Given-7 Had nothing to do most of the game, couldn do anything 4 the goal
McShane-5 Solid, but badly at fault for the goal
Dunne- 9 A mountain at the back, really led from the back
O'Shea-8 His best game ever for IMO, distrabution was good, never looked threatened,
Kilbane-7 Another Solid performance from killer
Keogh-3 At fault for the goal, should never have started
Andrews-8 Always looking to get on the ball, thought he was excellent and surprised to see him subbed
Whealan-7 Best game for Ireland to date, battled hard throughout
S.Hunt-7 A livewire as always, won a good few frees, dead ball deliveries were shocking though
Keane-8 Popped up at the crucial time again, should have scored at the end
Doyle-7 Battled hard as ever, never really got going

Subs:
Folan-7 Thought he played really well, gives us another option up top
N.Hunt-7 Did Well when he came on, lively and unlucky not to score at the end
Gibson-6 Saw a good bit of the ball when he came on, still a year or two to early for him IMO

Trap-8 Made important changes and reall y went for it

Given-6 nothing to do really but flapped at a cross and some dodgy kicks
McShane-7 did nothing wrong and even got forward well in the first half
Dunne- 7 did fine, not busy at all
O'Shea-8 another sound performance, used the ball better going forward
Kilbane-7 Solid
Keogh-3 At fault for the goal, should never have started-agreed
Andrews-6 Always looking to get on the ball, lacked craft tho
Whealan-7 Same as andrews except better passer
S.Hunt-7 best game for ireland, dirt delivery tho
Keane-6 im a big fan and he popped up again but dropped far too deep and wasted posession
Doyle-5 outclassed by Cannavaro

Subs:
Folan-7 Thought he played well, gives us another option up top-agreed
N.Hunt-7 determined when he came on,bit more energy than Doyle tonight, did well
Gibson-6 Saw a good bit of the ball when he came on, plenty of development to come
Trap-8 Made the right decisions at the right time.

McShane does nothing wrong!! He was caught out of position several times in the first half. A liability. Trap made a great decision swapping him with O'Shea and putting him out of harms way.

it was the left full who made the run, mcshane came inside to pick up the wide player and keogh should have tracked the runner.

Given: Little to do other than the goal, genuinely can't remember him having to make a save

McShane: Can't decide if it was him or Keogh at fault for their goal. Improved immeasurably when given space to roam on the right
Dunne: Rock. Absolute rock
O'Shea: Bloodied but not unbowed. Solid again alongside Dunne, and didn't look out of place at right back. Still has to be first choice centre half though
Kilbane: As you were from Zizou, endless endeavour, possibly could have pushed on more in the second half

Keogh: As above with McShane. His substitution changed the game. Hopefully not the last we see of him, but never again on the right, please
Andrews: Could have equalised in the first half. Puzzling substitution, unless he was injured?
Whelan: Came into the game more in the second half, wanted the ball more and not afraid to take a shot either
S.Hunt: How close was he to emulating Houghton?? Never stopped running, ever. Didn't look out of place on the right, gave Grosso a massive headache. Probably his best start ever.

Keane: Worked hard with little to show for it until the goal. Could have had the winner too. Never scores against big teams? Bite me.
Doyle: Ran himself into the ground, possibly exhausted doing the same at the weekend. Thought he could have stayed on for 10 more minutes, but what do I know?

Subs:
Folan: Introduction changed the game. Gave the Italian defence a whole other headache to deal with. Could have had a goal. Very nearly his "Niall Quinn VS Germany" moment.
N.Hunt: Ran his heart out, quite possibly got the final touch on the goal
Gibson: Came in and sat beside Whelan to keep it tidy in midfield. Not yet the finished article, but showing signs of becoming something special

Ireland finally show what they can do under Trapattoni. I can only hope they continue in this vein in the upoming qualifiers. Effort of entire side improved immeasurably from the weekend. Never stopped working for the deserved equaliser. How Cannavaro stayed on the pitch, I'll never know. That midfield quartet will, in all likelihood, never start together again, but Folan proved his worth as a squad player. The question is now, does he start against Italy at home?

This result, and performance will go a long way to restore the good faith of fans of the Ireland team.

he didnt even get booked!!i know i said above that he outclassed Doyle, which he did,but he had at least 3 challenges that were 100% bookings..i suppose the sending off was a bit harsh which evens it out..

few observations

Whelen...Invisable....Gibson to start instead perhaps.
Andrews....impressed....full of running and always about
Keane....did not a dam thing except for the goal and the near winner...but...that is why he always must play...he will score those  big goals...see Germany 2002
Folan.....this WAS his Nial Quinn 2002 moment.
Trappatoni....shut a lot of people up by making clever subs at clever times....Folan and Hunt....inspired !

Given-6 lucky with the flap, solid otherwise
McShane-7 caught out for the goal, made up for it with a super performance afterwards
Dunne- 7 great game
O'Shea-8 top notch again
Kilbane-5 another poor performance from killer
Keogh-5 taught he was doing v well down the wing and clearly not at fault for the goal
Andrews-6 lacked something not thinking much of him so far
Whealan-9 unreal performnce iv been a big fan of this lad and he really stood up in italy
S.Hunt-7 won some good frees, did well
Keane-7 played v well in the first half was muck in the second til he popped up!!

Don't want to put a damper on the good mood we're all feeling but Mcshane was awful in the first half and along with Keogh was clearly at fault for the goal. He is simply not a full back whatever about being an error prone centre half. It was obvious the italians  were going at our right side. What I thought was really sad was there were a few times he was in good positions out wide attcking wise and it seemed the irish players didn't want to give him  the ball. We need Finnan back there.

Given - 6 Could do little with the goal but also had a flap. good punt forward that led to Keane's goal though
McShane-7 Could have done more with the goal but thought he did ok, him getting forward really helped open the Italian's up
Dunne- 8 Another faultless performance really. A rock
O'Shea-8 Again not faultless.
Kilbane-7 Got forward a few times but would like to see more of it from him
Keogh-4 Didn't look comfortable on the ball and then didn't track his runner for the goal, obviously not a winger
Andrews-6 wasn't a poor performance but didn't do much when he had the ball although he was showing for the ball which was much better
Whealan-7 Better than he has been latelly, was always around the centre circle available for a pass
S.Hunt-8 Very constructive apart from his delivery from set plays, otherwise he would nearly have been my MOM
Keane-7 Showed for the ball and generally looked comfortable on it, was always well marked though. But you know Keane will nearly always score when given a chance in the 6 yard box
Doyle-5 Tough night for Doyle. I heard Trap say after the game that some players were tired, think Doyle was one of them

Subs:
Folan-7 Thought he played well, again he camee out and showed for the ball in the first half and then in the second his physicality was our biggest threat. Great option now from the bench.
N.Hunt-6 Played with determination. We needed to get in their faces and he did that.
Gibson-6 Did ok. Nothing special when on the ball but at least no hiding from it like in pervious performances.
Trap-9 He showed he can make big decisions when it is not going right for us. The players we also all wanting the ball so we were playing it around the Italians, just like Bulgaria were doing to us. There wasn't that many long balls which are so easy to read. That is really what we have missed our whole campaign, the central midfielders making space and looking for the ball. When the subs happened Keane was always dropping deap and this was taking the Italians out of position and making space for the other players. Our best performance under Trap and we could have won.
Only thing is we will probably revert back to the old system in Bulgaria, we will have better players to play it returning from injury but the good thing is we now have a plan B

Given-7 Nothing much to do, couldn't have done anything for the goal

McShane-6 Thought he could have stuck a foot in for the goal, shouldnt have been passed that easily, would have Foly in front of him
Dunne-8 Super performace from Dunne again, great partnership with O'Shea formed.
O'Shea-8 As above, also did well when pushed out to the right, has really come into himself for us this campaign. Great to see.
Kilbane-7 Solid display from Killer, got down the left flank a bit more than we've seen lately. Big Improvement from Saturday.
Keogh-4 Didn't look like he was up to it for the 20 odd minutes he got and could have done more for the goal, dont rate this fella at all and was happy to see him come off.
Andrews-5 Cant wait until Steven Reid comes back for this place, Andrews hasn't been bad yet but hasn't really been good either. We need our CM's to impose themselves a bit more and he doesn't seem up to it.
Whelan-7 Good solid performance from Whelan, best so far in green I'd reckon.
Hunt-8 Thought he looked dangerous whenever he got on the ball in the 2nd half, won a good few free's down the left for us. If only Pagliuca was in goal, he would have scored and idenical goal to Houghton's!
Keane- 9 My man of the match, thought Keane was always looking for the ball and dropping deep and bringing others into the game. Good goal and could hav gotten the 2nd if only had of connnected with the boot rather than shin! Saves us again.
Doyle- 6 Disappoointed with Doyle but then again he was up against Cannavaro, who on his day can still pull out great performances.

Subs:
Folan-7 Changed the game when he came on and gave us another option. Was very pleased with his performance last night.
Hunt-7 Another one I was happy with last nigh. Always looked busy and nearly got a goal for his troubles!
Gibson- 6 Thought he was decent enough, and better than Andrews when he came on. As a few of u have already said, a work in progress. Move away from United could do him he world of good.

Trappa- 8 Great to see him finaly make a few subs when its not going right. His subs came at the right time and went for the game. Nearly got all 3 points away to Italy. Sono Il Capo is taking us to South Africa.
