It’s one of the biggest shows on in the summer. Like to watch it for a good laugh and it gets addicting, but completely understand it’s the definition of trash television.

Many in the pub? In most cases I would agree, but I think this is more than just a ‘sh*te’ show that can be ignored. I think this show has a dangerous cultural impact. |

Ive never watched it but I’m assuming it’s another show that can be filed under the heading of cultural terrorism

There is an element of that, I meant more the unrealistic expectations of life it seems to give off. Also, well I am far from a sexual prude, I don’t think we should be celebrating people who sleep around to get famous. It shouldn’t be glamourised. I have also become aware of the ads that are shown during it. I just find the whole thing and incredibly irresponsible. |

How come this show goes on when two former contestants have committed suicide in the last 11 months, and Jeremy Kyle was cancelled so quickly? Is it his confrontational style makes him seem like he could almost be goading someone into it?

There an awful lot of similarities between the two shows and the dangers. It appears that those who want to be contestants on 'Love Island' are often incredibly vulnerable. The fact that this is being ignored, for the sake of ratings and sponsorship from cosmetic surgery and you have something that is at least socially irresponsible. |

Never heard about the suicides - are families and friends coming out and saying it was caused by the show? can't say I've watched more than a minute at most of this sh*te. I might watch a bit of an episode this time so I can abuse people on this thread but I will say this, some people regularly watch EastEnders which is a million times worse than this reality tv crap |

I'm not sure if the families or friends have directly linked it, but it's hard not to put two and two together. |

Eastenders is just sh*te though and it actually attempts to be morally responsible, even though as a piece of throwaway television it doesn't have to. You have to admire the BBC and the programme itself for that. In fact, and I admit to watching it occasionally. The reason it gets sh*t a lot of the time is by trying to run along moral guidelines and trying to introduce storylines that are about in the difficulties people face in the modern world, often in the most unsophisticated ways imaginable. As a result, it is often unintentionally humorous, which, along with the bizarre escapism, why I don't mind when it is on. Programmes like Jeremy Kyle's and 'Love Island', which deliberately target vulnerable people; as well as setting a dangerous precedent to its viewers about how to cope with their vulnerability, and being promoted and sponsored by morally bankrupt businesses, are completely different. Nobody has committed suicide after being on Eastenders, discounting career suicide, and nobody is likely to kill themselves or have their mental illnesses made worse after watching it because they don't feel validated by a society that isn't true or real. In fact, quite the opposite! Apparently those helplines they put up at the end of an episode have been useful to people.
