Probably because the 3 teams ahead of us are amongst the strongest from their seeding groups. The performances have not been good enough, but the draw is the worst we've ever had for a qualification group.
The draw was unkind which is true, but you would have hoped to get one point at home from the top 3 in the group...I think the groups we had for 82 and 88 were equally as hard.

Yes, we should have done better against Greece, and ultimately that's the reason Kenny will rightly lose his job. In saying that, they are an unusually strong 4th seed, they're clearly somewhat better than us, and they deserved their wins. I don't think losing to them exactly falls into the "nadir" bracket.
We're decent enough..

More than that, we had ageing sides with very little talent coming through behind them save for a few good Premier League standard players in the 1992 age group.

We have the spine of a good side at the moment, and probably the best young attacking talents we've ever had coming through in the 2000-2007 age groups. I'd be cautiously optimistic about the next few years.
Tend to agree with you for once. From year group 2001 onwards we are at least one of the top dozen international sides in Uefa, probably top 10 so eventually this should feed through to results at senior level. Will just take time. Being one of the top 12 teams in Europe should qualify us for any tournament.
My guess is from 2028 Euro qualification we will be very competitive. Though ironically might not even be in the qualifiers! World cup qualification will depend on the luck of the draw
