lads my car is long overdue an NCT and a service. My mate was telling me to put the car through the NCT without a service then when it fails (which it will),just bring the list of problems to your garage for a fix up then get the repeat price on the NCT.Do people do this and will it work ? ie,in the NCT garage the mechanic wont stop and fail the car on the first problem then stop the test ?

I know more or less fook all about cars and some knobhead mechanic tried to charge me for 2 tyres before when I didnt need them so I'm very suspicious of them (mechanics, not tyres) now.I've never heard of this before but could it save me a few quid ?

loads of people do that if they think it has plenty of faults. The full test is conducted and you will be given the print out with all the faults.

Faulty brake pad warning light coam on my car a while, dropped it up to Advance at Croker fully convinced it needed the pads. Rang me half an hour later when I was back in work to say nothing wrong with the pads and he'd only be robbing me if he changed them. Pick it up when our ready he said no charge for fixing the warning light.

I'm a tad confused by that remark but I'll bite anyway.
Advance and the likes, pay their staff pittance and have them on bonus for parts sold.

So for example, you need 2 tyres done, you bring it up to advance/first stop/ etc etc and say hello under paid foreign man can you replace my front tyres? Yesh he says and starts but then there is a problem and he suggests that you should replace the brake pads. Brake pads? Sounds serious and important I better get them done so. An extra €100 is ok because they were badly needed after all....
Mr foreign man makes a few quid extra to feed his family this week.

Now I've no problem with people who work in them places, I do however have a major issue with companies like these, ripping off customers, offering shot wages and awful working hours and being forced to "sell" extra, unneeded parts to unassuming customers. They are killing the motor trade for real mechanics and garages.

Anyway, I'd always recommend get the NCT done first then bring if to a mechanic to fix.
It's the best €55 you'll spend on your car.

No, wasn't trying to be a smart arse, would generally hold the same opinion meself, as a qualified mechanic I thought you would say something different to the previous posters/endorsers of these lads.

The motor industry has a lot to answer for the growth of these places though, back in the day, your local garages/dealers had all these things in-house (tyres/batteries/exhausts) then when people gave up fixing cars and just bought new ones instead in the Celtic Cat years , they decided stocking all this stuff was not worth their while, leading to yer Advance/Quick fit growing. Then they realised their mistake and are trying to get all that stuff back, and now generally realise they can't compete with them pricewise. Short term thinking again.

NCT first, only way to do it, then you can decide if its worth spening the money on the car.

One tyre specialist told me I needed two tyres (very expenisve as a real oddbod size) only for the DOE centre to say loads of life left on them (commercial vehicle is DOE as against NCT - but same principle)

Most people / businesses are honest, but always well to remember buyer beware.

as someone who is into my cars and bikes I would never go to some where like Advance Pitstop for anything more than a puncture repair. If I need tyre's I'll order a good ones myself. If something mechanical needs doing I'd usually source the parts myself as you never know what patent parts / used parts might get put in rather then genuine parts in some places
