I used "give it the long finger" rather than "put it on the long finger" at work once.

Well, as long as you acknowledged your mistake relatively quickly and let people know what you really meant, it can happen to anyone.

Bit awkward if you didn't correct yourself at all though!

Greed has won, big finance has won. Whatever small role elite clubs still play in the local communities from which they grew is dwarfed now by their position as global brands.

Hardly ever used correctly.

Only 'begs the question' is a more abused term.

Don’t know if any of you are familiar with that Newry health meals business man of the year guru, but have to laugh every morning when he announces that he’s ready for another big day of “cool calm and collective” business

if it's a catchphrase he uses, it could be a play on it. Cool, Calm and Collective makes sense if used in a business networking sense.
It would damage this forums' reputation

'On the team' instead of 'in the team'. 'On the weekend' rather that 'at the weekend'. Both annoying, US-inspired twattery.

'Lay' rather than they 'lie', depending on context, is a particularly f**kwitted Americanism. You 'lie' on a bed not lay on it. You 'lay' a carpet.

Was that Bob Dylan song about laying carpets?
