The playoffs aren’t so much of a dead certainty at the moment. The strong performances from Kosovo, Hungary, Romania, Israel and Finland after the 1st few qualifiers is a bit worrying. Even Serbia aren’t totally out of the running in their group despite the 5-0 drubbing to Ukraine. I still expect most of the League A and B teams to see off these teams in the end up but you never know!

Take out Swiss and Denmark who will have qualified if we are relying on a playoff and 8 out of 20 would have to not have come top 2 for this to be an issue. Realistically there won’t be any groups where neither the 1st nor 2nd seed qualify (groups now a bit skewed  - see NI fixture list for example) so then we’re down to needing 2 groups where both 1st and 2nd seeds do qualify. For me it’s a 1/50 shot we take one of those spots

EDIT - Ignored the fact that there is 10 groups v 24 teams in the 1st 2 pots. Probably looking at both Slovakia and Wales losing out in Hungary’s group.

Would love a trip to Cardiff for the playoff tournament

I genuinely don’t know what people expect, it’s largely the same group of players from Euro2016, who scrapped us to France. We scrapped ourselves to the play offs last time and had a huge opportunity but f**king blew it.

We grind results out. We lack any top European player, our best player is arguably a second half PL defender in Duffy. We grind results out. We played better v Denmark than under MON, we could have won the game late on if McClean lifted his head.

We as a nation are consistently terrible v nations we’re expected
To beat. I’m hardly surprised we struggled v Gibraltar. We score from set pieces and counter attacks. Not sides who are afraid of us.
Is that assuming Georgia don't take any points off the Danes or Swiss? I've a feeling they will, only problem is I can't see us beating Georgia away.

The way things are going, what odds would you get on none of last night's 4  strikers scoring in remaining qualifiers?
I'd say it's a possibility!

2 points and 2 or less goals from our remaining group games, I would put that double at a 3/1 chance, if such a bet was possible!
And none of the 4 hotshots scoring in the remaining 4 games wouldn't get  odds from any sane turf accountant of more than 4/1 specifically!

We need 17 points to qualify really, and that should be the goal.

Win one of the home games against the big 2, beat Georgia away and get another draw out of the remaining 2 games.

We are 23rd. Pretty much would have to have 8 teams above us not qualify. Looks highly unlikely at this point. Might not get a favorable draw however depending on how some teams like Wales who are above us finish.

Are the play offs at a neutral venue one off game or usual home and away?

How will the play-offs work?

The highest-ranked team in each League will play the country ranked fourth, with the nations placed second and third comprising the other semi-final.

Unlike previous play-offs, these will be single-leg knockout matches, with the highest-ranked teams hosting each semi-final. The host for each League's play-off final will then be drawn in advance.

From Wiki

The host of the final will be decided by a draw in November 2019 between the two semi-final pairings.[8]

So unless we meet Norn Iron in the playoffs, we will play the highest playoff side in our League on their home patch and that's just a semi, which if we get through, will lead to us playing a side, nearly as good as them, on their home patch!
So having to go through this way will be virtually impossible!Angry
Ironically, Georgia could qualify from their own league this way!
Odds on us getting to play Spain in that game in Bilbao must be at least
10/1!

Correct, people kept harping on about how "we're guaranteed a playoff" but the playoff this time round is a much lower chance than previous playoffs. This is more akin to the Championship playoffs.

It doesn't necessarily mean that. There's 8 play off spots to be filled from League A and League B. 20 teams will qualify automatically. We could possibly get a team from League A, League B or even League C depending on who fills the 20 slots. Plus the venue for the final play off will be drawn, the semi final is based on ranking, not the final.

We can’t beat anyone of note, so if we end up in the playoffs training will be entirely made up of penalty shootouts.
Greed has won, big finance has won. Whatever small role elite clubs still play in the local communities from which they grew is dwarfed now by their position as global brands.

I think we play a semi final away from home then play another game if we win, which could be at home

If we finish 4th in League B teams that haven't qualified and all the League A teams qualify, does that mean the North would get 3 League C teams in their playoff? Could very well happen...

No, because there is then a draw with various complicated rules, including that group winners (i.e. League C group winners) can't be drawn against teams from a higher league and that if the playoff brackets can be drawn in such a way as to maximise the odds of hosts making it, then that will be done.

In your example, four of the five League B teams would be drawn randomly (assuming there is only one host in that cohort, us of course) and the fifth would then go into what are technically the League A playoffs, which would be the leftover League B team and the next three best unqualified teams (i.e. the runners up etc in League C). League C group winners who don't qualify automatically are guaranteed a playoff and cannot faces teams from a higher league in that playoff.
