Probably not too popular a thing to be writing here but of course there is a hatred of Irish by some people in the UK. Its not that long ago that "irish" people were planting bombs in pubs and other buildings that caused damage and loss of life.
I am not saying this type of abuse is right by any means, but it is in some way understandable that there can be bitter and twisted people with that view point. Look at some of the language that is sometimes used towards the English in Ireland (even on this forum) at times.

This sort of bollocksology is part of the problem, not the solution. As someone who lives in England, I can assure you that what you said isn't the case, no more than is the reverse that there is a 'blatant ignorant hatred of the English up and down Ireland'. Saying things like this and having this mindset only muddies the waters and makes things more difficult. Unquestionably, Brexit and the political discourse since Brexit has emboldened far-right opinion and has lead to the above. Politicians and society in general must always take responsibility for their actions and how it influences people who are often vulnerable, but while it might not be the view of a single individual, it is very much the action of either a single individual or a very small group. If it was a Stoke fan that sent it, and it could be anybody from anywhere, then the responses on their forum and even on Twitter, where the lunatic fringe are usually out in force, would suggest it didn't have much support from them. In fact, if you go back to the responses in England to when James first refused to wear the poppy and the generally more reasoned debate that happened last year, it is far to say that there has been much more understanding of his stance. As for using the Tory party to highlight the contempt of British people towards Irish people, I can assure you that have similar contempt for lots of people, most of them English; and yet people still vote for them, in the way Irish people still vote for parties that treated Irish people in similar contempt. Democracy, eh? I agree that the ignorance and lack of understanding from British politicians and media (nearly always leaning right) is frustrating, it certainly helps fuel the abuse like James received above(although again, to be clear, we have no guarantee where they were from) but as they have been proving for centuries, that their ignorance is the one thing about them that is internationalist, most of the time they are even ignorant of England. To just start shouting off about 'their' ignorant hatred of Ireland is only going to fan the flames of 'our' ignorant hatred of England and will help nobody, least of all McClean.

Well said that man. There's one brief clause in a sentence which didn't make sense, maybe missing a word, but otherwise is a fantastic post. I've copied it into OneNote so I can pass it off as my own at a later date.

I've lived in England a couple of times and have never felt hated for being Irish, I think the Anglo-Irish antagonism is more one sided from our side these days, we even seem to get exempted pretty much from the anti Eastern European hysteria from the little Englander Brexit mob. The one thing I don't get is why they find the Dublin accent sexually alluring?
Don't think James doesn't enjoy all this attention he gets off issues like this, it keeps him relevant to the world as he becomes less and less relevant as a footballer.

It would be funny if it weren't so worrying. with the current political climate in the UK and idiots like Yaxley-Lennon prominent on social media, it wouldn't surprise me if some knuckle dragger decided to act on their hatred of McClean at a match or in public, similar to what happened to Lennon at Hearts away. We hear a lot about the anti-racism initiatives in English football but when it is directed against Irish people the silence is deafening, punctuated by navel-gazing on the part of the higher ups.

I am not saying it is impossible he would be attacked, but it would be far more likely in Scotland than in England. Even the reaction to the Grealish incident showed how unusual it is, although it may embolden others. You are correct about the ‘navel gazing’, but I think those who run the game like their racism to be black and white, in every way. There is complexities here that the racists or the ‘higher ups’ don’t understand, so they hope that it goes away. That negligence is quite dangerous.

I'd say McCLean only posted up the card on twitter as amusement - As death threat cards go it was more amusing than scary. |

I see Jon Walters has said that mcclean has got no help from Stoke or the fa.
About time the Irish players spoke out about this racism and the fa doing nothing about it. In fact, they should do some sort of protest before the season ends to highlight it. Whether you like him or not, what's happening to mcclean is disgraceful

Ireland players should stop wearing the poppy.
Matic stopped wearing one and not a word was said. |

The FA and the clubs should stop pushing it. It is divisive and unnecessary. Also, and I can’t believe nobody has stopped to think about this, but it is in the worst possible taste. It isn’t quite as bad as the ‘Help for Heroes’ meat products and eggs, but still seems a bit disrespectful!
It is very bad form that nothing has been said about it though, it is as if they want to ignore the issue.
