I know they both started out on the wing but as their careers have progressed, they really are two different types of players. Ronaldo has morphed into an out and out striker from his original position and Messi can play anywhere across the midfield even playing in a deep position.

Overall if I had to pick I would go with Messi as he's more versatile, creative and can both initiate and finish attacks.
Wings? They're only the band The Beatles could have been.

The "debate" was really a marketing vehicle driven by sponsors to keep both players and their brands in the spotlight. Messi is a far superior player. Ronaldo is a phenomenon nonetheless but he isn't/ wasnt on the same level. Both players made a fortune out of the rivalry though so I'm sure they are happy to indulge it.

Lionel Messi can win you a game if you give it to him on the half-way line.

Good viewpoint and I would add:

By far the 2 best players in the world and there has always been a big gap to #3.
Messi has been the best since he was 18 and has been very consistent
I believe Ronnie got better and better for a good 10 years and for a few years at least I’d say he was the best footballer on the planet
Glad they both won something with their respective countries

Mbappe looks like the next in line to the throne.

Messi is the best player on the planet with the ball at his feet but Ronaldo a better all round player in my opinion, so Ronaldo would get my vote if I was able to vote in this poll Ouch

If the poll was which player is likely to look at themselves in the mirror while having a peddle would the results be reversed?
It would damage this forums' reputation

I don’t think he will get to their level but I see him being the best player in the world for a good few years.

Haaland will be the next best player in the world. Kid's gonna score 30 goals a season for the next ten years if he stays injury free. He'll end up in Manchester next summer... blue or red.

Ronaldo.
Hes done it in the 3 main leagues. Done it internationally. Has totally reinvented his style as he aged.

I'd go as far to say that Ronaldo is the greatest player ever.

Messi more talented but CR7 all day long.

How has Ronaldo done it at international level and Messi has not?

Won a Euros and a NL with a more limited Portugal side.

Messinonly just recently won his first COPA.

Fair to say, CR7 has been much better internationally

Wouldn’t agree that Portugal are more limited than Argentina
The team that won the NL, if you are serious at counting that as a major trophy, was far better than the Argie team at the same time

Portugal pretty much won the euros without Ronaldo too so they couldn’t have been that limited

Ronaldo has undoubtedly performed better for Portugal compared to Messi for Argentina. That is not an argument. Ask the average Argentine and they'll tell you that.
Ronaldo also has a much, much better goalscoring record than Messi internationally.
Ronaldo has also scored more goals in the Champions League than Messi.
Ronaldo has also scored more league goals than Messi.
Ronaldo is the world record holder for goals scored - ever.
Ronaldo has been top scorer in three different countries.
Give Ronaldo Messi's career, as a striker at Barcelona for fifteen seasons and Ronaldo could replicate what Messi did in terms of numbers,.
Give Messi Ronaldo's career, at Sporting Lisbon, at Man United in the Premier League, at Real Madrid, then at Juve, then back at Man United in the toughest league in the world and it is not only unlikely, but pretty much definite, that Messi would not replicate what Ronaldo achieved.
Messi is great, Beyond great. But Ronaldo is the greatest of all time.
And I'm a Liverpool fan.
