It was erected by The Coors to lure unsuspecting football supporters to their doom.

If its a fingerpost signlike one in the pic then probably just been turned the wrong direction. Happens all the time with them.

Funny thing is its not one of them type signposts.

Is it an old sign? Could predate the motorway exits and link roads

There's three exits for Dundalk, the 1st exit does indeed have a sign for oriel park, and it is correct, the issue however is that I don't think there's a sign telling you to take the turn which would be the 1st right almost straight after you leave the motorway.

this road will bring you on to the ardee road which brings you down to the garda barracks, turn left there and it brigs you straight to the ground

No its a modern one. You drive up the hill/exit from the M1 and come to a roundabout. The first exit has 'Oriel Park 6km' pointing out into the countryside.  The sign is brown with a football symbol beside it.Its a fixed plate sign. To get to Dundalk you have to drive around the roundabout take the 3rd exit and cross over the motorway and drive maybe 3km. Blackrock will be on the right and Dundalk town on the left.

Ah mystery solved. Very counter intuitive all the same taking a left on the roundabout.

How that place gets cleared to play 1 round of a UEFA sanctioned match is incredible.

I saw pictures of the famous puddle at the town end so the Home sections are just as bad.

It wouldn't take that long to cut the grass and tree in the away end. Take for example St Pats, a club of the same size, same capacity stadium. Their club asked their fans to help with small things like painting and cutting weeds. Dundalk should ask their fans to help out. There's no need for a thorn bus to be in the middle of a stand.
