I have mixed feelings about this one. On one hand it displays a good leadership trait of leading from the front, but on a practical level you would wonder how much impact he could be having working one day a week. I would have also thought he'd be flat out in his current role. I certainly see how it could be construed as a PR stunt to those of a more cynical mind - or of course to those who dislike him already.

Hopefully he can experience the reality of what frontline HSE workers are facing. No harm there.

That's a good point in fairness. As is Murph's one.

If Leo managed to save one person it would have been worth whlie .
Given he doesn’t have much experience, certainly not of the front line, isn’t there a danger he may be a hindrance? This is regardless of any politicking or PR stunts

He worked as a doctor for 7 years.
I thought it was less, regardless, it was a long time ago.

Doubt he’s flat out really! Just taking a few calls doing the media briefings all the hard work is getting done by the civil servants etc.

It’s telephone triage so not exactly front line but should free up a doctor to enter the front line.
It’s a publicity stunt but won’t do any harm

I know a couple of people who worked alongside dr nick when he last worked, and let’s just say it’s safer for all if he’s kept away from the action!

I knew he had a background in healthcare alright but until yesterday have to admit I never knew he practised as a GP for 7 years.

Assuming the worst, he's doing it for PR/propaganda reasons but his contribution is beneficial on the front lines/for the country. I'll take that given our situation, irrespective of his or previous FF governments handling of our health system . I'm no fan of him btw.

He was a Councillor and an elected TD during these 7 years, so it would be interesting to see how much work he actually did in these hospitals.

Given the disdain he has demonstrated towards ‘fellow’ healthcare professionals in the past, I doubt he spent any great amount of time on the front line, but an interesting question.

Been a TD since 2007. Qualified as a GP in 2010. Prior to 2007 he worked in a hospital as a junior doctor.

As someone said earlier, he didn't give a fiddlers when we had elderly patients dying on trollies. Would have been better to have him assessing patients then and clearing out A&E and hospital beds. PR stunt of the highest order.

Those trolleys have emptied out pretty quickly now haven't they. Most of them weren't serious cases that didn't need A&E afterall

My mother was in A&E last week, it certainly wasn’t empty and a major concern of staff is actual sick people, requiring treatment are staying away from hospital because of the Coronavirus

Yes. Don’t forget, there was a time we couldn’t access the bond markets after the Troika arrived in 2010. A large yield like that is helpful, especially at a time where the alternative to make up the undoubted structural deficit that will arise.

Did the NTMA originally undervalue the bonds before the sale? Or is it that the markets see value in Ireland and think we be back in decent shape in the next couple of years?

To be honest, I’m not sure. But it is remarkable as we were aware that an election was coming for some time, and we have not had any resolution from the election yet. So, beyond the pandemic, we are also in a transitional period in terms of leadership, so having a record yield is fantastic.
