Could somebody kindly explain to me why a talented gifted young prospect cannot go to Britain until he's 18? Yes, I've heard of the big B but there's a common travel area and always has been a common labour market between us and them! I fear the notion that this is a blessing in disguise forcing us to develop young players at home and kinda forcing an indigenous football industry on us is actually nonsense. Why do I say this, just look at our record to date!

I'm actually surprised that a British club hasn't found a workaround for this yet. Something along the lines of hire the player's dad as a "scout" or in a role with a club sponsor or something when the player is 15, resulting in the family moving over. Then when young Mason or whoever it is turns 16, it's not an issue because he's already living in the UK.

They have, Citeh signed Negry-Mc Grath from Bohs and sent him to Lommel SK in Belgium who they own. We will see more and more of this I'd imagine.

Yeah weren't Chelsea already caught breaking the rules signing players from outside the EU that were U18. Unless you're Evan Ferguson is it worth the hassle. More and more clubs now have links to European clubs. City have a couple and one Irish player signed for them. Tony Bloom owns Union SG, Wolves have their link with Grasshopper and Radcliffe owns Nice so United will have that link. That's the only work around unless British clubs fancy going the legal route against FIFA. Edited by J89 - 19 Nov 2023 at 3:26pm |

I think we'll see English clubs investing in Irish ones before long also.

Yeah, I agree to some extent, I'm just not sure the benefit of playing first team "mens" football aged 16/17 outweighs the benefit of being at a big professional club with top quality coaches and facilities

The best young players will still find their way to England. I don’t think it’s only down to Brexit why many Irish players don’t go to British clubs every summer like they use to, it’s mostly down to English clubs filling their academies from around the world and not just Ireland and Britain. Was getting worse before Brexit.
Brexit just makes the situation even more grave! Keith Tracy was very insightful on this. He gets the Pats U17 I think 3 times a week including a match. So there is really only enough time to work on match drill situations. Versus at Burnley when he was 16 he was arriving at the ground at 8am doing double sessions where you could work on individual techniques etc. The answer is kind of obvious for us, we need more of these full time academies!
