The comparison with the bastards who've f**ked over this country is relevant though.   Yes he was greedy, yes he was stupid to think he wouldn't get rumbled, but it's nauseating and a disgrace that he gets 6 years for it with all the financial and building shenannigans and the back-slappers making sure justice is delayed by tribunals, playing dumb and clever clog lawyers.  Begley did wrong, we know that, but 6 years..............???  Fck off.

I do not agree with you.  It is nauseating and a disgrace that corrupt politicians, bankers and others are getting away with what they did.  In many cases what they did is not technically illegal and in other cases the evidence is simply not there.  Some of them will come before the courts and I hope they are treated at least as harshly as Mr. Garlic.  But the fact remains this guy perpetrated a major fraud.  He was caught.  The evidence is there.  He was brought before the coursts, convicted and sentenced.  Are we suggesting here that white collar criminals like him be treated leniently just because others are known to have pulled bigger scams and gotten away with it.

Just after reading the irish times online story of this. He actually did pay tax at 9% instead of 24% that is only applied to garlic. Set by EU apparently. Madness.

Read it again.  He paid excise @ 9% instead of 232%.  He was screwing the revenue [you and me] at the rate of €1,200 per tonne.

Inconsistancy yet again from Judges

So under paying tax on garlic (which was then later paid back) merits the same sentance as someone who ran somebody over and caused their death and someone who abused their own daughter Confused

In the last case he got a 12 year sentance, 4 six year sentences and 3 two year sentences with the last 6 suspended all to run concurrently,

I don't think anyone doubts there is a huge problem with sentencing policy in this country.  The examples quoted by Denis are both valid and illustrate the problem perfectly.  The problem imo is not that Mr Garlic's sentence was harsh but that many of the sentences for abuse and other violent crimes are ridicously low.

Meant to post this up yesterday. Really proves what a fúcking joke the justice system in this country is. Get tanked up and go out driving after 25 drinks and run someone down and kill them = 5 years in Prison.

Get caught underdeclaring VAT on garlic but begin to pay it back = 6 years

Absolute fúcking Joke

It's the inconsistency of the sentencing that infuriates me. 5 years for killing a 20 year old girl whilst p*ssed out of your head and 6 years for evading an ancient tax, WTF???
And the pricks who got this country in the state it's in sit back in their comfy houses with their big cars and Garda escorts getting away with it scot-free. Censored

This really takes the fúcking piss and makes my blood boil

Quote

Ellen O'Malley-Dunlop was responding to the case of Graham Griffiths, from Annagassan, Co Louth, saying it "sends out a wrong message".

Griffiths, 29, was told by a judge yesterday that his four-year sentence for sexual assault on a 17-year-old girl would be suspended on a number of conditions.

One of the conditions was that he pays €15,000 to his victim within one year.

Speaking on RTÉ’s Morning Ireland, Ms O'Malley-Dunlop said: "It sends out a worrying message that if you are found guilty of a crime of sexual assault, which carries a maximum penalty of five years, but if you have money, you can avoid a custodial sentence."

She said it seemed like there is one law for people who have money and one law for those who do not.

Ms O'Malley Dunlop said it was worrying, because after encouraging victims to come forward, this did not feel like an appropriate punishment.

The DRCC is calling for sentencing guidelines for judges to ensure more consistent sentencing.

"It is not good enough that somebody is allowed to avoid a custodial sentence because they can pay," she said.

What makes it even worse is that the judge that handed down this sentence is the same one who locked up your man Begley for underdeclaring VAT on garlic Angry
Eamonn Dunphy:"I'll tell you who wrote it, Rod Liddle, he's the guy who ran away and left his wife for a young one".
