He had been in poor health for a long time ( Alzheimer's principally and some other stuff ). Certainly a visionary who was streets ahead of most of his own party and a huge influence on the peace process and the Good Friday Agreement. Sad day.

A visionary, and one of Ireland's best politicians. His involvement in the Peace Process, and all that predated it was a wonderful testament to his life, his goals, his efforts, and his vision. RIP to this fantastic peacemaker.

Giant of Irish politics and a giant of a man. Fundementally decent and should be considered an inspirational character to all on the island. One of the good guys. RIP.

I think he's our greatest person ever, and I don't use the RTE poll as reference, though I agree with its findings, I think he really is our greatest
He wasn't in it for himself, he wasn't in it for his party, he wasn't in it for glorification, he was in it because he wanted to improve the lives of others, he was selfless, as was Mallon
I don't think any of Ireland's widely eulogised historical figures match up to his contribution, though I am certainly an admirer of James Connolly The thing about Hume was that he wanted to spread goodness among everybody rather than seek greatness for himself But in that way he really was great |

Few people had a bad work to say about him which says everything and those that did is more a reflection of them than him
took political and personal risks to advance a better Ireland and we are all the better for it RIP

for any Derry person to go through and witness the harassment sectarian intimidation and blatant murder of people by “security forces”, and to remain implacably determined to improve the lot of everybody through peace was astonishing. Ireland owes this man a huge debt, a giant.
RIP

In his earlier years, Hume was also a leading light in the development of the credit union movement in Ireland which enabled the working class populous access to credit for the first time and helped improve people's lives. A true visionary in many ways.

One of our greatest ever political figures and deserves to be be up there with them.
I'd say the peace process took an awful toll on his health and he sadly wasn't able to make the most or enjoy his retirement years. I hope there's a huge public memorial event dedicated to him at some stage. RIP. Edited by irishmufc - 03 Aug 2020 at 6:01pm |

John Hume is the greatest politician this island ever had. He brought peace and united communities in a time where it looked impossible. Largely forgotten by the hard core republicans who look to McGuinness. But without John Hume Northern Ireland wouldn’t be where it is today. He gave a future to my generation. A man who’s legacy will live on forever on the island. If you don’t know who he is or what he has done for Ireland then please spend some time today getting to know him and his work. John Hume is the architect of the peace we have today and his contribution to our life particularly in the north should never be underestimated. RIP John Hume

Belated apology reported in this morning's Irish News by Ed McCann, one of the Sunday Independent's most senior executives, who has said the paper "went too far" in the "vindictive nastiness" of its attacks on John Hume during his negotiations with the IRA and admitting that their analysis at the time had not "aged well." They even refused Mark Durkan of the SDLP a right of reply to " an all-out attack on Hume mounted by the paper's star writer of the day, Eamon Dunphy, in an incendiary back page piece." A cartoon accompanying the column was interpreted as showing John Hume's hand "stained by blood." Sorry, Sindo-your mealy mouth grudging apology coming only after the man is dead just doesn't convince. The paper was, and arguably still is, as bad and as ignorant and ill-advised on the north as any of the worst English rags.
