I think I'm going to refer to young Kelly as William moving forward each time I go and watch Reading - It feels right and proper !

Stam sacked this morning. Perhaps not good news for young William
You asked if I'd be anyone from history, fact or fiction, dead or alive:
I said "I'd be Tony Cascarino, circa 1995"

How many kids spend their holidays back in Mayo or Donegal?
There is a generation of lads, like Liam, who followed the results of both sides equally who would not have found the idea of turning up to either of the last two friendlies with a half and half scarf absurd. That is just reality. They are probably equally proud to represent both and, sadly, when a choice has to be made between one cap for England and fifty for Ireland, they will choose what is the better financial option, especially with an agent buzzing in their ear.
It is easy for us to be churlish, we never had the exact same upbringing and then the exact same choice. We are all disappointed as most of us identify as Irish and that is one of the most important part of our identity but we need to empathise with those who see it differently. Our type of Irish isn't the only one about.

Great point. Same for nvidic's post about affinity to more the one nation.

It's simple enough, he made a choice he's entitled to make, his loss if he fails to make England ranks.

Good luck to him and leave it at that.

The likes of this lad and grealish and any of the others can go and do one. Football is all about money and fame for these kind of pricks who are stupid enough to listen to some money hungry agent who feeds them horse sh*t. I hate the fact that some of these lads which probably include a few of the squad see us as a second choice behind the country of their birth. To see these take the place of an a real irishman who would walk through walls to get a place on the team grinds my f**king gears.

Plenty of "Real Irish Men" didn't/don't care to much about representing Ireland either when called upon...

Liam Kelly is focusing on his fitness and still has ambitions to play for Ireland according to the Indo, although there are no direct quotes in the story.

Why did he not pick up the phone, act like a professional and an adult, and convey this to MON...this smells off to me. Player is hedging his bets. Unless I hear from his own mouth that he wants to play for us, and just us, I'm not interested

Because he possibly wants to play for both and most people wouldn't have a problem with that if the other country was Norway, Japan or Swaziland.

Hmmm, I'd be dubious about that excuse. But at the same time I would not be in the slightest bit surprised to see him back involved in the next 6-12 months.

So he can't pick up the phone and speak to the manager about his feelings?

If this is true then O'Neill has been incredibly reckless in insinuating that he was considering jumping ship in favour of England. He's said similar things querying Rice's commitment. Rice has already accepted a call-up and is all ready to play tomorrow, having previously taken part in a training camp. It's almost as if he's willing it to happen. I just don't think he values a player like Kelly. Not an O'Neill player.

Of course he can, I didn't take umbrage with that part of your post, did I?

I think the more realistic reading of the situation was that he was already aware of the Kelly predicament before making his comments on Rice, and was thus throwing caution to the wind in light of that surprise.
