He has taken his chance. Impossible to drop him as long as he is doing the business.

Yes impossible to drop him at this level, but unfortunately it's below international level.

Come back to us if he starts playing regularly at left back.

He has taken his chance well, but let's not forget it was a chance that arose due to a catalogue of injuries rather than Liam playing his way in to the team. A few of those injuries are medium to long term, so he now has a chance to really go on and establish himself as a first team player.

As regards Ireland, he has to come in to the reckoning as a LB/LWB given this is likely to be both McClean and Stevens' last campaign, effectively leaving Manning, who has plenty to prove himself, as the sole LB/LWB in the squad. I dont think he'll ever be good/big enough to establish himself as a CB in the Irish squad given the competition. Is his best position not LB/LWB, I didnt see a huge amount of him at Rovers, but I thought that was the case?

He's more of a centre back who can play left back rather than the other way around unfortunately I think. Having said that, looking at our (complete lack of good) left back options, we have to start looking at other ways to fill the position.

I don't think it will happen under the current setup, the ability to problem solve like that just isn't there, as we saw in the last international window. But one possibility is to look at playing a left footed centre back at left back - and that could be someone like Scales, though a better bet might be Eiran Cashin. It's a pity he didn't get his deadline day move out of League 1.

We need someone at left back who can actually defend when we're playing against teams of our own standard and above. None of McClean, Manning or O'Dowda can defend to a decent standard in truth and teams exploit that against us time and again.

Was MoM against Rangers - a side who have equal quality to 90% of the teams our guys are playing for. Deserves his chance in Green.

Definitely not Cashin, he's 100% a Centre Back all day long. Scales at least has played the LB/LWB position (a lot at Rovers?). Furlong/Roughan if they continue to develop can force their way in to the frame. O'Dowda should not be played as a LWB vs any sort of proper opposition, he should be a back up LW for Johnston. Manning probably deserves a chance in the upcoming internationals to stake a claim. I'm far from confident he's capable, but he deserves a shot.

He's not better than our current best 3 or 4 CBs. If he deserves a shot, it's at LB/LWB.

I see a lot of stuff on twitter etc proclaiming tonight as a huge night for Scales to stake a claim, no pressure then!

Just a few things to remember before judging Liam Scales too harshly tonight

a) Celtic are missing a heap of defenders through injury
b) His CB partner is likely to be the bombscare that played vs Rangers
c) Celtic havent won an away game in Europe in donkeys.
d) Feyenoord have scored 17 in their last 3 games

How he performs on the night is down the him. If he plays well or sh*t is down to him, if his central defensive partner decides to be a liability doesn’t mean Scales has to be. Doesn’t matter how much they scored in previous games. Think like that you’ve lost before kick-off. Bit early for excuses.

I'm rooting for him, but I think it's only fair to point out that it's likely to be a difficult evening, no matter who lines out for Celtic. Just trying to provide a bit of context.

He could also step up and have a great game while others around him crumble. Who knows. He could also be the weak link at the back.  Context is for afterwards. Nothing needs putting putting in context when it hasn’t happened. If he plays sh*t he plays sh*t no excuses. He is paid to step in and perform when needed like the rest of them.

He's not some kid being thrown in at the deep end here. He's 25 and it's Feyenoord they're playing, not Real Madrid. It's time for him to make the step up now if he's going to do it.
