players taken out of the starting line-up against the Robins, but did not make the most of the opportunity. He could not hit the target when a deep cross reached him from Callum Wright and was later substituted at half-time. Finn Azaz - Bristol City 5 Was Argyle's star player against Preston so it was surprising the midfielder was one of the seven changes made by Steven Schumacher for this match at Ashton Gate. He was the Pilgrims' fifth and final substitute in the 71st minute when taking over from Luke Cundle. Mark McGuinness - Cardiff 9 (Star Man) Didn't really put a foot wrong, a sentence I'm writing a lot about this man so far this season. Headed absolutely everything and good with his feet. He's found some form. Alan Browne - Preston 8 (Star Man) Things didn’t always go his way in the first half but he stepped up big time in the second and provided a glorious assist for Osmajic’s winning goal. Immense. Robbie Brady - Preston 6 Took him a bit of time to settle into the game but some solid defensive work towards the end. Kevin Long - Birmingham 6.5 Long should have screamed at Bielik to get out of the way so that he could clear before the Pole headed into his own net. Other than that miscommunication, Long defended well enough alongside Sanderson and was particularly dominant in the air. Sinclair Armstrong - QPR 6 Missed a glorious chance when, appearing to think he was offside, he collected Dozzell’s pass and scooped a shot woefully high and wide. Offered the usual pace, power and relentless up front though and will improve in front of goal. Gavin Bazunu – Southampton 6 Nothing he could do about Hutchinson’s goal. Great save to stop Chaplin’s half-volley and keep Saints in it after the break. Ryan Manning - Southampton 6 Lost possession a few times throughout the game with stray passes. Stung the keeper’s palms with a driving effort in the closing stages. Scapegoated but didn’t concede any real chances as a result of his defensive work. Will Smallbone - Southampton 5 Part of a unit that did not respond well at all to going behind. Tried his luck from a distance after moving into an advanced midfield role, but blocked behind. Jack Taylor - Ipswich 5 Looked a bit nervous but grew into the game. Put in a strong tackle on Joe Aribo to create a great chance for Conor Chaplin, but was overrun in midfield at times and could've been at fault for a goal. Hooked before the hour-mark for Massimo Luongo. A hard one for him to make his first start in. Marcus Harness - Ipswich 6 Didn't have enough time to do anything, but he slowed down the tempo in the final stages, as he's often done in other games this season. That seems to be his role in the Championship, and it works well. Jeff Hendrick - Sheffield Wednesday 5 Quietly tidy with most of what he did, though the fact is that he didn’t impact things as he’d have liked. Looks like a player still edging his way into match sharpness and came off on the hour. Darragh Lenihan - Middlesbrough 7 Leaders performance, providing a level of calm at the back and in playing it out of defence before coming up with the moment that at least earned Boro a point. League 1 Barry Cotter - Barnsley 6 Scored his second of the season. Had defensive issues in first half. Corey O'Keefe - Barnsley 7 Added something down the right. Joe Rafferty - Portsmouth 8 Back with the bit between his teeth. Fully re-energised and tore about the pitch with real purpose. Really important late on. Conor Shaughnessy - Portsmouth 7 Continues to grow with every display. Played at every opportunity, but also knew when to keep it simple. Broke up play well, but did have a wobble after the break. Peter Kioso - Peterborough 7.5 The new captain it seems. Showed a lot more willing to go forward in the second half as Posh began to hurt Cheltenham with their directness and scored a fantastic goal. 20/9/23 Championship Sam Szmodics - Blackburn 7 Leads the press and could've had a couple of goals if not for last-ditched blocks and saves from Patterson. Andrew Moran - Blackburn 8 Dropped into central areas to create an overload in midfield. Some lovely touches and looked bright on the ball. Should've had a first goal but somehow Ballard deflected is shot over the bar. Mark Travers - Stoke 7 A big bonus for Stoke to have a keeper who consistently makes routine saves and a couple of smart ones too. Luke McNally - Stoke 6 A little bit rusty in his defending at times amid a stop-start start to his season. Cyrus Christie - Hull 7 His first start of the season and in-keeping with the first half, spent much of it defending his box. Indeed, made a great block early in the second half. Was able to get forward more in the second. Aaron Connolly - Hull 6 Had a very brief sight of goal in the first half but cut a largely isolated figure. Involved in the sending off after being cleaned out by Rodon. Set-up Traore who hit the post. When he ran at the defence, he caused a threat. Jayson Molumby - West Brom 6 A little rash in the centre circle when booked for catching Louza in the first half. Was walking a bit of a tightrope after that. Continued to deliver the energy that Corberan depends on until he was taken off before the hour. Shane Duffy - Norwich 8 Another excellent performance from a man who's increasingly looking like a summer window master stroke from Stuart Webber. One fantastically timed tackle to dispossess Iheanacho in a dangerous situation for the hosts. Rightly booked for a foul on the same man in the 39th minute, but otherwise picked his timing well to hunt for possession. Lunged at just the right moment on a number of occasions. Dominated aerially and got the first contact on a series of crosses and set-pieces, but should have directed his header better when Onel Hernandez stood a cross up late on. Unlucky to be on the losing side. Adam Idah - Norwich 6 Started strongly, but that tailed off as City's hopes of taking a point did the same. Again, looked good when facing goal but struggled with his hold-up play and suffered with his loose control. 21/9/23 Europa League Caoimhin Kelleher - Liverpool 7 No chance with the opener but otherwise confident in dealing with high balls and decent distribution. Europa Conference League Jamie McGrath - Aberdeen 6 Didn't see as much of the ball as he would have liked but worked his socks off and helped give Aberdeen a solid defensive structure. Jonny Hayes - Aberdeen 6 His pace served as an outlet late on and he was able to run in behind and force a couple of corners. 22/9/23 Championship Kevin Long - Birmingham 7 The Irishman has been magnificent in the air throughout this season and dominated inside Blues’ box. Long also won an impressive four tackles in another solid showing. Scott Hogan - Birmingham 5.5 Despite scoring two in two games recently, the penalty miss against Millwall has clearly dented Hogan’s confidence. He missed a big chance at Watford and missed an even better one against QPR. Sinclair Armstrong - QPR 6 Gave former Rangers loanee Dion Sanderson plenty of problems with his pace and power. Guilty of taking the wrong option at times and lacks refinement but was always a threat when in open space. |

23/9/23 Premier League Matt Doherty - Wolves 6 Impressed at left wing back as he made sure his side weren’t overrun. Josh Cullen - Burnley 7 Crucial in building attacks from the back, always scanning and offering himself. Not quite as influential in the second half though. Scottish Premiership Liam Scales - Celtic 7 Another solid performance from the Irishman who continues to improve. Championship Marcus Harness - Ipswich 7 Same as always, did what he needed to do. Only took 15 touches but had three shots in the latter stages, two of which were blocked with one fizzing wide. Showing himself as a really good impact player. Delivered the cross that lead to the winning goal, too. Sam Szmodics - Blackburn 6 Struggled to really have much influence on the game in the first half but made the most of his chance in the second. A brilliant finish to bring Rovers level. Andrew Moran - Blackburn 5 Started brightly when he could come into central areas but struggled when he was pinned back as a defensive winger. Subbed at the break on a yellow. Max O’Leary - Bristol City 8 (Star Man) Produced a brilliant save to slaw out Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall’s close range header which looked destined to break the deadlock a few minutes before the penalty in what was another positive display by the City goalkeeper. Jason Knight - Bristol City 6 Had a great opportunity after Vardy’s penalty as the ball broke to him on the edge of the area but the Irishman went for pure power and it sailed over the crossbar. Outside of that he was his usual energetic and purposeful self but it was a game largely played around him. Mark Sykes - Bristol City 5 It just wasn’t his game today, unfortunately, as Leicester did exceptional at not only controlling possession but also squeezing space and eliminating any opportunity City had to counter and therefore get Sykes in the game. He did enjoy some space towards the end of the first half and sent in a couple of teasing crosses but it was tough for him to make an impact. Darragh Lenihan - Middlesbrough 8 Colossal for his side both defensively and mentally. After falling behind he was the man calming everyone down and getting Boro straight back on the front foot with his calm nature on the ball. Gavin Bazunu – Southampton 6 Nervy moment dropping the ball to Crooks’ feet but referee awarded a foul. Boro nearly scored directly from a corner as Irishman’s box presence lacked. Be frustrated to concede another long-range goal. Good save to deny Coburn Boro’s third. Will Smallbone – Southampton 6 Regularly involved. Sent Adams through one-on-one but the Scot missed. Created two chances in the first half, which was the most of any Saints player. Performance did not grow after break despite courage to take shots at goal. Ryan Manning – Southampton 5 Immediately involved heavily after coming on during the break but gave away possession in dangerous areas. Boro chances were free flow in the closing stages. Finn Azaz - Plymouth 8 Had it not been for Morgan Whittaker completing a hat-trick, Azaz would have been the Argyle Star Man. He was outstanding, involved in nearly all of their best attacking play from the 'number 10' role which he excelled in during his season-long loan to the Pilgrims last term. Shane Duffy - Norwich 3 Found himself in the eye of Argyle's first half storm on three of the four occasions. Whittaker guided his shot through the Irishman's legs for the opener. Then, given his size, should never be levered off the ball in the manner Ryan Hardie did to feed Whittaker infield, who did the rest. But the fourth concession was embarrassing. Backed into his own penalty box by the dangerous Azaz, and then got his body shape and balance all wrong as he was tied in knots before the Aston Villa loanee slotted past Angus Gunn. Adam Idah - Norwich 6 (Star Man) Big chance for an extended run in the side given the injury absences for Josh Sargent and Ashley Barnes. Struggled with the rest of his team mates in that opening period. Although lovely slip pass to Sara did end with the Brazilian's strike beaten away by Hazard. Arguably biggest contribution prior to the interval was a clearing header deep inside his own box from Azaz free kick. But struck twice with the game up. That, after he had tested Hazard with a close range volley on the stretch from Sara. Made no mistake when the midfielder found him again to guide a shot across his body from 18 yards. Emphatic power penalty, even though the Argyle keeper guessed correctly. Robbie Brady - Preston 6 Intense on his first start. Guilty of trying the killer pass and some loose play at times, but the assist for Lindsay had quality in it. Alan Browne - Preston 6 Good energy once again and made sure he was competitive in every duel. Glanced a first half header just wide. Jeff Hendrick - Sheffield Wednesday 3 Carded having got the wrong side of things late on in the first half. Passive and unable to muster much. Jayson Molumby - West Brom 6 Another player who was coming up against his former club. Molumby did what Molumby so often does, the engine to complement Mowatt's more refined style of play. League 1 CJ Hamilton - Blackpool 8 CJ Hamilton was fantastic for the Seasiders. The wing-back won the penalty in the first half and provided a number of dangerous chances. Peter Kioso - Peterborough 6.5 The captain was always an outlet on the right and he found some fine positions without finding too many good crosses. Took a caution after chatting to the referee (presumably in his role as skipper) which now means a one-match ban. Baba Adeeko - Wigan 5.5 Found it very tough going for perhaps the first time this season, as he and Smith were overrun throughout. Eiran Cashin - Derby 7.5 Had a sound game alongside Nelson in the heart of the defence. Couple of passes let him down, but his defending was largely solid and won countless headers when defending set-pieces. Has formed a good partnership with Nelson. James Collins - Derby 8 (Star Man) Worked incredibly hard across the front line as you would expect and his goal demonstrated terrific technique as it was not an easy finish to meet a bouncing ball. Ice cool for the penalty and could have had a hat-trick. Joe Rafferty - Portsmouth 7 Always an important outlet for Pompey down the right and developing a decent understanding with Lane. Put some questioning balls into the box in the first-half especially, while such a reliable figure defensively. Conor Shaughnessy - Portsmouth 7 Such a dominant figure in the air and largely faultless display from the big centre-half who is proving an inspired capture. Some big headers late on and another impressive showing. League 2 James McClean - Wrexham 3 The Irish international was brilliant against Grimsby but struggled to make an impact at Edgeley Park. Tom O'Connor - Wrexham 3 Wrexham started brightly enough but lost the midfield battles after that. 24/9/23 Premier League Evan Ferguson - Brighton 5 Disappointing display from the 18-year-old. Didn't really get into the match and his hold-up play was not the best. Replaced by Fati at the break. John Egan - Sheffield United 3 Back in the side after injury but United were a defensive shambles in the first half, conceding three and being fortunate to not be further behind. Egan was culpable for one poor pass that almost led to a Newcastle goal and Wilson enjoyed real joy running in behind. Wilson was left in acres of space to head Newcastle 4-0 ahead and things continued to go downhill from there. Scottish Premiership Jamie McGrath - Aberdeen 7 The Irishman was lively and bagged his first goal for the club after getting on the end of a free-flowing move. Jonny Hayes - Aberdeen 6 Replaced McGarry early on and put in a shift in the left-wing back role before he too had be be substituted with a reported dead leg. Championship Mark Travers - Stoke 6 Let down by his defence again but was relieved when Connolly’s bouncing header was cleared off line by Johnson. A couple of smart saves. Luke McNally - Stoke 3 Not having the influence needed nor showing strengths which earned his reputation at Coventry. Didn’t know whether to come or go. Cyrus Christie - Hull 8 Back to his best first half, headed away three early balls into his box. At the other end, picked out Philogene's run for the opening goal. Good on the day. Aaron Connolly - Hull 8 Always involved and got his goal with a scuffed finish, set up the second and nearly had a third with a header cleared off the line by Johnson. Came close second half at the near post. A menace throughout. Sean McLoughlin - Hull 6 One important block at his near post as the hosts tried to get a second. Mark McGuinness - Cardiff 8 (Star Man) Put his body on the line at times as Sunderland pushed. Took his goal well. A beast in the air all day. |

One late addition... 23/9/23 Premier League Chiedozie Ogbene - Luton 8.5 (Star Man) Full Premier League debut for the Irish international and what a debut it was. Set his stall out early on to run at his opponents and did just that for the rest of the game, causing endless panic to the Wolves' back-line. Huge reason behind the Hatters’ best 90-minute showing so far, almost taking advantage of a dodgy backpass, while getting plenty of crosses into the box too. If he keeps this up, will no doubt become a firm crowd favourite. |
