Despite the fact he can't get into the Spanish Squad, Mikel Arteta has been named the inaugural winner of the Premier League's Player of the Year prize at the North West Football Awards.
The Everton midfielder beat off competition from the Manchester United pairing of Wayne Rooney and Cristiano Ronaldo and Liverpool's Steven Gerrard to be named the North West's best player of 2007.
Everton skipper Phil Neville picked up the accolade on behalf of Mikel at a special awards dinner at the Midland Hotel in Manchester on Monday evening.
Voted for by supporters, more than 20,000 fans took part in the online survey earlier this year, with Mikel picking up the auspicious prize.
Arteta told evertonfc.com: "It is always nice to receive awards recognising what you have done - but even more so when it is actually voted for by the fans.
"To win this ahead of some of the best players in the world, not just the northwest, makes it very special and I am enormously grateful to all those fans who voted for me. It has been a good year for me - but I hope 2008 is even better!"
The first-ever North West Football Awards proved a successful evening, hosted by the BBC's Ray Stubbs and with the business aspect of football receiving recognition as well as the players and managers in the game.
