He's only one of a number that are holding us back. Same applies to Hourihane, Hendrick, Brady and possibly one or two more.
Easy to point that out of course, harder to find the players who are good enough to replace them. But over time Connolly, Molumby, Knight and hopefully a few more will do just that.

Ah would ye stop. You have had it in for McClean since day one and refuse to see any other angle. Having a pop over his performance last night just proves that point. Play a different record ffs

By the sounds of things he was pitched in at the last minute because of the connolly situation. As usual he dug in and put in a big shift. He'll be phased over the next two years im sure

Sensational interception in the first few minutes when Slovakia broke from a corner.

And whilst he did well for that, his contribution in an attacking sense was typically non existent.

It wasn't. His interceptions created half-chances, he had one chance himself and put at least two good balls into the box. You can argue he didn't do enough offensively, but it was nowhere near 'non existent'.

Greed has won, big finance has won. Whatever small role elite clubs still play in the local communities from which they grew is dwarfed now by their position as global brands.

There was one moment last night that typified McClean as a player. He won the ball back brilliantly and preceded to pass it back to a Slovakian player to set them on a counter attack, he then chased him down and took a yellow for it.
I admire his commitment and what he's done but he needs to be phased out.

I'd play him only as cover now and more as LB cover. Are his legs are gone a little, noticed the last couple of games he is not really taking on players anymore.

That's stretching it to say the least, in order to have a very good game you would expect a far greater return in open play from a player. I wasn't happy with his inclusion, but he did alright and would have gotten pass marks. It's very clear heading into 2021 that some players roles need to be lessened while others need to be given more responsibility. |

Agree with most on his performance, I wasn't happy to see him on the team sheet mostly because he just hasn't played football this season but also because he's not suited to a passing game.
But last night he was ok, the yellow card was typical of him, he has possession of the ball, gives it away cheaply, chases it down and commits a foul resulting in a yellow. All in all a pass but thats it.

McClean's crossing which is normally blast it 500 miles an hour, low and hard hit the first man but it was the best crossing I've ever seen from him last night.
Pity he scuffed the chance where he seemed to be a bit off balance but at least he's getting in the right areas. There's no guarantee Connolly would've done much better and McClean justified his selection.

29/8 efl game - played 90 mins vs blackpool 12/9 championship game - not in squad 17/9 efl game - played 90 mins vs wolves 20/9 championship game - not in squad 23/9 efl game - played 90 mins vs Gillingham 26/9 championship game - plays 65mins 01/10 elf game - not in squad 04/10 championship game - played 9 mins So of the 5 games he played, three were efl games which were pretty much warm up games where O'Neil played fringe players like collins etc. Hes played 2 championship games one for 65mins and one for 9mins. Injury had nothing to do with him not playing any of these games. My point is that he is not selected for games due to form. |

Not in the Stoke squad today, don't think he's injured.
Good news is that collins starts, keeps a clean sheet and gets an assist

I get the impression that Michael O'Neill was happy to rely on him last season, since he knew he was just the sort of experienced battler needed to get them out of a relegation dogfight. But this season, although he's kept McClean in the squad (good trainer etc), he probably doesn't suit the style of play Michael is trying to build in his team, as he gradually weeds out the bottlers he inherited and replaces them with players of his own choice.

Gets a start for Stoke today which is really good to see.
I not a massive fan of mcclean but a lot of out players are not starting and he'll be in the next squad, it'll be a real problem if players are not getting game time. Hourihane as a case in point. Collins also starts which Is good |
