Topic: United Ireland v Brazil Posted: 02 Nov 2007 at 6:07am |
Just poached this letter from the indo............
United Ireland should face Brazil
< =http://www.independent.ie/search/index.jsp method=post> >
Next year marks the 35th anniversary of the historic and memorable friendly soccer game in Dublin, involving an all-Ireland team playing under the name of Shamrock Rovers, and Brazil.
With the proposed visit of Brazil to Croke Park early next year, it would surely be fitting if this all-Ireland soccer experiment were re-enacted.
There are huge potential benefits. The 1973 game involved seven players from the North, including Pat Jennings, David Craig, Allan Hunter, Martin O'Neill, Liam O'Kane, Bryan Hamilton and the late Derek Dougan.
Current Northern players have already expressed their desire to play at Croke Park.
The game could also be a tribute to the late Derek Dougan who was instrumental in organising the 1973 game.
The FAI could divert a proportion of the gate receipts to charities such as the George Best Foundation (George himself was a passionate supporter of the concept of an All Ireland side), and the 1973 team, all of whom are still alive with the exception of Derek Dougan, to the best of my knowledge, could be guests of honour.

This guy seriously has too much time on his hands. He's got a letter printed in the Irish News practically every day. Seriously Tony, other papers will actually pay you for talking sh*te in their pages.

Lads, I was at that 1973 game (I was 7) in Lansdowne and it was a brilliant occasion. It was the only thing I applaud Louis Kilcoyne for, he had alot to do with its going ahead despite opposition from Harry Cavan in the IFA, that's why it had to be called Shamrock Rovers XI. Brazil won 4-3, Jennings saved a peno from Rivelino. Resurrecting it now though would not have the same attraction, it's a different mentality these days, players going through the motions (those who bother turning up). The bandwagoners would enjoy seeing the Samba boys and they'd probably play Ireland's Bloody Call as well so it's a no-no for me this time.

We'll never die, we'll never die, we'll keep the Green Flag flying high......Shamrock Rovers will never die, we'll keep the Green Flag Flying high. 19 Leagues and 25 Cups.....

No y should we give the IFA an oppertunite to make money off of our friendly against the galacticos of international football n OUR stadium, when they refuse to let Irishmen play for THEIR country... Shower of wan*ers.
