He duly got his three points against the bus drivers, even though it took 94 minutes to get them. The winner was the 27th goal they had already conceded in the campaign.

had a feeling it was around now, great trip , pants performance , YBIG really started taking off then.

1989:

Ireland 2-0 Malta

25 years ago, John Aldridge scores his first competitive goals as we qualify for the World Cup for the first time.

Elsewhere, Denmark lose in Romania allowing Germany to squeeze through as best runner up in a 4 team group by beating Wales. Thousands of liberated East Germans travel to Vienna hoping to see their side qualify for the World Cup. However Austria beat them 3-0 and qualify instead.

Romania got to the second round of the World Cup. West Germany went on to win it, and East Germany never played a competitive game again.

Not Ireland related.

1989:

In the days before 24 hour football coverage, football fans considered this essential viewing before the weekend's action. Saint and Greavsie was the Football Focus of it's day, and arguably better too. 25 years ago today, this episode was aired.

As this show was going out on air, the revolution to depose Nicolae Ceaucescu began in Timisoara, Romania.

1 week before, Ireland were the final side drawn out at the World Cup draw in Rome.

1993:

The 25th anniversary of the 3-0 home win for WC 94.

No goals here though. This marks the 25th anniversary of something else.

Great trip. Night before was epic. Was dying the day of the game. Flight out of Bari to Pisa the next day before connecting on to Stansted and finally home, absolute ride of death!

Noel Hunt still trying to claim the goal, no doubt!

The cops trying (unsucessfully) to stop the bars selling booze on the afternoon of the game
Eamonn Dunphy:"I'll tell you who wrote it, Rod Liddle, he's the guy who ran away and left his wife for a young one".

I met him and Ian Harte out in Galway a few years back and he was still adament it was his goal. Sound fella but was very bitter about it. Wasn't expecting him to go into that much detail about it  LOL. Looking at the goal again it looks like he initially kicks it before Robbie follows up to finish it.

Can't believe that was 9 years ago. It was my first away trip and definitely my favourite away trip. Got lost outside the stadium and finally found my way to the section I was meant to be in. Unfortunately for me, I didn't realise everyone was in the middle of a minute's silence (I think it was for the stand collapse in the Ivory Coast) so walked out blowing an air horn. Was quickly told to shut the f*ck up and get to my seat LOL
