Been doing a podcast for a few weeks covering Irish football in the ten years from 2000, in the most recent episode I'm joined by Mark Kennedy of Hawkeye Sidekick and Stockholm based Irish journalist Philip O'Connor to discuss Brian Kerr's reign from January 2003 until October 2005.

I really enjoyed this. Particularly as it didn't go the direction of simple revisionism. At the time of appointment, given the trend of appointing recently retired internationals with little to no management experience there was a general sense of optimism (even if it wasn't shared by everyone and his inexperience certainly was questioned).

I would agree that the decline in Irish international football began before this. Certainly the Kerr era for me was a low point and was glad when that ended. It seems that sometime during that period the international team lost its confidence and hasn't gotten it back (bar in a hand full of one off performances).

The other notable thing about the Stan era for me was that it could well have been moderately successful had Bobby Robson's health not deteriorated.

In the latest podcast episode, I'm joined again by Mark Kennedy of Hawkeye Sidekick and Philip Flanagan of The Bottomless Pit Of Football to discuss the appointment of Giovanni Trapattoni as Republic of Ireland manager, and the qualifying campaign for World Cup 2010

Darron Gibson is one of ten players released by Salford City. He will be 33 next season and it is difficult to see him salvaging his career now.
