Really? Is that not just because of wine and spirits measures being different?

Yeah, you see it on the side of cans. Think two UK units is 1.5 in Ireland.

So a double whiskey is only 2.8 units??

70ml * 40% / 1000 = 2.8.

I would say it says more about our attitude to booze. Anything to downplay our intake!

If you drink lots of small units you turn into a big unit.  You are what you drink.

70ml * 40% / 1000 = 2.8.

That's right enough. A small whiskey (Irish measure of 35.5ml) at 40% has the same number of units as a half pint of lager at 5%.

35.5 * 40 / 1000 = 1.42 which is exactly equal to be 284 * 5 / 1000 = 1.42.

A measure of spirits at 35.5ml is exactly equal to 1/16th of a pint, so a double is 1/8th of a pint, and whiskey is 8 times stronger than 5% beer, hence the reason it lines up exactly.

A pint of 5% beer has the same number of units as a double of 40% spirit.
