In work, rang brother must have been 87th minute, no score we're fcuked.

Heard nothing from brother in next ten mins so assumed its over.

Then my mates Da rang him and that was it straight to the pub.

Two of us dancing/singing walking across the road everyone thinking we were mad.
Only one car beebed his horn in celebration.

Is that Giles and Maurice Setters celebrating in the studio when MacKay scored? Was that studio in the stadium or back in Dublin?
Wings? They're only the band The Beatles could have been.

Great day. Remember watching it on RTE at the time and racing outdoors when McKay scored.
Fair play to the ref for playing advantage in the lead up to the goal.
Shortly after the goal one of the Bulgarians took out McKay with a filthy tackle, dunno how he didnt at least see yellow.
To try and fail is understandable but to fail to try is inexcusable

Quote I know Charlton was on the golf course and didn't watch it as he thought it was unlikely Scotland would win.

was that live on Irish tv lads seeing as Hamilton is commentating?

Jack watched it when he could. He got a phonecall to tell him the news while he was watching a recording of the game. England's must win qualifier in Yugoslavia got obvious priority in the UK. England were 4-0 up by half time and duly qualified. Bulgaria went into transition afterwards and didn't make another tournament until someone gave the ball away in Paris 6 years later.

Yes both games kicked off at 3.30 on a Wednesday.
Those were the days.

Possibly the last time that the last day of qualifiers werent syncronised.

Am I recalling it correctly, was Michael Lyster in the studio for that game ?? Distinctly remember him tearing up a sheet of notes he had written on the latest 'hard luck Ireland' story live on air.

Twenty four years later, Ireland are back in the European Championship draw in Palats Sportu, Kiev. As among the four weakest nations in the draw, we're one of the first names out of the bowl, and fate duly puts us in to bat against 3 of the world's top 10 sides. Dunphy is excita and delira, Trap is upset at drawing Italy again, while it's time for the fans to search Skyscanner.

The rest is history.

2007:

Ireland 2-1 San Marino

The day Staunton went to Serraville, telling everyone that he wanted three points for his first away win as Ireland coach, and that San Marino would get better and better as the group went on.

He duly got his three points against the bus drivers, even though it took 94 minutes to get them. The winner was the 27th goal they had already conceded in the campaign.
