I binged on this last night, got through the first 3 episodes. A must-watch for all football fans.
Main takeaways for me from the show... - Place is rotten to the core, basically since Havelange was made president in 74 and the money started rolling in.
- One of the main problems with the WC bid is that it's voted on by just the Executive Committee, if there were more than 24 voters, it'd be harder to bribe. When you need a majority of 24, you'll find 13 people to bribe. Those 24 were getting bribes for every WC they awarded
- In 2010 the Executive were due to vote on 2018. Most of them were getting old at this stage and figured they wouldn't be around for many more votes. So this was their last chance to take one last bribe before retiring. Someone had the genius idea to award two tournaments at once, hence doubling the bribes they got before retiring.
- Under normal circumstances, hosts were selected about 6/7 years before the tournament. With Qatar, getting it 12 years out, it allowed them more flexibility to say "we'll build this stadium/ariport/roads/city by then". If it'd had only 6/7 years to build, it'd have been tougher to convince. The gap helped Qatar.
- The bribes in Qatar were more political than before. In the past it was "here's a brown envelope with 10m for you to invest in football, no receipts needed". With Qatar it seems Thailand delegate was bought with a Gas deal, French bought with a Qatar Airways/Airbus deal. It's harder to prove that the old fashioned route
- Sounds like Blatter knew instantly that the Executive had f*cked up with the Qatar bribes. He seemed happy for bribing to go on once they could defend it somehow. With Qatar, everyone knew there were better bids, and this was going to bring too much scrutiny on dealings. He was right, if USA had got 2022, there'd likely be no downfall of Jack Warner, Bin Hamann, Blatter, FBI raid etc
Well worth 4 hours of everyone's time

That's outdated info. Nowadays, every national FA has a vote in deciding World Cup host country. This system was first used three years ago to pick the 2026 hosts. Of course it's not foolproof, but now there is up to 211 votes to bribe instead of 24.

The producer was on OTB last night. Looking forward to checking out the documentary. Have read "Red Card" by Ken Bensinger before, Jack Warner and Chuck Blazer are 2 cowboys to say the least.

Very true, but that wasn't all.
The way things worked out, the Russian vote-gathering operation co-operated closely with the Qatari operation, to transfer votes between their respective campaigns i.e. "You scratch my back and I'll scratch yours".
That way the whole process was stitched up, such that even Blatter/Warner/Blazer etc couldn't swing 2022 for the USA.
While Platinii/UEFA was in the pocket of the Qataris, which was why Blatter then brought his former protege down with him.
