I expect the next manager to be able to extract more from the players at his disposal but I fear that the odays of qualifying for major championships is over for some time.

But a lot of that has to be down to the neglect of player development for years.

We cant keep pedaling that line.

We have a strong group of players there. 8 playing the EPL and the remaining playing the Championship.

Kenny has just turned us into a team that are very easy to beat.

The next manager has a decent squad of players capable of winning games or at least no losing them with relative ease.

It's true though - Just look at the age profile of our team and you can literally see a gap in terms of age profile.
I'm not saying that to defend Kenny, I'm not saying a new manager won't or can't do better. Just stating a fact really.

Who's the 8 playing in the EPL?

If Scotland can qualify, and Wales on the cusp of qualifying, then we can be there or thereabouts, providing of course we don't appoint yet another inept manager.

Scotland have a far better and more experienced team than us.

Many of their players play at the top clubs in England and many have champions league experience and are in the 26-30 bracket and have many years of international experience.  They are fully formed side.  Due to the 7 year talent gap our lads had to get caps ahead of their time as there as a huge lack of 22-29 year olds when Kenny took over.

The Welsh have given a fair account of themselves, we are by no measure worse than them in terms of player ability. They seem to be a very well organised unit, that can get you far.

"Following the departure of Stephen Kenny as manager of the Ireland senior men's national team, a review of the coaching staff will take place once the new Head Coach is appointed."

Be interesting to see if the likes of O'Shea is called back in once a new manager arrives. If it is Carsley, there's no way he will be taking his entire backroom staff with him from the Engalnd U21s.

I doubt it. Just poorly worded I'd imagine although I wouldn't be surprised at the same time.

"playing" is a strong term, but here's the current squad-members signed for (and not loaned out) PL teams:

Coleman (Everton)
Doherty (Wolves)
Egan (Sheffield United)
Cullen (Burnley)
O'Shea (Burnley)
Ogbene (Luton)
Obafemi (Burnley)
Kelleher (Liverpool)
Omobamidele (Forest)
Ferguson (Brighton)
Travers (Bournmouth)

Even if all were 100% fit, only Egan, Ogbene, Cullen, Ferguson and possibly Coleman would be regular starters, and time may well be up now for Coleman.

And with the likely relegations for Burnley, Luton and Sheffield, this list will be decimated come Summer.

Ah was just being pedantic.Smile

Makes it sound like we have a team full of PL regulars which is far from the case.

The only players in the squad who I would say are premier league quality are Ferguson, Collins and Coleman. Ogbene off to a good start but jury still out whether he's up to that standard. Cullen, OShea are very good Championship players. The rest aren't getting a sniff. But as has been said before, plenty of teams with less quality than us outperforming us.
