The points gained from Dundalk's run in 2016 were being lost this year but that total has been bettered by the current run from the teams so it's worked in the league's favour. Temperatures in Greece will be a big factor against Bohs. Dundalk have a better chance, but Rovers have the best chance. The league champions route is by far the best chance to progress. Agree with the poster who said they should have been given a crack at the EL first though. Dropping straight down from the CL makes no sense.

this is a bit confusing...why would it make a difference? is it not going to be easier to possibly get through the conference league if you get a favourable draw like Shams? Am i right in assuming if they get over the Albanians and 1 more round then they are in the group stages proper? what difference would it have made?

What part of going from the 1st tier competition to the 3rd tier competition makes sense to you Doherty?

One thing that gets swept under the carpet with these results is that how the prize money benefits all teams in the league. For every win/draw, etc the money awarded, a proportion goes to a fund that is split amongst all LOI clubs.

You are, the fact they could get into the Europa League group stages by going that way, not to mention they'd get a chance to player better teams, have more prize money, better gate receipts, better streaming revenue etc.

Ok last stupid question. Play better teams? Wouldn't that lessen you chances of progression money etc?

Not if you dropped down into the conference league if you lost. Does seem odd you skip a competition if you lose on the champions league route. If you look a the last Europa League round, you've Celtic, Rapid Vienna and Galatasary, but likewise you've also Flora, Zalgiris and Lincoln Red Imps, regardless, it would have been better for Rovers to drop into that round than straight into the Conference League.

Rovers, Bohs and Dundalk showcased the great quality in the league of Ireland over the last few weeks in Europe . Disappointing for Bohs and Dundalk to go out but they played some very brave and controlled football at times which was fantastic to see. Rovers looked very composed this evening in Albania . Rory Gaffneys finishes were top drawer and he has been looking really good in matches I’ve seen him in recently. Hopefully they go thru to the group stages now

Anyone know what’s the highest our coefficient has ever been? We’re currently 38th.

From Dan McDonnell's weekly email today: The simple explanation is that a club's individual results determine
their seeding - which has serious relevance - whereas the coefficient
reflects the league's overall performances and only really matters at
the very top and the very bottom of the chart when Champions League
entry points and number of places in Europe are determined by it.
2021 is Ireland's best ever coefficient return in the modern scoring system. In the 'as it stands' table the LOI sits 38th out of 55th in Europe (a drop to 46th was on the cards at the start of the year) but Rovers have the chance to improve that. |

excellent stuff. The league quality has definitely improved in the last few years with the sides giving a good account of themselves against stronger league sides while also looking they are more quality against sides who have been ranked in and around our own coefficient.

Sheriff fc who were knocked out of the europa league last year by Dundalk are on the verge of qualifying for the champions league group stages as they are 3-0 up on aggregate coming up to half time in their tie with Zagreb. Big investment there. You would wonder what some half decent investment in Irish clubs could bring ..

Sheriff play in the unrecognized but independent republic of Tranistria. There was accusations that the fella that owns Sheriff (and the country) was using the club as a way of laundering the sales of illegal guns. |

It depends where the investment goes. LoI academies seem to be producing some good players across the country at the moment. Invest in the infrastructure, and everything else will follow; more fans, more interest from broadcasters, etc.

You would imagine with a name like Sheriff that their guns would be legal. Just goes to show you can't trust anyone these days.
