14/1/23

Premier League

Evan Ferguson (Brighton) 8

Had a good battle with centre-back Ibrahima Konate and while he lost some battles, and had some victories too, he kept plugging away and got an assist for March's second goal. There's so much to like about his all-round attributes, especially for an 18-year-old.

Seamus Coleman (Everton) 7

Everton’s captain rolled back the years in the first half with an energetic attack-minded display and although he was pinned back more after the break, he continued to lead by example before making way for Gordon.

Gavin Bazunu (Southampton) 7

Held onto the early sighters put towards him by Everton and was let down by his teammates for the opener as they allowed Onana to get a free header on the ball. Stayed composed throughout and claimed several crosses that could easily have troubled him earlier in the season.

Nathan Collins (Wolves) 7

Collins was a tad lax in possession on a few occasions and needed to be bailed out by Kilman after being done by Antonio early in the second half. But the Irishman was generally quite solid at the back and dominated Wolves’ penalty area.

Championship

Max O'Leary (Bristol City) 6

Tipped a decent effort by Jordan Graham past the post early on. Had little chance with Deeney's penalty and likewise with Khadra's goal. Made a good save against the latter when he made a risky decision to come so far off his line.

Mark Sykes (Bristol City) 8

Keen to show what he can do in his favoured position on the right of the attack. Started the game really brightly with darting runs forward and grabbed his first goal in City colours with a tap in following Pring's work in the area. Added his second with a similar goal after Semenyo's excellent run. Dispossessed too easily for Birmingham's second.

Kevin Long (Birmingham City) 4

Not the start he wanted. Booked for an early body check then caught, arguably fouled, by Wells for the second goal. Overall though he looked like a 32-year-old who hadn't played for eight months, especially when one-on-one with Semenyo.

Scott Hogan (Birmingham City) 5

One good piece of hold-up play, which sent Bacuna down the right, was the highlight of an otherwise quiet first 45. As the game opened up in the second half he made a couple of good runs but it was almost as if Blues have forgotten how to harness his movement.

Josh Cullen (Burnley) 6

Burnley were overpowered in the middle in the first half Cullen grew into the game in second period.

Callum O'Dowda (Cardiff) 6 - Star Man

Tried his utmost to get forward from left back but struggled to really penetrate that left-hand side. Much better after the break and tried to take things by the scruff of the neck. He was on hand to smash home late on and it was a well-taken goal.

Callum Robinson (Cardiff) 6

Played two really incisive passes in behind the defence. Needs to start next time out.

Sean McLoughlin (Hull) 5

A couple of nice pings across the park early on, sacrificed just before the hour as Rosenior looked to go more front-foot.

Cyrus Christie (Hull) 5

Like the rest, non-existent in the first period. Was able to impact more in the second half going forward, but still not as effective as we've seen.

Aaron Connolly (Hull) 5

Not sure he touched the ball in the first 10 minutes on the field.

Dara O'Shea (West Brom) 8

Excellent, defence splitting pass for Dike who duly did the rest to get Albion back in the game. O'Shea was generally very good here, making some crucial interceptions, especially towards the end when Albion came under pressure. Captain's knock.

Jayson Molumby (West Brom) 8

He can either stand out and be among Albion's key men (see the entire festive period) or you can sometimes forget he is on the pitch (see Sunderland) but whatever his level of performance, Molumby's attitude is never in question. Brilliant energy and a fine time to slam home his first goal of the season.

Alan Browne (Preston) 4

His role on the day was confusing and the captain couldn't get North End going.

Tom Cannon (Preston) 5

A tough result to take on debut. Settled into the game after 10 minutes and had a couple of chances over the piece. Kept working away, but to little avail. Unlucky with his chance that hit the crossbar. Should get better with more minutes.

Troy Parrott (Preston) 5

A boost to have him back available. Game was gone by the time he entered the pitch though.

Robbie Brady (Preston) 5

Another good player to have back. More minutes off the bench but at a dreadful stage of the game.

Jeff Hendrick (Reading) 8

Tripled his tally for the season with two strikes in the first half. Took his first goal superbly, drilling the ball home low from 25 yards while he showed great awareness for the second to tap in from close range. Capped an impressive-all round performance full of tenacity and energy.

Shane Long (Reading) 7

Made an early entry into the game, replacing Hutchinson after just 14 minutes. Ran his socks off as ever and almost scored with a toe poke in the first half. Had a decent penalty shout early in the second half before being replaced by Joao.

Jimmy Dunne (QPR) 6

Had a real tussle with Andy Carroll and relished the physical battle with the former England striker. Made a couple of important headed clearances from two late Reading corners.

John Egan (Sheffield United) 6

Positioning was good and came to United's rescue on a couple of occasions by being in the right place at the right time to clear the danger.

Jack Bonham (Stoke) 4

Will think he could have done better with first goal and will have nightmares about the second.

Ryan Manning (Swansea) 8

The Irishman was a tackling machine and put in so many dangerous crosses from the left flank. Did so well to stretch and claim an assist for Joel Piroe and then put in a brilliant cross for Liam Cullen's fortunate goal. Top shift once again.

CJ Hamilton (Blackpool) 7

Dropped back well to help out Husband on left flank when Blackpool defended. As decent an attacking contribution as any Blackpool player out there at Vicarage Road.

Andy Lyons (Blackpool) 5

Replaced Connolly in the closing stages.

League 1

Sean Raggett (Portsmouth) 4

Nowhere near last season’s form and played Charles onside for Bolton’s opener. How Blues desperately need him back to his best to turn this around.

Ronan Curtis (Portsmouth) 5

Disappointingly made very little impact but he was in familiar company in awful team display.

Eiran Cashin (Derby) 7

Played an integral role in the first goal as a glorious crossfield pass picked out Nathaniel Mendez-Laing which was a tactic Derby used a lot in the first half. Defended well too but had to come off.

Conor Hourihane (Derby) 7

The 4-3-3 formation has allowed the Irishman to get into the box more and here he conjured up a header to get Derby back on level terms.

Jason Knight (Derby) 8

Was like a ferret in a Yorkshireman's trousers. Biting, nipping and full of running and you'd love to see his stats from a game in which he just never stopped. He epitomised a high-octane Derby performance.

James Collins (Derby) 6.5

Had a shot from distance which cleared the upright, but brings so much to the team in terms of his work ethic. Contributed at the back too and that often gets forgotten.

David McGoldrick (Derby) 5.5

Should have scored after Cheltenham scored their second.

Marcus Harness (Ipswich) 7

The attacker’s most memorable moment from this game saw him hit the bar after being found in space by an excellent Davis cross. Harness had some good moments in this game and some not so good ones, but was a threat as he looked to turn his man and connected with team-mates well.

Paudie O’Connor (Lincoln) 7

A brick wall at the back, a defensively sound performance from O’Connor.

Danny Mandroiu (Lincoln) 5

Made a couple of poor decisions and struggled to make his mark on the contest.

Olamide Shodipo (Lincoln) 5

Had a couple of good touches on debut.

Feels like deja vu reading the snippet about Connolly's performance.

Think Christie and McLoughlins 5 ratings and summary is far more reflective of their team performance as a whole today, like what can a striker do to effect a game where neither he or his team have the ball?

14/1/23

Championship

Andrew Omobamidele (Norwich) 6

Back where it all started after his emergency debut in the club’s second Championship title winning campaign under Daniel Farke. Snapped into an early challenge on Ben Woodburn.

Good positioning at his near post to deal with an inswinging corner. Let Delap escape a minute after the interval but Krul came to the rescue.

Louie Watson (Luton) 6.5

Given the final 10 minutes as boss Edwards made a late change and looked to get on the ball as much as possible, always finding a team-mate with his passing, but Town couldn't create a clear-cut opportunity.

James McClean (Wigan) 6

Another tireless display working overtime up and down the left.

Will Keane (Wigan) 7

Had a couple near misses before popping up with his customary goal.

League 1

Tyreik Wright (Plymouth) 6

Made his debut for Argyle as a 59th minute substitute for Danny Mayor but as the game really started to open up it was difficult for him to fully get up to the speed of it.

Warren O'Hora (MK Dons) 6

Looked solid as usual but suffered a first-half injury that forced him off.

Dawson Devoy (MK Dons) 6

Got into a couple of promising positions, but seemed shot-shy when the opportunity arose for him, looking for a pass rather than chancing his arm.

Jordan Shipley (Shrewsbury) 7

The pacey Bobby Kamwa got the better of him on a couple of occasions in the opening 45 minutes, but the wing-back coped better after the break.

Killian Phillips (Shrewsbury) 7

It was an energetic performance from the midfielder, he got on the end of a few crosses and looks a presence in the box.

Scottish Premiership

Aiden McGeady (Hibs) 5

Tried to make things happen but often put a little too much mustard on his final ball.

Jake Doyle-Hayes (Hibs) 7

Hibs improved in the middle after he came off the bench.

15/1/23

Premier League

Matt Doherty (Tottenham) 5

A quiet game going forward but he defended well enough at the other end.

Scottish League Cup

Liam Scales (Aberdeen) 7

Coped very well with Rangers attack and was doing his best to keep the Dons in the game when Rangers started their comeback.

Jonny Hayes (Aberdeen) 6

Had a curling effort saved by Alan McGregor as he tried to find a way to get Aberdeen level but drifted as the game fell away from Aberdeen.

16/1/23

League 1

Jack Taylor (Peterborough) 7.5

Played slightly deeper than expected but turned the ball over so many times for Posh. Also drove forward with the ball well and played some strong passes to get Posh going forward.

Re last entry, I only saw the first half of the Port Vale v Peterborough game on Sky last night but Jack Taylor was the best player during that time in what was a scrappy game on a very poor pitch. Mipo Odubeko played the full game for Port Vale, no rating here, he looked very frustrated in the first half, not getting any service up front and virtually no attempts to utilise his pace.

17/1/23

FA Cup

Kevin Long (Birmingham) 7

No-one played particularly well in the first half, Long didn't do too badly, certainly better than on Saturday. Defended reasonably well against League One opposition and was in the right spot to claim an unlikely goal.

Scott Hogan (Birmingham) 5.5

Another who just didn't seem that engaged. Totally peripheral in the opening 45. Had a chance at the start of the second and looked generally brighter after the reshuffle.

Ryan Manning (Swansea) 7

Put in some brilliant deliveries from the left and gave Swansea more of a threat.

Max O'Leary (Bristol City) 7

Called into action twice in the first half. The first to comfortably deny Ntcham before springing to his left to deny Vyner's sliced clearance. A smart save to stop Latibeaudiere from distance. Had no chance with the Swansea equaliser. Brilliant goalkeeping in the 120th minute to come out to claim a cross.

Mark Sykes (Bristol City) 7

Struggled to get forward in the first half with most of City's attacks coming down the left side. Made a couple of important tackles inside his own area. Grabbed his third in two games with a great run into the box before smartly finishing beyond Andy Fisher. Never stopped running throughout.

Louie Watson (Luton) 7.5

Big night for the youngster as he was given the responsibility of the holding role, always wanting the ball and happy to receive it in tight areas, more often than not spinning out of trouble to get Luton going with some neat passing. Got stuck in as well, as there were no cramp issues this time, only taken off when Luton had got their noses in front at the death.

James McClean (Wigan) 6

Produced a superb goalline clearance to keep the scores level shortly after coming on.

Will Keane (Wigan) 6

Had a couple of half-chances that were quickly snuffed out.

Nathan Collins (Wolves) 6

There were a few moments when Collins and his defensive colleagues were fortunate in the first half, but they improved after the break. Collins looked to get Wolves moving forward with quick distribution from the back.

Joe Hodge (Wolves) 5.5

Wolves lost the midfield battle in the first half and Hodge paid the price at half-time. The 20-year-old wasn’t able to disrupt Liverpool’s flow during a chastening 45 minutes.

Caoimhin Kelleher (Liverpool) 7

Rarely had a save to make but confident with the ball at his feet.

18/1/23

FA Cup

Joel Bagan (Cardiff) 2

Had a nightmare. Every pass he hit seemed to go awry, he slipped at crucial moments and attackers glided past him.

Scottish Premiership

Liam Scales (Aberdeen) 4

Not a good night for the Irish defender. Handled inside the area to allow Shankland to add a third from the penalty spot, and in general struggled to cope with crosses and balls into the area.

Jonny Hayes (Aberdeen) 5

Veteran Hayes has proved to be a useful player off the bench in recent matches, but failed to do anything meaningful in a rare start in what was a shocking night all round. Replaced by Besuijen less than 10 minutes into the second half.

20/1/23

Championship

John Egan (Sheffield United) 7

Up against one of the division's most prolific strikers in Oscar Estupinan, who already has 12 goals to his name - a third of Hull's tally so far, but Egan handled him well and the Hull forward got little change out of the Republic of Ireland international. A great interception 10 minutes from time kept the visitors at bay.

Sean McLoughlin (Hull) 5

Never looked comfortable with the pace and skill of Sheffield’s attacking line.

Cyrus Christie (Hull) 6

Steady away down the right. Moved deeper in the second half and looked slightly more comfortable.

Aaron Connolly (Hull) 7 - Star Man

Arguably City’s brightest at Bramall Lane. He looked bright on the ball and looked to make things happen.

Josh Cullen (Burnley) 7

West Brom caused issues in first quarter but the midfielder's calming influence helped Burnley gain control.

Dara O'Shea (West Brom) 7

There were some nervy moments for O'Shea, when attempted passes out from the back saw him run into trouble, but generally he and Pieters did their jobs as well as they could - for a large part of the second half Burnley resorted to long balls and that suited O'Shea down to the ground.

Jayson Molumby (West Brom) 7

His all-action persona and selfless hard work is much admired by supporters. Won crunching tackles, often starting Albion attacks. Won important headers in his own box, too, and might've scored Albion's second when forcing a low save out of Muric.

21/1/23

Premier League

Evan Ferguson (Brighton) 9 - Star Man

Tasked with getting Brighton back in the game... AND THAT HE DID. The lad is class. Estupinan floated an inviting ball into the box and Ferguson, the only Albion shirt in there up against five Leicester shirts, directed a pin point header past Ward, on to the far post and in. Proper striker!

Gavin Bazunu (Southampton) 5

Rushed out to meet Jacob Ramsey in the first five minutes and managed to clear both the ball and the player. Looked nervous with some of his actions and played some wayward passes that put Saints under unnecessary pressure on several occasions.

Seamus Coleman (Everton) 6

Much more withdrawn than the first half against Southampton, the captain was disciplined in keeping tabs on West Ham’s creative talents even if other team-mates weren’t but made way at half-time as the visitors chased a two-goal deficit.

Championship

Kevin Long (Birmingham) 5

Poor at Bristol City, picked up at Forest Green but once again struggled against Championship opposition. A weak header contributed to the Ledson goal, he looked slow on the turn and is still some way short of match sharpness. Subbed on 62 minutes.

Scott Hogan (Birmingham) 5.5

Had one half chance in the first 45 but got under Colin's cross and directed it over. Should have gone with a first time shot from Deeney's header down.

Alan Browne (Preston) 8

Started brightly and never really looked back. Was positive in his play and took his goal really well. Carried out his defensive duties all game - further evidence he is more than capable at right wing-back.

Robbie Brady (Preston) 8.5 - Star Man

Back in the starting lineup and justified his selection. His crosses led to both goals and he showed his experience throughout. Made the right decisions, worked his socks off and put in some crucial tackles at the back.

Tom Cannon (Preston) 7

Occupied centre-backs and was always on the move. Battles away up there and gives you everything he's got. His header back across goal led to the opener. Encouraging display.

Troy Parrott (Preston) 6

Put himself about, pressing defenders and making runs into the channels.

Max O'Leary (Bristol City) 6

Wasn't tested in the first half with Blackburn barely creating anything going forward. Had no chance with Dack's opener from close range. Safe hands from crosses but kicking wayward on occasions.

Mark Sykes (Bristol City) 5

Didn't have much of an impact in the first half and looked a little off-sync with George Tanner down the right. Looked leggy from Tuesday's FA Cup game and was taken off just after the hour mark.

Mark McGuinness (Cardiff) 7 - Star Man

A welcome return for the centre-back. Brought everything you'd want including aerial presence and a cool assuredness. Slid in to deny George Honeyman a certain goal, putting it over his own crossbar.

Callum O'Dowda (Cardiff) 6

Bombed up and down that left-hand side and really wanted to get forward. Put in a couple of decent crosses and never gave up.

Callum Robinson (Cardiff) 6

Always gets into good areas but made so many errors when in important positions. Better after the break, smashed one shot from 20 yards just wide of the post.

Jimmy Dunne (QPR) 7

Played well at the heart of defence, winning plenty of headers and used the ball efficiently. Made some important challenges as Swansea pressed for an unlikely winner late in the game.

Ryan Manning (Swansea) 7

Put in some good deliveries from corners and linked up well with Ollie Cooper on the left. Had a tough battle with former Swan Ethan Laird who was withdrawn due to injury, but, to his credit, the Irishman chipped in with a number of tackles and interceptions.

Jack Bonham (Stoke) 7

A welcome clean sheet for a pretty quiet afternoon’s work when he did the basics.

Will Smallbone (Stoke) 8

A much-needed finishing touch with well-taken goal. Had another shot deflected over and made a couple of useful passes.

Jeff Hendrick (Reading) 4

Kept things going in the midfield and did his best to affect things in the final third but got very little reward.

Shane Long (Reading) 4.5

Glanced a header narrowly wide after a free-kick in from the right.

League 1

Conor Hourihane (Derby) 8

The midfielder continues to reap the benefit of the tactical switch in midfield with a sublime finish on the half-volley. So deadly in those positions.

Jason Knight (Derby) 7.5

Was always on the move and set the tone for a high-octane performance. Whether it was tackling in midfield, or popping up with crosses from the wing, he was everywhere. Wears you out watching him.

David McGoldrick (Derby) 7

Was given the task of pressing Bolton's defence whenever they tried to play out from the back and certainly got some joy. Blessed with a wonderful touch.

Tony Springett (Derby) 6

Showed what we can expect as he chased Bolton down at every opportunity.

James Collins (Derby) 6

Came on to unsettle the Bolton backline.

Dawson Devoy (MK Dons) 6.5

Put himself about but on a difficult pitch, was hard for him to get much joy on the ball.

Conor Grant (MK Dons) 6

With Dons playing with their backs to the wall, did a decent job trying to clear the lines.

Marcus Harness (Ipswich) 5

Harness produced some good moments of quality during a first-half performance in which his team lacked their usual rhythm. Had a shot fly over and delivered the cross from which Davis was able to head home. Was replaced in the second half.

Tyreik Wright (Plymouth) 6

Will take him a little while to adjust to League One after playing for Bradford City in League Two for the first half of the season but he showed glimpses of considerable promise.

Finn Azaz (Plymouth) 7

Came up with two assists in just his second game, and first start, since late October after suffering a broken ankle in the home game against Shrewsbury Town. Will only get better the more he plays.

Sean Raggett (Portsmouth) 7

Given a new central-defensive partner and the pair looked solid. Did okay covering for Swanson on the right flank in first half but, whenever challenged centrally, was so comfortable.

Ronan Curtis (Portsmouth) 7

Very lively upon introduction and Joe Morrell should really have finished off his pass to score at one point. Would have impressed the new head coach.

Thanks again for this.

Ferguson is sure to start but Brady left wing back might ensure some nice deliveries into him so good to see Brady supplying for his club.

Midfield and Ferguson's partner are less clear at present. Obafemi and Parrott have time to play themselves into contention (assuming Obafemi gets a move). Cullen, Molumby, Knight are surely the midfield combo and Hodge and Hendrick are unlikely to shift one of the two former names. Knight hasn't got many goal involvements for Derby (1G and 2A in 20) which is disappointing at that level. What of a Finn Azaz Championship transfer in the next week and a few games there earning him a shout? Unlikely I suppose. I still feel for all his hustle and bustle and good play that Knight needs to be threatening more for goals, otherwise the pressure falls entirely on a front two.

21/1/23

Championship

James McClean (Wigan) 6

Got up and down the left with his usual gusto, provided some decent deliveries into good areas.

Will Keane (Wigan) 5

One of Latics' top scorer's least effective games, nothing seemed to stick and touch let him down more than once.

Louie Watson (Luton) 7.5

Different kind of contest for the youngster this week, but will be one that is crucial to his development for the Hatters. On a bobbly surface, he still tried to play his own game despite being closed down quickly, as he had to dig in and do the dirty work up against some physical opponents when Wigan had their spell of pressure. Off for Campbell just after Town moved 2-0 in front, but his start shows Edwards has real faith in him.

League 1

Jordan Shipley (Shrewsbury) 8

Scored with a wonderful curling effort at the end of the first half. Offers such a threat going forward and could have had a few more. Great afternoon.

Killian Phillips (Shrewsbury) 7

A quieter afternoon for Phillips, who has enjoyed a very positive start to life as a Shrewsbury player.

22/1/23

Premier League

Nathan Collins (Wolves) 6

The scoreline would have been much worse had it not been for Collins. He made two vital clearances from underneath his own crossbar in the first half and was the pick of the Wolves defence.

Championship

Darragh Lenihan (Middlesbrough) 5

Difficult game to return from injury for. Carrick highlighted the threat of Amad Diallo beforehand and Lenihan struggled to cope with his pace and running in behind.

Scottish Cup

Aiden McGeady (Hibs) 8

Always looked threatening, had the beating of James Hill and delivered the ball into dangerous areas. Faded a little as the game went on.

24/1/22

League Cup

Gavin Bazunu (Southampton) 6

Off his line sharply to punch clear a dangerous Kieran Trippier cross into the box on 16 minutes. Couldn't do too much about Joelinton's goal thanks to Isak's excellent cross. Allowed Isak to get round him late on before the striker hit the side netting.

League 1

Richard Keogh (Ipswich) 7

Into the side for just his third league start for the club, alongside George Edmundson, and was solid throughout. He was good on the ball, walking it out and beginning attacks and did what was needed to keep Cole Stockton quiet throughout, as he did in the away game.

Marcus Harness (Ipswich) 6

Some neat touches from the attacker as he stepped off the bench and tried to create for his side.

Dawson Devoy (MK Dons) 6.5

Was given a bit more attacking freedom and got into some good positions in the first-half especially.

Jason Knight (Derby) 6

Couldn't fault his energy, but Vale made life difficult for Derby in the middle of the pitch and he couldn't quite influence the game as he would have liked.

Conor Hourihane (Derby) 6

Created a terrific chance for David McGoldrick after a delightful touch and the striker should have scored his first goal away from Pride Park this season. Was subbed in the second half.

David McGoldrick (Derby) 7

Should have scored when he was picked out by Hourihane but made amends with the equaliser which he gleefully stuck away to score his first goal away from home this season.

James Collins (Derby) 6

Plugged away up front.

Tony Springett (Derby) 5.5

Came on at left-back and had one or two neat touches.

28/1/23

FA Cup

Kevin Long (Birmingham) 5.5

Not especially convincing but he just about kept up his end of the bargain. Subbed when Blues went to a back four. Another display that didn't inspire confidence.

Max O'Leary (Bristol City) 8

Made a really good save with his feet to deny Dike just moments after City had doubled their lead. Excellent from crosses and commanding his area. A brilliant double save in the second half denied Thomas-Asante initially before clawing out an effort from the resulting corner.

Mark Sykes (Bristol City) 8

Had some joy down the right and linked up with Tanner really well at times. Played a brilliant cross that allowed Scott to grab City's second and could have assisted Wells before that. Quieter in the second half but still posed a threat and could have had a goal for himself but dragged his strike wide.

Dara O'Shea (West Brom) 6

Had a mixed game, dealing well under pressure but was unable to block City's counter-attack on a separate occasion.

Jayson Molumby (West Brom) 6

Lost the ball in midfield which led to Bristol's counter-attack, and would have been disappointed with the manner Albion conceded the second goal.

Marcus Harness (Ipswich) 7

Worked hard to pressure Burnley throughout his time on the pitch and had a good early effort bounce clear off the top of the bar. Had another big opening before the break when he picked up a loose ball and drove towards goal. He went alone and was crowded out, with runners either side.

Josh Cullen (Burnley) 7

Instilled more solidity and rhythm into the midfield.

Andy Lyons (Blackpool) 7

Caused issues at times for Saints when he got forward down right flank. Struggled at times defensively against the likes of Perraud, but looked good going forward when given the chance.

CJ Hamilton (Blackpool) 6

Pace helped when going forward, but question marks defensively and gave away free kick which led to opening goal. Had to be careful for much of game with yellow card hanging over him.

Alan Browne (Preston) 6

Lacked that one-v-one quality to hurt Spurs going forward, but loads of endeavour from the skipper at right wing-back. Started positively and tried to get North End going, even if that final pass or cross eluded him.

Robbie Brady (Preston) 6

Committed and organised with his defensive duties. Wanted to see more consistent quality with his crosses, but they were pretty hit and miss. Kept working away down the left before being replaced 12 minutes from time.

Tom Cannon (Preston) 6

Buzzed around and ran himself into the ground chasing lost causes. Didn't see much of the ball and put himself about and defenders under pressure. Had a chance to slip Evans in first-half but went solo.

Matt Doherty (Tottenham) 5

Didn't see much of the ball throughout his display but didn't do much with it when he did get it.

Championship

Luke McNally (Coventry) 7

Handed his debut in place of the ill Michael Rose and kept things simple early on with plenty of short and safe passes but showed his pace and strength in beating Duane Holmes over 20 yards and holding him off. Got his head on the end of a corner in Huddersfield’s box and took a no-nonsense approach to defending overall on a solid debut. Never put a foot wrong.

Sean McLoughlin (Hull) 7

Quiet opening as City dominated, but made two really important headed clearances as QPR bared their teeth for the first time.

Cyrus Christie (Hull) 7

Started brilliantly down the right, his terrific work set up Connolly's opening goal but could have done better with a couple of promising deliveries. Another good display from Mr Consistent.

Aaron Connolly (Hull) 9 - Star Man

On his birthday he got off to the perfect start with a goal after 10 minutes, a really confident finish. Could have scored just before that, too. Brilliant second goal, and a deserved standing ovation.

Jimmy Dunne (QPR) 5

Made some important blocks but it was a day to forget for the big Irishman on a terrible afternoon for the QPR defence.

Sinclair Armstrong (QPR) 6

One of the few Rangers players who can emerge with any credit. Came on at half-time and his pace and power caused Hull some problems as the visitors pushed for an equaliser.

Darragh Lenihan (Middlesbrough) 8

A solid performance at the back from the Irish international. He read the game well and made some important blocks, interceptions and headers.

League 1

Paudie O’Connor (Lincoln) 6

Did well in dealing with balls over the top, and was consistent in his defending.

Sean Roughan (Lincoln) 5

Solid enough defensively but was poor from set-pieces. Multiple deliveries were wasted by the young full-back, preventing Lincoln from building up a spell of pressure.

Danny Mandroiu (Lincoln) 5

Poor game from Mandroiu. Nothing worked for the Irishman and he made a few uncharacteristic mistakes in possession.

Olamide Shodipo (Lincoln) 6

Had a few bright moments in the first half but faded away in the second 45. Looked tidy with the ball at his feet.

Jack Taylor (Peterborough) 9

An outstanding personal performance. He won tackles and headers and passed the ball impressively. Some of his driving runs forward were a sight to behold. Should have scored with a close range header, but a minor quibble on the day.

Sean Raggett (Portsmouth) 7

The pick of the defence, although perhaps asked to do too much on the ball. Regardless, strong and dominating as ever, especially during tough second half at times.

Scottish Premiership

Aiden McGeady (Hibs) 7

Didn’t have as big an impact as some of his team-mates but a decent outing nonetheless.

Liam Scales (Aberdeen) 2

Another lacklustre showing from the Celtic loanee, who initially had a positive start to his Aberdeen career. Sent off and gave away the penalty for Hibs' fifth.

Jonny Hayes (Aberdeen) 2

Hayes will always do a job where and when required but he was woefully out of his depth at left back in Leith. Subbed.

29/1/23

FA Cup

Evan Ferguson (Brighton) 8

The impressive 18-year-old had an early chance cleared off the line by TAA and perhaps should have scored. A strong physical battle with Konaté. Provides a focal point that's been missed since Glenn Murray. Forced off after a nasty challenge from Fabinho.

Jack Bonham (Stoke) 6

Claimed set-pieces well. Not always the most confident with distribution. Point-blank save to stop Sweeney late on.

Will Smallbone (Stoke) 7

Some good reading of the game and athleticism to go with it as he nicked the ball in the final third. Should probably have scored from Campbell cut back. Growing more into the season.

Anthony Forde (Wrexham) 7

Played his part in what was an outstanding cup tie.

Tom O'Connor (Wrexham) 8

Pushed Paul Mullin close for the man of the match award, scoring a goal and playing his part in defence.

John Egan (Sheffield United) 6

Many home fans were baying for a red when he upended Mullin as he looked to race through on Davies' goal but a covering defender probably saved the Irishman's skin. Then popped up with the equaliser at the other end with a great finish to force a replay.

30/1/23

FA Cup

Conor Hourihane (Derby) 6

Clipped a lovely ball down the line early on for Barkhuizen, but had a moment when he gifted possession to Antonio. Had a long-range shot that flashed wide.

Jason Knight (Derby) 6

The energy was there, but West Ham showed the difference between the top flight and League One in that they never made an error when under pressure.

James Collins (Derby) 6

Came up against Premier League centre-backs and found them difficult to unsettle despite his best attempts. Put his bundle in, but West Ham kept him under wraps.

Eiran Cashin (Derby) 5.5

Won a couple of headers and made a vital clearance. It's great to see him back.

Tony Springett (Derby) 5

Tried to get involved but West Ham saw the game out comfortably.

31/1/23

League Cup

Gavin Bazunu (Southampton) 5

Let down by some poor defending for Longstaff's goals. A couple of nervy moments when exchanging passes with the defence and resulted to playing long balls. Made a terrific save from a volley from outside the box.

FA Cup

Kevin Long (Birmingham) 6

Slightly better from the Irishman although he was treading water as Jack Vale flew past him early in the second half. Should have done better than a weak volley after Trusty's flick.

Scott Hogan (Birmingham) 5

His partnership with Khadra did not look a natural fit. This was a fitful display from Hogan, although there were some bright moments on the press.

Sammie Szmodics (Blackburn) 6

Brought on late for Dack, and made the difference going forward as his cross led to the own goal.

Scottish Premiership

Aiden McGeady (Hibs) 5

Always available in wide areas. Kept the defenders on their toes without cutting them open, but delivery not up to scratch and fluffed a chance.

Championship

Mark McGuinness (Cardiff) 7 - Star Man

Pick of the bunch. Was everywhere when the danger started to come City's way. Headed countless balls away from the box and stood up to the physical challenge.

Callum Robinson (Cardiff) 5

Was a willing runner and looked spritely early on, but he didn't manage to get in the game much after that. Set up Wintle with that good cross into the box.

1/2/23

Scottish Premiership

Jonny Hayes (Aberdeen) 6

With the early red card to teammate McCrorie, the veteran was not able to go and support the attack as much as he would have liked, and was almost caught out a couple of times defensively.

3/2/23

Championship

Dara O'Shea (West Brom) 8

Excellent performance, particularly when you consider he was up against one of the most renowned attackers in the division. Took a blow to the face from Hamer's rasping strike but continued immediately unnerved, as you'd expect from him. So confident on the ball and is picking his passes.

Jayson Molumby (West Brom) 8

You know the score with Molumby by now. He's energy and pressing and tenacious in the battle with bite in the tackle, but he's definitely becoming more refined under Corberan. Lots of confidence clearly, as he was bringing out some lovely skill under pressure.

Luke McNally (Coventry) 7

Picked up from where he left off against Huddersfield with a confident display early on, including making a vital block to deny a goal in the 12th minute but missed a header and opportunity to clear the long throw in for the first goal along with Doyle. Showed his physicality when he took the ball and the man to stop the troublesome Jed Wallace breaking down the left. Made a brilliant tackle to deny Thomas-Assante.

Sean Maguire (Coventry) 4

Put himself about as City battled on in search of an opening.

4/2/23

Premier League

Seamus Coleman (Everton) 8

Had got his work cut out against Gabriel Martinelli who cut loose on few occasions but the Everton captain led by example, shackling him in determined fashion while setting up Calvert-Lewin with a slick cross in stoppage time.

Gavin Bazunu (Southampton) 6

Rounded by Yoane Wissa inside the first ten minutes but was relieved to see the forward hit the crossbar. Did well to claim the ball after a flick on from a long throw while Christian Norgaard closed him down. Could do little for the goals conceded as Brentford players were allowed time and space to pick out their spots.

Championship

Josh Cullen (Burnley) 8

Started really impressively and continued to tick Burnley over.

John Egan (Sheffield United) 6

Solid in the middle of the three and won most of the crosses that came his way. Up against new signing Hugill and he got little change out of the Republic of Ireland man.

Sean McLoughlin (Hull) 7.5

Steady enough first half, aside from one moment when his flick almost cost his side. Excellent in the second.

Cyrus Christie (Hull) 8

Enjoyed plenty of joy from the first minute down the right flank, and even more in in the second. Came close to scoring before he eventually did with a curling effort. A threat all afternoon.

Aaron Connolly (Hull) 7

Ran his socks off in the first period, like a terrier. Never gave the visitors a minute, was a real menace. Deserved a goal but was sacrificed in the final 10 minutes.

Mark McGuinness (Cardiff) 6

Another decent performance, in fairness. Solid in the heart of the defence. Won everything in the air all afternoon.

Callum O'Dowda (Cardiff) 6 - Star Man

If Cardiff were going to find a breakthrough, it surely would have come through him. Showed plenty of zip out wide and was one of the few able to open up the Hull defence. Only possible criticism is that he was arguably partially culpable for allowing Christie the space to score.

Callum Robinson (Cardiff) 4

Head clearly dropped after the penalty miss. A frustrating day at the office for the forward. Subbed.

Will Smallbone (Stoke) 5

Silly foul by corner flag gave Luton good free-kick chance then booked late on.

Darragh Lenihan (Middlesbrough) 7

Another typically solid performance, albeit against a side that didn't have much attacking intent. So unlucky not to break the deadlock when he hit the bar early on.

Andy Lyons (Blackpool) 6.5

Got forward at times from right wing-back role and put in some dangerous deliveries from set pieces. But was pinned back defensively for much of game due to Boro's attack.

CJ Hamilton (Blackpool) 7

Caught out defensively at times but added some pace going forwards for the Seasiders. One of main attacking outlets for the Seasiders, particularly after the break.

Alan Browne (Preston) 7

Committed shift from the skipper, who looked as sharp as anyone in home colours. Created the early chance for Cannon with a cross to the back post and saw a left-footed volley saved. Got up and down pretty well, even if everything didn't come off for him.

Robbie Brady (Preston) 4

Costly error for the first Bristol City goal. Kept plugging away down that left but it just didn't happen for him. Saw one shot deflect just wide in the second half.

Tom Cannon (Preston) 6

Full of running and determination, even if the final touch, pass or shot eluded him at times. Had a big chance to head PNE ahead but saw it saved early on. O'Leary kept his powerful volley out just after half-time.

Greg Cunningham (Preston) 6

Slotted in for Lindsay in the heart of defence with no real fuss. Back on the pitch and put in a steady 45 minute shift.

Max O'Leary (Bristol City) 7

A big save early on which came just a minute before City's opener when he denied Cannon from close range. Three top-class saves to deny Evans in the first half and Cannon at the beginning of the second. His one error led to a goal when he fumbled a strike from distance. An easy eight if it wasn't for the fumble.

Mark Sykes (Bristol City) 7

Gifted the opening goal when taking advantage of Brady's error but showed composure to round the keeper before firing into an empty net. Enjoyed space early on in the game but faded as the contest went on. Moved to wing-back for the final 20 minutes.

Jeff Hendrick (Reading) 8

Was tidy and neat for the first hour but began to stamp his authority on the game for the final 30 minutes, culminating in a stunning volley to draw the sides level.

Shane Long (Reading) 6

Ran hard, as you would expect, but saw little in the way of shooting chances. Won a clever penalty to kickstart the comeback.

Ryan Manning (Swansea) 7

The Irishman made a number of timely tackles to help keep Swansea on top. Always able to join attacks, such was his side's dominance of the ball and carried a real threat from the left in another fine display.

Kevin Long (Birmingham) 5

Looked way off the pace in the first half again, a weak early header inviting a shot from Piroe. Did OK after the move to a back four but Harlee Dean's return can't come quickly enough.

Scott Hogan (Birmingham) 5.5

Squeezed his penalty past Fisher but looked exasperated as Blues were so wasteful with what little possession they had in the first 45. After that he was never more than on the fringes of the game.

League 1

Paudie O’Connor (Lincoln) 7

Solid once again and made a great challenge on Liam Coyle late on to preserve City’s clean sheet.

Sean Roughan (Lincoln) 7

Had a slightly tougher time in the first-half against Longelo but improved in the second and produced an outstanding touch to put Lincoln two ahead.

Olamide Shodipo (Lincoln) 7

Struggled early on against Astley but seemed to gain confidence as Lincoln went further ahead and was at the centre of the action that resulted in Perritt getting sent off.

Dawson Devoy (MK Dons) 7

Played the key ball for Eisa to win the early penalty. Showed some muscle in the centre of the park.

Richard Keogh (Ipswich) 5

In to try and help Ipswich look after the physical threat of Joe Ironside, who Cambridge look to play off whenever possible. It worked to an extent, but Ipswich were guilty of backing off at times when that second ball came loose. Had a few occasions where he was seriously tested for pace and, though he was beaten, Cambridge either couldn’t take advantage or he did enough to rectify the situation.

Marcus Harness (Ipswich) 6

The third of the three half-time substitutes made a positive contribution during his time on the pitch, including a brilliant through-ball for Burns. He occupied a role which tried to link an under-manned midfield to attack and did a good job of it.

Eiran Cashin (Derby) 8

A triumphant return to the starting 11 and the young defender hardly put a foot wrong as normal service was resumed alongside Forsyth in the back four.

Jason Knight (Derby) 8.5

Such an energetic performance from the midfielder who just never stopped. A real livewire in the heart of midfield and even more important now Max Bird is injured. Sets the tone.

Conor Hourihane (Derby) 8

Had a solid game in the heart of midfield and just kept possession and moved the ball smartly in the heart of midfield. Just cleared the bar with a free-kick.

James Collins (Derby) 8

Some Derby fans may question his lack of goalscoring form, but his overall contribution to the team is so important. Works so hard and always occupies defenders hence why he won the penalty for McGoldrick's hat-trick. Scored from the spot too.

David McGoldrick (Derby) 9 - Star Man

Conjured up a wonderful finish right on the stroke of half-time which was the hallmark of a player that is far too good for League One. It's a treat to watch him when he's in this kind of form. A third hat-trick of the season and was unstoppable.

Tony Springett (Derby) 6

Buzzed away at the top end of the pitch.

Jack Taylor (Peterborough) 6

By his own high standards he was no better than average before limping off with a sore ankle.

Sean Raggett (Portsmouth) 8

Bernard’s arrival has created added pressure and the centre-half responded superbly. Rock solid throughout, dominant aerially and also used possession well.

Tyreik Wright (Plymouth) 6

Started the match in one of two the 'number 10' roles alongside Finn Azaz, and had a free-kick from the edge of the Owls' box parried away by Cameron Dawson. Moved to left wing-back from the start of the second half after Edwards was taken off.

Finn Azaz (Plymouth) 5

Argyle just could not get their attacking playmaker into the game, whether that was alongside Tyreik Wright in the first half, or on his own behind striker Sam Cosgrove and Ryan Hardie in the second half.

Scottish Premiership

Liam Scales (Aberdeen) 6

Was guilty of some stray passes early on, but grew into the game as it went on and threaded some nice forward balls down the left.

Jonny Hayes (Aberdeen) 7

A typical performance from the Irishman, who also registered an assist after setting up Duk for the opener. Unfortunately didn't see out the half and had to be replaced by Hayden Coulson.

6/2/23

Championship

James McClean - Wigan 7

Wife Erin gave birth to the couple's fourth child before kick-off, never any chance he wouldn't have played - and made an impression.

Will Keane - Wigan 6

Not one of his stand-out games but played his part in the link-up play.

7/2/23

Championship

CJ Hamilton - Blackpool 5.5

Back in more familiar role on the left wing. Put in a few decent crosses from that flank but overall lacked much impact. Brought off after 70 minutes.

Andy Lyons - Blackpool 7

Played at right-back and had tough evening defensively up against Jack Rudoni. Tried to get forward when he could though and scored sublime equaliser for his first goal in English football.

FA Cup

Josh Cullen - Burnley 7

Improved the tempo of the play from deep.

Marcus Harness - Ipswich 7

The attacker played from the left side and worked hard to link play for his team, having a shot of his own saved and producing a really nice touch which freed Leigh and Jackson to create a chance for the latter, before being replaced.

Louie Watson - Luton 4

Tough evening for the youngster as on a difficult pitch and up against a Grimsby side who roared out of the blocks to suffocate him of time and space, struggled to get into the game. Flighted one good cross in for Adebayo but didn’t react well to stop the ball reaching Orsi for the second goal. Late challenge saw him booked which meant he made way with Thorpe at the break.

John Egan - Sheffield United 7

Saw a header at the back post saved by Lainton after a dangerous Osborn corner. Organised the defence and kept a tricky customer in the form of Mullin reasonably quiet. Some key tackles and interceptions.

8/2/23

FA Cup

Shane Duffy - Fulham 7.5

Duffy showed no signs of rust in just his second start for the club, shown by a gorgeous cross-field pass within the first five minute towards Manor Solomon. His passing was generally of good quality and he was rarely beaten in the first half. While his legs seemed to wear second half, he still popped up with a valuable late assist for Fulham’s third goal.

10/2/23

Championship

Kevin Long - Birmingham 7.5

Looked to be the weak link in a defence that wasn't hugely tested in the first half, an under-hit back-pass almost caused his team problems. However, to his credit he was solid in the second half.

Scott Hogan - Birmingham 7

Worked hard on the press but wasn''t sharp enough to take his one half-chance in the first period. Had a better opening in the second but headed wide. Not his razor-sharp best.

Dara O'Shea - West Brom 6

The mix of brawn in Jutkiewicz and fleet of foot in compatriot Hogan was a tricky enough prospect for young captain O'Shea to deal with, but he coped well enough for the most part and looked to remain as composed as possible in a difficult environment.

Jayson Molumby - West Brom 5

Usually runs himself into the ground but he was chasing shadows at times here up against the excellent Bielik and Hannibal in the middle. Without doubt one of Albion's unsung heroes this season who has improved under Corberan, but this one fell short of his high standards.

11/2/23

Premier League

Evan Ferguson - Brighton 5

The Irish striker made his return from injury as he was introduced from the bench. He put in a shift, but like Undav, didn't have any real chances of note.

Gavin Bazunu - Southampton 6

Had very little to do in the first half. Slightly more involved in the second period but was denied a clean sheet by Jan Bednarek's comical own-goal, before conceding the second late on.

Championship

Andy Lyons - Blackpool 7

Rewarded for midweek goal and performance with start. Was positive going forward, but caught out at times defensively.

CJ Hamilton - Blackpool 6.5

Got in behind the Millers several times on the left flank and caused problems. However, lack of end product from winger and was take off on 65 minutes.

Conor Coventry - Rotherham 6

Did a steady job in midfield.

Chiedozie Ogbene - Rotherham 5

Pretty anonymous until hitting the crossbar in stoppage time.

Max O'Leary - Bristol City 8

Obviously playing with plenty of confidence at the minute, especially coming out and commanding his area. Made a good low save to deny Pukki at the near post in the first half. Kicking slightly wayward on occasions but other than that, another solid performance.

Mark Sykes - Bristol City 8

Another goal added to the tally for the in-form winger who slipped the ball under Angus Gunn to open the scoring. Worked incredibly hard, particularly defensively alongside the excellent George Tanner.

Josh Cullen - Burnley 9

Sets the tempo in this team and is an instrumental part of the Burnley success.

Michael Obafemi - Burnley 6

Given 20 minutes for his debut and showed promise.

Alan Browne - Preston 6

Saw a scuffed shot saved soon after Burnley's opener. Tough task up against Zaroury - who caused the PNE skipper problems. Headed a Cannon cross wide in the second half.

Robbie Brady - Preston 5

Brought some intensity early doors on derby day but Tella then grew into the game and asked him massive questions with his blistering pace. PNE's number 11 didn't really have any answer to that.

Tom Cannon - Preston 6

Pressed with pace and purpose, but Burnley managed to play their way out all game. Had a couple of runs down the left and created two chances for Browne with crosses.

Troy Parrott - Preston 5

Played in the pocket behind Delap and Cannon but just couldn't get into the game.

Mark McGuinness - Cardiff 6

Positionally excellent and made some big challenges early on. Barely put a foot out of line all afternoon - again.

Callum O'Dowda - Cardiff 5

So unlike him to give the ball away for Boro's second goal. Was his typical, consistently good self until then and afterwards, to be fair.

Callum Robinson - Cardiff 6 - Star Man

Really smart to intercept Zack Steffen's pass before setting up Kaba for his goal. Moved out to the wing in the second half and looked better as the game went on.

Darragh Lenihan - Middlesbrough 8

Super at the back as standard. He won everything that came his way, allowing Boro to quickly reset and get back to the attack.

Luke McNally - Coventry 7

Had a tough test against the big and physical Elijah Adebayo who was a real handful but stood up to the challenge well in a testing first half. Intercepted a ball brilliantly and drove forward and had a shot early in the second half but unable to get enough power to test the keeper.

Jimmy Dunne - QPR 5

Was caused problems by Millwall’s attack – and missed a late chance to equalise when he fired over.

Sinclair Armstrong - QPR 6

The 19-year-old striker lacks an end product at the moment but his pace and strength were a problem for Millwall and got the crowd going.

Danny McNamara - Millwall 7

Offered real positivity on the right flank and was well-positioned defensively to cut out a number of R’s attacks.

John Egan - Sheffield United 6

Solid once again from the Republic of Ireland international. Reading of the game was good and important, too, with the way Swansea pass the ball and look to slip runners in behind the defence. Unlucky not to score with a bullet header from a corner.

Ryan Manning - Swansea 5

Lively in the opening stages but, as with others, got pushed back. Will be disappointed not to have done better in the build-up to the Blades' opener. Worked hard defensively, making plenty of tackles and had a good spell in attack in the second half but didn't have the end product.

Will Smallbone - Stoke 6

Tied together some attacking moves and showed energy without being a threat.

Sean McLoughlin - Hull 8

Him and Jones saw far too much action early on, but defended well. Both him and Jones were very good.

Cyrus Christie - Hull 6

Marked out of the game going forward in the first half, but settled in and did his defensive work diligently.

Aaron Connolly - Hull 6

Not in the first half of the first half, before fizzing an effort wide after taking a delicious touch from Ozan's ball. Blazed the game's best chance over the bar early in the second half. Was not happy at being brought off.

Jeff Hendrick - Reading 5

Drifted around the middle of the park but had very little impact on the game. Provided an option at the edge of the box when Reading were deep in Sunderland territory.

Shane Long - Reading 6

Drifted into open space to invite balls through on the counter attack early on and was found on a couple of occasions but nothing gained. Played a clever backheel from the byline to Baba Rahman inside the box.

Sammie Szmodics - Blackburn 6

Brought on for fresh legs for Dack.

League 1

Marcus Harness - Ipswich 6

Some good work in dangerous areas during his spell in the game, as well as some good defensive work at times.

Paudie O’Connor - Lincoln 6

Was solid for most of the game except one poor sequence in the second half which led to him playing Rushworth into trouble.

Sean Roughan - Lincoln 7

Found lots of space down the left-hand side. Quality wasn’t always the best, but also put in a great defensive shift.

Olamide Shodipo - Lincoln 6

Did his job tracking back, but couldn’t get on the ball as much as he would’ve liked.

Dawson Devoy - MK Dons 7.5

Linked up really well with Eisa in the first-half especially.

Conor Grant - MK Dons 6

Chased and harried late on.

Jack Taylor - Peterborough 4.5

A disappointment after a couple of first-half midfield thrusts. Made a couple of poor decisions when in possession. Cautioned for a poor challenge and quite rightly substituted as the game was lost by then.

Finn Azaz - Plymouth 7

Replaced Callum Wright in the number 10 position behind the two strikers in the 67th minute and made an almost immediate impact, scoring Argyle's second goal with a cool, low finish after he pounced on the loose ball after his attempted through ball for Ryan Hardie was blocked.

Sean Raggett - Portsmouth 6

A bit of a mixed bag. Some excellent moments and exposed for others, but relishes a battle and that’s what it was at times for the Blues, particularly when up against Sam Cosgrove.

Eiran Cashin - Derby 6

When the space presented itself, Cashin stepped into midfield to find a couple of neat passes. Produced a brilliant clearance in the second half.

Jason Knight - Derby 5

Wycombe's midfield stopped Derby's from really putting their stamp on this game in the first half, but he was given a bit more space in the second half.

Conor Hourihane - Derby 4.5

Wycombe did not make the mistake they did in the first game between the sides earlier this season by allowing him time. That said had a decent chance early on.

James Collins - Derby 5

Battled away up front which led to him chasing a lot of lost causes, but he hung in there and managed to draw Derby level from close range.

David McGoldrick - Derby 5

Tried his best to influence the game and it looked like it was going to be one of those afternoons, but showed that one moment of class that led to Collins' equaliser.

11/2/23

League 1

Jordan Shipley - Shrewsbury 7

The wing-back offered a good outlet down the left side, and got forward well. He will be pleased with his afternoon’s work.

Killian Phillips - Shrewsbury 9

Got his first Town goal and was absolutely brilliant all afternoon. He seems to be loving his time at Salop since arriving early in January. Immense.

13/2/23

Premier League

Seamus Coleman - Everton 5

Always gives everything but while he rolled back the years against Arsenal the were times here on his 400th appearance that it’s painfully obvious Everton’s warrior captain in his 35th year as he – and other defenders it must be said – were left chasing shadows.

14/2/23

Championship

Scott Hogan - Birmingham 5

Totally on the fringes of the game. Spent his evening looking for scraps and making runs that weren't fed.

Mark McGuinness - Cardiff 9 (Star Man)

Up against the formidable Lukas Jutkiewicz and gave as good as he got. Not put a foot out of line since re-joining, really. Taken a load off the manager's mind with another giant display.

Callum O'Dowda - Cardiff 8

Added to City's attack and stuck to his task well in defence. Another who looks comfortable in this role at wing-back. Won the free-kick for Ng's goal.

Callum Robinson - Cardiff 8

Flicked a clever ball in for Wickham with his first touch. Then took on a number of players before smashing home a goal of his own.

Luke McNally - Coventry 7.5

Continued to impress as he played on the front foot with bags of confidence with another consistent display on the right of the back three. Kept his cool amid the late Millwall pressure when he cleared off the line to deny Shackleton an equaliser five minutes from time.

Sean McLoughlin - Hull 6

Similar to Stoke, had to head and kick lots away in the first half. Nothing changed in the second half, and had to do a lot of work.

Cyrus Christie - Hull 5

Completely done by Hernandez for the Norwich equaliser, improved after that, and did his work well before going off injured.

Jimmy Dunne - QPR 5

Always committed, but the mistakes keep coming, including when he misjudged a routine ball over the top in the first half and it almost led to a goal.

Sinclair Armstrong - QPR 6

Introduced in the second half. Exciting but the end product isn’t there yet.

Josh Cullen - Burnley 7.5

Great vision shown in the middle of the park and fantastic energy too. Very reliable in possession.

Michael Obafemi - Burnley 6.5

Came on towards the end. Was booked but in the right place to net dramatic late leveller.

Jeff Hendrick - Reading 5

Went close early on with a low shot which was on target but was well blocked and also had an effort just after half time which was saved at the near post.

Shane Long - Reading 4

Offered next to nothing up front aside from his usual intense pressing and high workrate. Admittedly, he was starved of service. Withdrawn at half time.

League 1

Dawson Devoy - MK Dons 6.5

Helped Dons create some good threatening attacking moments.

Marcus Harness - Ipswich 4

Back into the side and, like his fellow attackers, found the going tough as the Blues had good spells of possession but weren’t able to create too much with it. Had a couple of efforts on goal but couldn’t force the issue.

Eiran Cashin - Derby 6

Had some good moments, but then some uncharacteristically bad moments. Gave the ball away on a couple of occasions.

Conor Hourihane - Derby 7

Scored the goal to get Derby back on terms.

Jason Knight - Derby 6

Got on the ball a good amount in a deep role in the first half.

David McGoldrick - Derby 8 (Star Man)

Superb from the Rams’ talisman once again. Showed a touch of quality whenever he was on the ball and took the shot that fell to Hourihane.

James Collins - Derby 4

Offered very little in the first half and couldn’t influence the game up top. Hooked at the break.

Paudie O’Connor - Lincoln 7

Helped City hold out for a point and defended doggedly alongside his two other centre-halves.

Sean Roughan - Lincoln 9 (Star Man)

One of the performances of the season from the youngster, was absolutely superb and didn’t put a foot wrong as he kept one of the league’s most dangerous attackers in Nathaniel Mendez-Laing quiet.

Olamide Shodipo - Lincoln 7

Was at the right place at the right time to convert his first goal for the club since arriving in January. Looked offside but he won’t care.

Jack Taylor - Peterborough 6

Struck a great shot that the goalkeeper tipped onto the crossbar superbly in the early stages, but he also struggled to open up a packed defence after that. Sidefooted a decent chance wide.

Joe Rafferty - Portsmouth 7

He marked his comeback with a fantastic outing at right-back. Wouldn’t have known he’s been sidelined for five months.

Sean Raggett - Portsmouth 7

Great aerial presence as always, there were plenty of questions about the defender after his performance at Plymouth, but remained strong throughout the evening.

15/2/23

Championship

Max O'Leary - Bristol City 6

Usually so good defending his area, he had a couple of nervy moments from crosses including missing one in the first half which almost proved costly. Had little chance with the equalising goal. Made a good save against Lang in the 80th minute.

James McClean - Wigan 7

Received his customary 90-minute booing from the opposition fans but didn't let it get to him.

Will Keane - Wigan 6

Played his part as Latics improved after the break.

Greg Cunningham - Preston 6

Operated in the middle of PNE's back three and then in a central pair following the red card. Didn't do a great deal wrong over the course of the game and got stuck in. One dodgy pass in the second half which allowed Luton to break.

Alan Browne - Preston 6

Neat and tidy enough on the ball and put himself about in the middle of the park throughout. Went back to right-back in the second half. Picked out Parrott in the first half with a clever lofted pass.

Troy Parrott - Preston 7

Stepped up and delivered from the spot with an emphatic penalty. Isolated up there for large parts but had a couple of moments over the piece.

Tom Cannon - Preston 5

Grafted away up there but a difficult night on the whole. Struggled to look after the ball but admittedly had a lack of support or service - especially in the first half. Sent a shot narrowly wide after PNE's equaliser.

Will Smallbone - Stoke 7

Worked hard, linked play and put in some useful corners, including for Jagielka goal. Clever crossfield pass that led to opener.

Ryan Manning - Swansea 7

Operating at left wing-back, the Irishman got forward at every opportunity and put in a number of dangerous deliveries into the Blackpool box, one of which saw him claim an assist for Sorinola. Did more defending late on after a change of shape.

Andy Lyons - Blackpool 6

Another steady game. Not quite as adventurous going forwards as we’ve seen in the past but didn’t do a lot wrong.

CJ Hamilton - Blackpool 5

Helped Blackpool get up the pitch with his pace down the left flank but his end product left a lot to be desired.

John Egan - Sheffield United 5

Will be disappointed with the equaliser. Committed to Akpom but he went past him far too easily and also had two bites at the second goal but was unable to clear.

Darragh Lenihan - Middlesbrough 8

Couldn't beat McBurnie in the air for the early Sheffield United goal but didn't lose a single header after. Some crucial tackles throughout.

Dara O'Shea - West Brom 7

There were a few nervy moments at the back as Albion considered their passing game in their own defensive third, something which heightened the anxiety of the crowd, but O'Shea came out of it with a display of high confidence. Good with his balls into the channels and as fearless as ever.

Jayson Molumby - West Brom 7

Might've scored before he did, when he hit the post with a shot from range. In the right place for his first Hawthorns goal, but late conceding of the ball was costly when it led to the free kick.

17/2/23

Championship

Mark McGuinness - Cardiff 7

A little lucky, perhaps, not to see red for a late challenge on Amadou Mbengue. Otherwise, as solid as you'd like.

Callum O'Dowda - Cardiff 9 (Star Man)

Cardiff's most dangerous player. Tore Junior Hoilett apart down City's left and stuck countless crosses into dangerous areas. Kaba could have done better with one or two.

Callum Robinson - Cardiff 8

Just a classy operator and looked really dangerous in that No. 10 role. Created and linked up with the strikers well. Smashed one effort into the crossbar in the second half.

18/2/23

Premier League

Evan Ferguson - Brighton 6

Had a few good battles with Tim Ream and fashioned a few half chances for himself but Fulham's defence made it difficult for him at times.

Gavin Bazunu - Southampton 8

Strong first 45 minutes from Bazunu who was off his line several times to win the ball. Kept that up in the second half under more pressure and claimed several high crosses when crowded by Blue shirts.

Seamus Coleman - Everton 9 (Star Man)

Sensational strike from the captain to beat Illan Meslier from the tightest of angles out wide, he’d already been getting forward to good effect for most of the afternoon.

Championship

John Egan - Sheffield United 4

Lost Bradshaw for the opener, who ran across him to fire Millwall in front. Then gave a sloppy pass away that put his side in trouble but luckily Millwall wasted the opportunity. United's defence were all at sea early doors and he was caught ball watching for the third as Bradshaw had the simple task of slotting home unmarked for the winner.

Ryan Manning - Swansea 7

The Irishman's energy on the left caused Blackburn problems while his ability to press and win the ball at crucial moments helped keep Swansea on the front foot. Tackled for fun, to his credit.

Andy Lyons - Blackpool 6

Lyons had a quiet first half attacking-wise. He dealt with a tough customer in Tyrese Campbell and was taken off as he looked tired.

CJ Hamilton - Blackpool 6

After coming off the bench at half time, Hamilton had a chance just before the hour mark, but dragged the ball wide of the target, when he should’ve been doing better.

Will Smallbone - Stoke 6

Should have buried first-half chance. Let down by lack of teammates attacking balls in final third. Close with free-kick into side netting.

Scott Hogan - Birmingham 5.5

Another match in which he was unable to make much impact, with Town going long he couldn't press and Blues' inability to play through Huddersfield's press meant there weren't any goal-scoring opportunities.

Sean McLoughlin - Hull 7

One howler in the first half of relative control. Had more to do second half when Troy Parrott came on, but was solid.

Cyrus Christie - Hull 7

One terrific piece of defending on the cover sticks in the mind from the first half. Kept going but was well-managed going forward.

Greg Cunningham - Preston 7

Made an important tackle on Pelkas in the opening exchanges and went about his business in assured fashion - firstly in the middle of the back three and then at left centre-back.

Alan Browne - Preston 7

In central midfield again and competed fine over the piece. Got up and down and tried to create things in and around the box.

Tom Cannon - Preston 6

Isolated for large parts of the game and had little to feed off, but kept running the hard yards and tried to look after the ball for his team. Created the big chance for Parrott.

Troy Parrott - Preston 6

Did impact the game in the second half. Went looking for the ball, brought others into the game and ran at defenders. Spurned PNE's big opportunity of the match, which he will be frustrated with.

Josh Cullen - Burnley 7

Energetic in the middle of the park and generally reliable in possession.

Darragh Lenihan - Middlesbrough 8

Rock solid once again at the back for Boro as he marked Chris Martin out of the game and made some big blocks as is standard for the stand-in skipper.

Jimmy Dunne - QPR 8 (Star Man)

Having switched sides with Rob Dickie to play on the right of the centre-back pair, Dunne produced an excellent performance, winning several challenges.

Luke McNally - Coventry 7

Continued to impress by playing on the front foot, attacking the ball and winning his challenges. Particularly good in the air and read the ball very well, getting a foot in well as Rotherham pressed late on.

Max O'Leary - Bristol City 7

Had little to do in the first half but showed great anticipation to come off his line to intercept a dangerous pass forward. No chance of keeping out the opener. Kept City in it with a smart save with 12 minutes to play.

Mark Sykes - Bristol City 7

Could have won a penalty in the first-half when he goes down in the area after nutmegging his man. Played a superb cross to the back post in which Mehmeti should have gambled on. Moved to wing-back for the final 20 minutes.

League 1

Eiran Cashin - Derby 9 (Star Man)

Man of the match display at the back and deserved his goal. The more the young defender is entrusted by Warne, the more he'll blossom. Won everything thrown at him and, with a win, goal and clean sheet, is doesn't get much better.

Jason Knight - Derby 7.5

Mr Reliable once again for County. Continued to be a powerhouse in the middle, looking to set up an attack or offer his services in the final third when needed.

Conor Hourihane - Derby 8.5

Once again a major presence on the pitch for Warne's men in the heart of midfield. Followed up Tuesday night's goal with two assists, winning the penalty and providing the delivery for Cashin's goal.

David McGoldrick - Derby 8

Scored his first goal since his hat-trick against Morecambe and was lively throughout. Dropped deep when needed to help his side and was a constant menace for the Charlton defence to deal with. Definitely should have scored more than his one goal though.

Paudie O’Connor - Lincoln 8

A man mountain at the back, headed everything away and shouldered the responsibility of being Lincoln’s rock when Jackson went off injured.

Sean Roughan - Lincoln 6

Put a fantastic ball over the top to Diamond in the first half which should’ve resulted in the opener. Did well defensively in the first-half, but struggled more in the second.

Olamide Shodipo - Lincoln 8

Best game in a City shirt for the winger. Looked confident after opening his account in midweek, and worked so hard down the left flank.

Danny Mandroiu - Lincoln 6

Hit the woodwork with an outstanding strike, but looked a little rusty after a prolonged period out of the side.

Joe Rafferty - Portsmouth 9 (Star Man)

Continues to look a class act since returning from long-term injury. Defensively excellent, letting nothing past, while comfort on the ball means he’s always willing to assist in attack.

Sean Raggett - Portsmouth 8

So strong on his Lincoln return. Won everything in the area and, apart from one dicey first-half moment, was largely fully in command in defensive situations.

Ronan Curtis - Portsmouth 7

As ever, in the thick of the action, winning free-kicks and even having a penalty shout against him. Also had very good goal-scoring opportunities. Never quiet.

Jack Taylor - Peterborough 8 (Star Man)

Moved classily through this game against vastly inferior opponents. His goal entered the roof of the net via a deflection, but was on target anyway. Won tackles, got Posh moving forward impressively. Man of the match.

Tyreik Wright - Plymouth 6

Put in a couple of dangerous crosses in the first half but there was not enough of them to put the visitors under any real pressure.

Finn Azaz - Plymouth 5

The loan signing from Aston Villa did not have his usual spark about his attacking play, although he did have one good second half strike blocked by Toto Nsiala.

Scottish Premiership

Aiden McGeady - Hibs 7

Got an assist in his half-an-hour and played another couple of dangerous balls. Pulled up after taking another touch on the break instead of playing through Elie Youan.

Jake Doyle-Hayes - Hibs 6

Came on for Jeggo with the game done.

Excellent job as usual, You Tell Me -  despite the fact you've been branded a  "fickle fan" by one of the more fickle fans about.
