Don't think it should myself. With Cliftonville & Linfield pulling out it looks like the future of the cup could be in serious doubt though.

Nordies are gas.

The cup is played in their pre season and they get whacked. The cup gets moved to accomodate them

They still get whacked, so now they are too busy.

It does look like the money on offer is too poor for clubs who know they won't win it, which is a problem.

More lack of vision from the IL, small time attitude from Linfield and Cliftonville.

A very important competition to combat both Sectarianism and Racism prevalent in League of Ireland Football.  That Sectarianism already expressed in this thread.

The Cold War/No Information mentality that prevails around LoI grounds about the Irish League is disgusting and continues to be one of the great failings of individual League of Ireland fans and the representative groups.  An unwillingness and Institutional Reluctance to gain any knowledge of a very accessible League, played for the large part on Saturday afternoons and outside match-time of LoI Fans.

When Pat 'Nutsy' fenlon and Martin 'Rusty' Russell no more about Irish League than most LoI Fans and both haven't played up there in like months, that should be a concern for LoI Fans.

Individual Fans do travel to games, watching a wide variety of different clubs.  But the majority of LoI Fans still have a jingoistic Glasgow Celtic-attitude to the Irish League, IFA and Northern Ireland team.

The Setanta Sports Cup is important because the winge-buckets, abusers and pyromaniacs have to acknowledge the existence of the other team.
Fans are obliged to travel to away games and see first hand the opposition.  So the Sectarians' arguments are reduced and reduced as more LoI Fans empower themselves with Football Knowledge.

The Centenary of the Collingwood Cup is held at Historic University College Dublin, Belfield in January/February 2014.  All are Welcome.  (that will p1ss off the Sectarianists no end).

The reality is there are two countries on the island with two very different outlooks regarding domestic football in both.

The Setanta Cup should have ended long ago. The format is constantly changed, the Brit teams are cannon fodder for the Irish teams who just end up playing each other again, which clogs up an already crowded season. Some of the results are embarrassing, and it doesn't exactly capture the publics attention.

Two of their clubs have withdrawn, Ballinamallard are no more an attraction than Bray, and those fans from our country that want to see a league, will probably cool the idea when they realise it'll have to be played on Saturdays at 3pm in the middle of winter, as the other FA won't budge an inch when it comes to their schedules. Like the Setanta Cup, the league season would be suited to them, and that wouldn't go down well in our country.
VAR: Cutting the crap out of football.

No, I am not drinking but you need to accuse and abuse.

As I say, Football matches and Tournaments will bring out a spiteful, negative attitude in people.
Football matches are organised.  Anger results.

Ill have some of what your smoking ucd fan. It's a pointless competition played at the wrong time of the season. It lacks competition and the prize money no longer justifies it.

Oh the setanta cup.............replace it with a four team tournament played over 2 weekends on a semi final, final basis. LOI and IL League and Cup winners qualify.

Must be news to the Rovers fans who go to Solitude regularly and I believe Dundalk fans used to do the same with Newry.

But are the majority of IL grounds 'accessible' for southerners/Derry fans?

Even if they do, so what? Do you really expect Dubs to start following Linfield and the IFA XI?

Clearly from a fan of a club who haven't qualifed for the tourny. Get back to us when Linfield Fleg protestors throw p1ss and golfballs at you outside Windsor.

What in the name a sufferin' Jesus was this all about? Why the fook is it important for LOI fans to gain knowledge about the Irish league? I really don't get what the point (if there is one) in here is.

I enjoyed the Setanta cup originally. Lost appeal when we drew Linfield a few years in a row and the knuckle draggers emerged for their annual day out - from both clubs I hasten to add.

Now - with the winners getting 30k, runners up 10k and everyone else only 3k - its not financially attractive enough. I'm imagine it costs more than 3k to even play two matches
