Spot on, like my mate in work who went over and said he was gonna do all the free stuff going to NYC on a small budget isn't exactly something I would recommend.

Stayed in Carter Hotel for Spain match. 1 minute walk from centre of Time Square. You're looking at approx a ton a night per room. Very basic but have stayed in worse. Its decent value IMO.

You could stay outside manhattan and commute to the city, its not as if the public transport is sh*t or anything over there. A weekly metro card will cover you everywhere on subway

A lot of the subway is open 24 hours. Just have to make sure you don't get on any express trains.
