League of Ireland champions Bohemians have been dealt a major blow with news that the Football Association of Ireland has imposed a transfer embargo due to breaches of salary cap restrictions.

Under rules implemented by the FAI over the past two years, clubs in the League of Ireland must keep the cost of player wages to less than 65 per cent of total turnover.

According to a report in Friday’s Irish Independent, Bohs are found to have been in breach of those restrictions to date in 2009.

As a result, the current Premier Division leaders will be blocked from registering new players with immediate effect – unless they manage to either attract new investment or reduce their player wage-bill.

The development comes just two days after the latest blow to the club’s hopes of moving to a new purpose-built stadium in Harristown, with Danninger Ltd, the holding company of property developer Liam Carroll, having been served with a winding-up order by the Revenue Commissioners.
