Gary Pallister.  Never thought he was a particularly great defender despite his reputation as a legend.

Colin Hendry.  Loved to dive in to rash headless tackles.

It's always surprised me to hear people say he was very quick. I don' really remember him playing am I'm judging him by appearance but he wouldn't have struck me as someone who was quick.

Said it many times, Schmeichel Snr. A good Euro 92 made him famous and for some reason it was only very late in his time at Man U that his mistakes were scrutinised.

Agree with all except Beckham. On his day he was top class. Stood up to be counted when required more than often.

Michael Owen also scored the most over rated goal of all time when he scored for England vs Argentina. He ran from the halfway line at two defenders 30 yards apart who were both on Yellow Cards and finished to the net. People still talk about it as he did what Maradona did in 86.

Yeah Beckham was excellent but he will still overrated.  He was placed in the category as the best players in the world many times when I felt he was the 4th best midfielder at utd behind Keane Scholes and Giggs simply because of his fame.  That’s not taking away from his ability but he was overrated.

Beckham’s abilities as a dead ball specialist and a crosser made him almost the opposite of a player whose general suite of attributes would make them “Mr Dependable”. He struggled to track back, wasn’t particularly good in the tackle, occasionally his temperament let him down, and ultimately was dispensable at both Man U, and Real Madrid. He was also less than versatile.

But, when you are as strong as he was in terms of his eye for long range goals and his ability to hit a free kick was as good as it was, he was fodder for any highlights reel, and adding to that his commercial viability he was a very public figure too. Taking that all into account, some might see Beckham as better than he was.

But don’t get me wrong, he was a superb player who enjoyed a very full and Rich career.

Yeah there is a load of English players over the years who fall into the category, I'd agree with Baldricks assessment of Beckham too, he was excellent at what he was good at, but he was nowhere near Man Utd or Real Madrid's best player.

I'd actually throw a few more Real Madrid players into the mix,

Roberto Carlos- decent going forward but couldn't defend to save his life, also took one magically free kick and was deemed to be a set-piece specialist.

Higuian -was seen as world class in his prime but dear me he made Morata look competent in front of goal.

Marcelo- falls into same category as Roberto Carlos decent going forward but a liability in defence.

The price tag makes him overrated and the English banged on about how brilliant he was at the Euro’s! A truly average defender, United need to bring in a decent partner for Varane in the summer.

I assume you're basing that on WC final & CL final in '06. He should have scored in both games, albeit through chances made by himself, but I thought he was excellent in both games. Worth noting that in both games, his team were down to 10 men for the majority of the game.

Its maybe because we live close to England and have full exposure to their television and media a lot of the time. But they do have a tendency to hype up every decent young player to come through the ranks or show a bit of form.

Who exactly has rated Dele Alli though, in the last 5 years.

Who are we to talk.  The amount of players people on this forum hype up because they scored a few goals at kiddies level.

There's very few doing it at senior level.  The way people talk is we have this wave of talent coming through.

Fully agree

We're as bad if not worse. But a lot of that is driven through desperation

He's fallen quite a bit hasn't he. His record by the time he was 21 was fantastic, twice named PFA young player of the year, in one season he got 18 goals, in 2018 he was a main part of Englands team that got to them the WC semi final, in 2019 a big part of Spurs that got them toe Champions League final. Only Owen, Fowler and Rooney had more goals before their 21st birthday, so he'd more than Ronaldo, Beckham, Scholes, Lampard etc who all played more games at that stage.

Gone completely off the boil since that CL final tho, not sure if it's the manager, the turnover in players, or he just got lazy.
