A lot of people stayed with friends/relatives etc.  In New York a friend was working there for the summer.  5 Irish lads shared a very small one bedroomed (single bed) apartment for the summer.  I was the 6th.  None of the 5 had a ticket 24 hours before the Italy game but all 5 got them including 1 for free.  Unfortunately a lot for regular fans skipped Italy as they couldn't get tickets.

In Florida I got to stay with friends of the family.  I gambled on us playing in Orlando in the Rof16 which worked out well.

There was a flight pass at the time which gave you $50 internal flights and was flexible.  Had we reached the quarter finals I would have been able to change my Tampa-JFK flight to Dalles-JFK for free.  I would have needed to get to Dallas overland.
