Premier League

Chiedozie Ogbene - Luton 7.5

With the noise levels going up whenever the ball is near him, the speed merchant didn’t quite have things his own way in the first half in which he almost charged down visiting keeper Trafford from kick off. Well marshalled and put a header wide, as he came into it a lot more after the break with Luton on the front foot. Kept getting at his man whenever he could, even when moving to wingback, but just needs that to add that finishing touch now.

Josh Cullen - Burnley 8

Stood up to the constant closing down. Involved in the build up for Foster’s goal and produced a miraculous headed clearance off the line.

Championship

Kevin Long - Birmingham 7

Long was well placed to clear ahead of a Huddersfield attacker when Ruddy dropped a cross in the second half. This was another no nonsense, solid display from the Irishman.

Scott Hogan - Birmingham 6

Eustace brought Hogan on in the hope of helping the striker end his drought, but Blues weren’t able to create a telling chance for him.

Marcus Harness - Ipswich 8

Deserved a chance to start in the Championship and he delivered. A pretty easy goal, but he still had to be there to finish it off. Some great movement and really nice touches. He'll surely be in McKenna's plans going forward.

Cyrus Christie - Hull 5

Struggled in the first half against the pace and attacking threat of the home side. Not his usual controlled self.

Aaron Connolly - Hull 5

Couldn't really get into the first half, did manage to poke a Delap cross inches wide. Tried to dig one out in the second but it went wide. Not one of his best.

Sean McLoughlin - Hull 6

Would have felt aggrieved to have been left out of the side. Got Christie out of trouble with a fine tackle.

Mark McGuinness - Cardiff 7

An unflappable presence at the heart of Cardiff's defence. On the rare occasion the ball was in the air he was there to head it clear.

Callum Robinson - Cardiff 6

Looked the brightest of the replacements. Had one shot saved by Dieng.

Finn Azaz - Plymouth 7

Was involved in a lot of Argyle's best attacking play, especially in the first half, when he fired narrowly wide on one occasion after a pass inside to him from Ryan Hardie. Stumbled inside the Millwall box rather than being fouled when the Pilgrims hopefully appealed for a second half penalty.

Mark Travers - Stoke 6

Excellent save to stop Sulemana in second half. Was grasping at thin air as Armstrong found top corner.

Luke McNally - Stoke 8

A couple of important moments as he returned to starting line-up, including flicking over Stuart Armstrong header at start of second half.

Gavin Bazunu - Southampton 7

Looked shaky early on. Improved as the game went on. Pulled off a good save when a Stoke shot was deflected from close range. Took his time on the ball and added a level of calm to the defence.

Ryan Manning - Southampton 6

Made a vital defensive intervention to stop a Stoke chance as the hosts started brightly. Manning made 65 touches in the first half - by far the most of any player.

Will Smallbone - Southampton 7

Booed early on by his former supporters. Did well to track back and marshal out a clear goalscoring opportunity.

League 1

CJ Hamilton - Blackpool 5.5

CJ Hamilton had some bright moments but couldn't provide a final product. There was a chance at 2-1 down that was really wasteful, and should've been troubling the Derby defence.

Eiran Cashin - Derby 7.5

Made a brilliant tackle to deny Jordan Rhodes in the first half which he had to get spot on and it was timed exquisitely. Worth a goal on its own. The performance deserved a clean sheet.

James Collins - Derby 7

Worked diligently across the frontline and showed some promising link-up play as he battled away up front. His industry was rewarded with a terrific goal when he lashed in Tom Barkhuizen's pass.

Conor Hourihane - Derby 5.5

Helped see out the win.

Baba Adeeko - Wigan 5.5

Perhaps fortunate to stay on the field as referee decided against a second yellow on stroke of half-time, did not reappear after the break.

Peter Kioso - Peterborough 7

Very good in the first half when he was a constant threat down the right wing and also defended robustly. Less effective after the break, but a strong display was ruined somewhat by a deflection he could have avoided ending up in the back of the net.

Tyler Goodrham - Oxford 7

Busy and involved with his pressing of Shrews players after coming on at half-time.

Joe Rafferty - Portsmouth 7

An untapped outlet for much of the first half. Pompey made better use of the the Scouser after the break with some dangerous deliveries as a result.

Conor Shaughnessy - Portsmouth 9 (Star Man)

What a night for the Irishman! Continues to go from strength to strength. Poole rightly getting the plaudits but the Irishman is hitting the heights alongside him and capped an excellent night with late, late winner.

League 2

Thomas O'Connor - Wrexham 7

The midfielder came into the defence and helped keep a clean sheet.

James McClean - Wrexham 6

Has been a bigger threat going forward but Wrexham were on the back foot.

4/10/23

Champions League

Liam Scales - Celtic 7

Another terrific defensive performance from the Irishman. Made several important blocks and despite a few stray passes, they didn’t prove costly.

Championship

Andrew Moran - Blackburn 6

Thought he'd scored only to be denied after the referee ruled it out after speaking to the linesman. Not quite as effective as against Leicester.

Sam Szmodics - Blackburn 6

A quiet performance from Szmodics, who is more involved when he plays deeper, rather than as a false nine. Worked his socks off for the team.

Sinclair Armstrong - QPR 5

Ineffective as Leeds successfully defended against his pace and power. His confidence appears to have taken a bit of a dip.

Jimmy Dunne - QPR 6

Came on as a substitute to make a welcome return to action, but he was caught out by a long ball in the build-up to Begovic being dismissed.

Greg Cunningham - Preston 6

Considering it was his first start of the season, the Irishman did himself no harm. Aggressive but assured in the bulk of his defending, but Dewsbury-Hall was too quick for the opener.

Robbie Brady - Preston 6

Played his part in PNE’s resilient first half display and tried to push on down the left to support attacks. Fatigued second half.

Will Keane - Preston 6

Put himself about up there after replacing Osmajic and linked some of PNE’s play together, but the game drifted away.

Shane Duffy - Norwich 4

Good moments as there have been in most of his games for the club so far, but fatal errors that cost them the game.

At fault for the opener with his poor pass to Adam Forshaw, but made partial amends with a goal-saving block from Jerry Yates' header late on.

His place in the team must be coming under question after a porous period for the Norwich defence.

Tony Springett - Norwich 6

A show of faith in the youngster from Wagner to give him his first league start in yellow and green. Clearly a player aligned with the City boss' principles in his hard work.

Struggled at times to find the quality to match that, but made a few positive contributions in a performance he'll likely be fairly pleased with. Left the pitch at 1-1, and may have felt he was part of a solid Championship away point had his colleagues managed to hold onto one.

Clever footwork and plenty of endeavour to dig out a good right-footed cross in the first half. Lacked the predatory instinct required to meet Jonathan Rowe's low cross before he was substituted.

Adam Idah - Norwich 4

Linked the play well, but a display that will be remembered for a shocking miss to win the game and his inability to clear the winning goal.

Przemyslaw Placheta's cross came at him with pace, but the Irishman was well positioned and had an empty goal to nod into. A huge missed opportunity.

Max O’Leary - Bristol City 6

There were, it has to be said, a few hairy moments on the deck and it was noticeable how often City tried to use him as an extra passer at the back to invite Rotherham to press, although the Millers never really took the bait.

Had to be alert to plenty of aerial balls and was confident and careful with his handling. Got something on Tyler Blackett’s shot for the equaliser, but not enough to keep it out.

Jason Knight - Bristol City 6

Quiet in an attacking sense, as Rotherham successfully kept him at arm’s length but Knight is always trying to make things happen and he’s just a ubiquitous presence, in and out of possession, always visible and working for the team. Was substituted towards the end to keep him fresh for Leeds.

Mark Sykes - Bristol City 6

Just not quite at his spiky best as maybe that foot injury he suffered last weekend was still bugging him. After a quiet first 45 minutes, he did make more of an impact after the break with a couple of smart touches to set City on their way but, overall, he struggled to fully exert his influence on the game.

5/10/23

Europa League

Evan Ferguson - Brighton 6

Looked full of confidence when he came on. Harshly booked.

6/10/23

Championship

Kevin Long - Birmingham 8

Long heads and kicks everything that comes into Blues’ box. He can play a bit too though, and helped Blues work their way through the thirds well in the first half.

Scott Hogan - Birmingham 6.5

Hogan did win the free-kick and played for the team out on the left wing in a brief cameo.

Thanks YTM - On Idah's miss, I saw the incident and nobody's scoring off that cross, absolutely drilled at him, might look bad in slow mo, but never a chance. certainly not an easy one.

Yeah, don't really understand the consternation at that miss. The ball was hammered at him and basically just hit his head, it might have went in but there was little Idah could have done to control it in any case.

Wouldn't disagree, I think though if anything their criticism of him not clearing the winning goal off the line is harsher. It was absolutely drilled at the goal, another day it hits his head and bounces away but he can't be blamed for not clearing a point blank shot hit at head height from that distance with that amount of pace on it.

Haven't seen that incident, but the interpretation would tie with the general trend of Norwich fans generally taking an unsympathetic view of Idah whatever the situation.

Premier League

Chiedozie Ogbene - Luton 8 (Star Man)

Had the odd burst in the first half, brought down by Bissouma for a booking that saw the midfielder’s silly second indiscretion punished by a red. With space opening up after the break, he was able to get at his man and get the crowd on their feet, rolling a perfect cross for Adebayo to somehow miss the target. Went on a number of dribbles as he gave the visitors' back-line some real problems in his side's ultimately unsuccessful search for an equaliser.

Josh Cullen - Burnley 5

Carried out his defensive duties but had to walk a tightrope after picking up a booking, before being replaced on the hour mark.

Dara O'Shea - Burnley 5

Not overly convincing defensively and looked sloppy in possession, often giving the ball away too easily.

Nathan Collins - Brentford 6

Endured quite a rough start to his time at Brentford, but this was better from the Irishman.

Scottish Premiership

Liam Scales - Celtic 6

The in-form defender continues his run in the starting side. Another impressive showing midweek and followed that up with a solid game. A key player in early part of campaign.

Championship

Mark McGuinness - Cardiff 8 (Star Man)

Hammered home the opening goal and defensively excellent at the back. Good on the ball, too, as ever.

Callum Robinson - Cardiff 6

Didn't do a huge amount after coming on, with Cardiff having their backs to the wall, but was tidy enough.

Shane Duffy - Norwich 8

Numerous timely blocks and aerial duels won inside his own penalty box. Slid behind the diving Gunn to clean up van Ewijk's angled low finish that might just have been veering wide of the far post. Kept Ellis Simms bottled up for the most part with his reading of the game and anticipation.

Midway through the opening period those defensive instincts thwarted a counter, after Gabby Sara and Przemyslaw Placheta had given the ball away cheaply. Blocked another attempt from Wright in the 57th minute.

Adam Idah - Norwich 6

Closed down Wilson to force an early error but Rowe's chip drifted over. Tested Wilson in the sixth minute before a lunging effort trying to connect with McCallum's cross.

On the front foot again in the 17th minute but his threaded ball intended for Rowe was intercepted. Earned the applause of his head coach for closing down Bobby Thomas midway through the opening period.

Tony Springett - Norwich 4

Not able to get close enough to van Ewijk to cut out the cross Ben Gibson diverted past Gunn.

Marcus Harness - Ipswich 7

Struggling to find a different way to describe his cameos. He did what he was brought on to do. Lively in the box, played a part in the fourth goal and did well to slow things down afterwards.

Jack Taylor - Ipswich 7

Many expected Town to bring on a more defensive replacement for Luongo, like Dom Ball, but Jack Taylor also played a part in the goal that wrapped up the win, playing a good through ball to play Hutchinson into the box.

Greg Cunningham - Preston 5

Beaten for pace on occasions and caught up the field for Williams’ goal. Kept going, but a testing 90 minutes.

Allan Browne - Preston 5

Back in the team after missing Wednesday through illness and was intense in his midfield work, but loose with some of his passing. Withdrawn at half time, on a booking.

Robbie Brady - Preston 4

His ball over the top led to PNE’s equaliser, but the Irishman struggled in the first half and was taken off at the break. Williams, who picked Brady’s pocket for the second Ipswich goal, had the beating of him down that side.

Will Keane - Preston 5

Put himself about and looked after the ball when PNE got it into his feet, but the number seven didn’t get much change out of Ipswich’s defenders.

Max O'Leary - Bristol City 7

He was always going to be a busy boy and so it proved, making strong saves from Joel Piroe (twice) and Crysencio Summerville, tipping his shot onto the post. Difficult to pin too much blame on him regarding either goal, although perhaps he could have got something on the winning strike, while his kicking looked more comfortable.

Jason Knight - Bristol City 5

Probably his least effective game in a City shirt so far as the Robins couldn’t get the Irishman on the ball enough and Leeds very cleverly bypassed him every time they were in possession. He also gave the ball away inside the area in the build-up to Dan James’ opener.

Mark Sykes - Bristol City 6

Lasted the full 90 minutes, indicating there’s no lasting issue with his fitness. Filled in at right-back in the final 30 minutes as Pearson juggled his system and stuck to his task well. Didn’t really get going as an attacking forward, sadly.

Mark Travers - Stoke 7

Smart saves to keep out Yunus and Dewsbury-Hall and claimed corners to relieve pressure, while looking like he was nursing injury.

Luke McNally - Stoke 6

Took responsibility when he could, attacking the ball. Beaten by Iheanacho and a neat finish for the opener.

Sean McLoughlin - Hull 7

Unfortunate with the Millwall opener when it hit his leg into the path of Watmore. Crisp ball over the top for Philogene's equaliser. Battled hard in the second half as the Tigers came under heavy pressure.

Cyrus Christie - Hull 6

A constant threat down the right side in the first half. Should have done better to thwart Joe Bryan for the second goal early in the second.

Aaron Connolly - Hull 5

Picked up a booking for his reaction to a foul going against his side. Struggled to get involved as City gave up possession.

Finn Azaz - Plymouth 6

Was a 66th minute straight swap for Luke Cundle but did not make much of an impact on the match.

Jimmy Dunne - QPR 6

Showed moments of quality, particularly on one occasion in the first half when he brought the ball forward. Too slow to react in the build-up to a couple of the goals though.

Sinclair Armstrong - QPR 6

A threat early on, but faded and wasn’t helped by a lack of service. Denied by a near-post save after linking up nicely with Chair in the first half.

Sam Szmodics - Blackburn 7

Far more involved in a deeper number eight role. Had a couple of chances which he might've done better with but took his chance to add number six for the season.

Andrew Moran - Blackburn 6

Missed a glorious chance to get himself on the score sheet from close range but it did come at him quickly.

Gavin Bazunu - Southampton 6

Did not have a save to make in the first half but came out of his box for a headed clearance under pressure in the second. Beaten by a brilliant lofted finish, Rotherham's first shot on target. Saved a deflected shot late in the game at 1-1.

Ryan Manning - Southampton 6

Made an important recovery in midfield to prevent a counter-attack in first-half. Delivery to Adams was pinpoint and could have been scored. Deliveries when chasing the game were not good enough.

Will Smallbone - Southampton 6

Credited with creating two chances in the first half; no player was credited with more. Unlucky not to score his second of the season as Johansson saved from close range but should have put the game to bed.

League 1

CJ Hamilton - Blackpool 7

CJ Hamilton continued his run in Blackpool's league starting line-up. The wing-back was able to get forward on a few occasions as well as contributing at the back, where he provided support to the defence.

Eiran Cashin - Derby 4.5

Distribution was iffy and had his hands full at times with Will Goodwin who proved a useful physical presence up front for the hosts.

James Collins - Derby 4.5

Was denied a goal by an unbelievable save from Luke Southwood but fortunately, Nelson was on hand to turn in the rebound. Could and perhaps should have scored with 10 minutes to go.

Conor Hourihane - Derby 4.5

A couple of neat touches.

Peter Kioso - Peterborough 6.5

He had a first 45 minutes when very little went well for him with his passing or control of the football. Linked up well with Ajiboye in the second-half though. Forced one save from the visiting keeper. Didn't have to do a lot of defending.

Joe Rafferty - Portsmouth 7

Claimed another assist this season when his half-volley was turned home by Bishop at close range. Always an attacking outlet down the right but defensively an absolute rock.

Sean Raggett - Portsmouth 7

Inevitably doesn’t have Poole’s range of passion or ability to drive up the pitch, so recall impacted on Pompey’s use of the ball from the back. But defensively still a superb performer at this level and wasn’t found wanting. Garrity cleared a second-half header off the line.

Conor Shaughnessy - Portsmouth 8

Amid a poor first half, was one of the few maintaining any sorts of standards, thankfully. In absence of Poole, took responsibility for distribution from the back and, somehow, seems to grow with each game.

Baba Adeeko - Wigan 6

Very unlucky to concede the early penalty that proved decisive, showed up well elsewhere.

League 2

Eoghan O'Connell - Wrexham 8

Strange to see someone other than Tozer as the middle centre-back but O'Connell did a very good job.

Tom O'Connor - Wrexham 7

The three centre-backs had to be on the top of their game and they dealt with everything thrown at them.

James McClean - Wrexham 7

It was tough for Wrexham but the wide-man cut out crosses to ease the pressure - all after his assist for the goal.

8/10/23

Premier League

Evan Ferguson - Brighton 5

Saw little action in the first half. Steered an effort just over in 50 minutes but struggled to make an impact and was replaced by Welbeck on the hour.

Matt Doherty - Wolves 6

Contested a good battle with Cash on the Wolves left hand side having been introduced at the break. Ventured forwards late on without reward and did just enough to put off Watkins as he pulled the trigger at the death.

21/10/23

Premier League

Matt Doherty - Wolves 6

His experience in these types of games was pivotal for Wolves. Not the attacking wing-back of years gone past but did put in a number of dangerous balls from the right.

Dara O'Shea - Burnley 5

Cleared one off the line, which at least helped to keep the score down. But struggled to deal with Brentford’s dangerous frontline.

Josh Cullen - Burnley 5

Had to walk a tightrope after being booked and struggled to get on the ball and dictate as Brentford controlled proceedings.

Evan Ferguson - Brighton 6

Brought on in the 15th minute for an injured Welbeck. Struggled to get into the game. Little service and crowded out by the City defence.

Chiedozie Ogbene - Luton 8 (Star Man)

Started off at right wingback and gave Luton an outlet in the first period, as he sent in some dangerous crosses for Brown, one just eluding his team-mate, the other turned wide of the target. Picked out the forward again after the break who headed straight at Turner before making it 2-1 when notching a first ever Premier League goal, lashing home on the volley, VAR ruling he had just stayed onside.

Championship

Greg Cunningham - Preston 5

Dived in and Flemming got away from him before firing home the equaliser. Steadied himself after that.

Robbie Brady - Preston 5

Used the ball nicely down the left flank early on and combined well with Frokjaer on occasions. Came close to scoring from a low Potts cross. Dipped in the second half and was replaced.

Will Keane - Preston 6

Tidy early play with his back to goal and teed up Frokjaer to slot home the opener. Didn’t link things quite as effectively as in previous games but showed some nice touches.

Alan Browne - Preston 6

Couldn’t help find PNE a winner but not for a lack of trying.

Sam Szmodics - Blackburn 6

Couldn't get himself into a goal-scoring opportunity. Quiet by his very high standards this season.

Mark McGuinness - Cardiff 7

So good for so much of the game but him stepping out allowed the space in behind for Rankin-Costello to be slid through on goal for his strike.

Callum Robinson - Cardiff 6

A snapshot on the half turn almost crept in the corner. Misplaced the odd pass.

Max O’Leary - Bristol City 7

His crossbar was rattled twice in the first-half and there weren’t any big saves to speak of but O’Leary dealt well with the huge volume of corners and crosses that came his way, punching cleanly and with conviction to alleviate pressure when it was needed.

Mark Sykes - Bristol City 7

He wasn’t alone in looking lost and isolated in the 3-5-2 as Coventry increasingly focused their attacks down the City right-hand side and he was frequently overmatched with Jay Dasilva causing endless issues. But once Nigel Pearson moved to a flat back four, Sykes was outstanding as a makeshift right-back, using the ball sensibly and with some excellent cover defending, particularly one moment in the second half when Milan van Ewijk sent an inviting cross into the box that looked destined to lead to a goal.

Jason Knight - Bristol City 8

Huge, huge credit to the Irishman who wasn’t declared well enough to start - so must have been really ill - and while he wasn’t quite at his sharpest, gave absolutely everything for the team.

Jimmy Dunne - QPR 6

A decent display and his return from injury has been a positive for Rangers. But he missed a good chance to equalise when he was unable to hit the target with a late header from Andre Dozzell’s corner.

Sinclair Armstrong - QPR 5

Worried Huddersfield, who were clearly aware of the threat he poses with his pace, but they dealt with him pretty easily. Denied what looked a certain equaliser by a goal-line block as he tried to force in the rebound after Clarke-Salter hit the woodwork. But for all his exciting attributes and enthusiasm, Armstrong needs to react more decisively in those situations.

Cyrus Christie - Hull 6

Up and down the right side in the first half but found it tough against the lively Sulemana. Booked at the start of the second period for a late lunge.

Aaron Connolly - Hull 6

Created one moment for Tufan who couldn't repay it.

Gavin Bazunu - Southampton 7

Save against Delap early after a Harwood-Bellis slip and another from long range in the same half. Quick off his line to dispossess Delap as he looked to score a second.

Ryan Manning - Southampton 5

Goal came from his side, after a scramble in the area. No idea what he was doing in possession when he forced himself to take a yellow card after getting in a twist in his own third. Did play a smart one-two with Edozie to create a shooting chance as Saints grew into the game.

Will Smallbone - Southampton 7

Had a deflected effort just about tipped over with Southampton's first shot. Opened the scoring with a good first-time effort. Denied a second by a good save from Allsop.

Kevin Long - Birmingham 6.5

Long got his head in the way of Fry’s header to prevent a certain goal with around 15 minutes remaining. The Irishman adapted reasonably well to Rooney’s tactics and wasn’t exposed.

Scott Hogan - Birmingham 6

The striker returned to the XI after sitting out Blues’ final two games under Eustace. He pressed well and clearly delighted Rooney with some of his movement, but he didn’t look like finding the net.

Shane Duffy - Norwich 6

Goals at both ends for the Irishman. Showed the instincts of a striker to come towards the near post and glance Sara's opening corner past Meslier. But got the last touch to Dan James' cutback, which appeared to brush Long and rear up against the defender on his goalline.

Failed to intercept James' through ball for Piroe chance in the 25th minute. Back inside his own six yard box increasingly in the final stages with another block from James.

Adam Idah - Norwich 6

Far more aggressive and much better with his back to play and defenders for company than many of his recent solo outings. That urgency was demonstrated in the 21st minute when he earned a free kick and jumped to his feet to immediately look for the more advanced Gibbs.

Robbed Rodon high up the park in the 13th minute but the Welshman got back with a sliding block. Closed down in the 39th minute as he approached the penalty area. Pinned Rodon to release Rowe in the 72nd minute.

Tony Springett - Norwich 4

Tracked back to halt a Leeds counter in the 73rd minute. But did not get close enough to James to stop a goalbound effort Long clawed around his post.

Mark Travers - Stoke 6

Pushed Bellingham shot to Clarke for equaliser. Safely handled other shots, including good save to bottom corner from Clarke.

Enda Stevens - Stoke 8

A wise old head coming to the fore at times as – bizarrely as Stoke’s longest-serving player in the starting line-up – he took captain’s armband.

Luke McNally - Stoke 8

Did his job defensively and thundered in for Stoke’s second because he wanted it more than anyone else.

Josh Key - Swansea 6

Looked like he was running through wet sand for much of the first half. Plenty of huff and puff, but looked nervous. Recovered after the break and enjoyed some really good moments at the back, but still wasn't his finest showing.

Jeff Hendrick - Sheffield Wednesday 7

Kept things ticking over and went close on a couple of occasions. Best chance was a free header just after the restart. Definitely his best outing yet.

Jayson Molumby - West Brom 5

Wasted a decent opening on the edge of the D when he fired well over the bar. A little lax on the ball.

Finn Azaz - Plymouth 7

Was up against the club where he began his career as a schoolboy before graduating from their academy - which is next door to The Hawthorns - into the professional ranks. Continued the fine form he showed prior to the two-week international break as he always looked to make incisive breaks from the centre of the pitch or set up attacks with his passing. Would have been the Star Man had it not been for the rock-solid Gibson.

League 1

Baba Adeeko - Wigan 7

Made up half of an all-Academy midfield and was impressive.

Tyler Goodrham - Oxford 6.5

A tough assignment for him to swing the momentum as the U’s sat deeper and deeper.

CJ Hamilton - Blackpool 6

It was a quiet afternoon on the whole for CJ Hamilton. The wing-back had one bright moment during the first half, but nothing came from his determination down the left side.

Peter Kioso - Peterborough 7

The usual levels of dynamism. He plays with so much energy, but it's not always matched by accuracy when passing and crossing. Might have won a late penalty.

Joe Rafferty - Peterborough 6

Perfectly sound showing from the right-back but didn’t get to the game’s forefront as he often does.

Conor Shaughnessy - Portsmouth 8 (Star Man)

Dominant and classy on the ball in a display where the defender scarcely put a foot wrong - then the late heroics!

Eiran Cashin - Derby 4.5

Had to go to ground on several occasions to make some last-ditch deflections which showed he was willing to put his body on the line. Distribution was miles off the standard required. Showed some fight.

James Collins - Derby 3

Battled away against some imposing centre-backs in what was a thankless task. Never really upset them physically and didn't have one chance all game. Subbed.

Conor Hourihane - Derby 4.5

Came on and tried to get a grip of the game. Scored an own goal which was unfortunate. Made a big tackle at the end to stop it from being 2-0.

League 2

Eoghan O'Connell - Wrexham 8

Wrexham were under the cosh in the second half but superb defending kept Bradford at bay until the equaliser.

Tom O'Connor - Wrexham 7

Played his part as the Reds' battled to keep Bradford out when they put the pressure on after the break.

James McClean - Wrexham 7

Got in some good positions when Wrexham were able to attack. Solid at the back too.

22/10/23

Scottish Premiership

Liam Scales - Celtic 8

Tidy in possession and never offered Hearts a chance to break with his incredible reading of the game. Defenders always have to be switched on when they're on the front foot and Scales did just that. An underrated component of a possession-based team.

Championship

Mark McGuinness - Cardiff 6

Another strong performance from the big man, who looked composed on the ball as ever.

Callum Robinson - Cardiff 8

Had to impress after being handed his first start of the season and certainly did so, with a clever deflected flick giving his side the lead inside two minutes. Looked dangerous whenever he went forward and had the hosts’ defence scrambling as he showed his manager what he can do.

Sam Szmodics - Blackburn 6

Could've wrapped the game up as a contest but he was denied by a brilliant Bialkowski save, with his shot pushed onto the bar. Worked hard as always.

Andrew Moran - Blackburn 6

Could've wrapped the game up and made it 3-1 but Bialkowski made the save.

Shane Duffy - Norwich 7

Fairly solid in the air, and made no significant errors in possession.

Could have been more progressive on the ball, however, and did little to close down Samuel Silvera as he fired in the goal that won it for the visitors. One fantastic intervention to bail Gabriel Sara out in the first half, clearing Hayden Hackney's shot on the line.

Nothing he could do to combat the second goal after Dimitris Giannoulis' poor pass exposed his fellow defenders.

Adam Idah - Norwich 6

Ran the channels well and held up the ball impressively, as he did on Saturday. No chances to speak of in the slightest, but one disappointing moment when his lay-off was too heavy as Rowe looked for a one-two.

Sounded initially like he was being booed off, but "Idah" chants thereafter signalled that the Barclay were actually unhappy with his replacement by Wagner.

Jimmy Dunne - QPR 4

Picked up two needless yellow cards in as many second-half minutes that turned the game in West Brom’s favour. Firstly for coming on to the field without permission from referee James Bell after receiving treatment for an injury, then talking himself in a booking for dissent following the most blatant of penalties.

League 1

CJ Hamilton - Blackpool 8

CJ Hamilton enjoyed a lot of joy down the wing against the Robins. He probably should've scored at the beginning of the second, when he cut inside from the right side, with his effort straight at the keeper.

Eiran Cashin - Derby 7

The defender cruised through this game and while a couple of straight passes over the top were not too accurate his work in playing out wide was nice and crisp. Defended solidly.

Conor Hourihane - Derby 6

No doubting his ability to find a pass in what was a measured performance by the captain who spread the ball around nicely at times. Nearly created a goal for Cashin in the second half.

James Collins - Derby 5

Missed a pass when Barkhuizen was in acres of space but opted to shoot. Put his hand up to apologise.

Peter Kioso - Peterborough 5.5

A ragged display from the captain who often left his man free on the wing. Hardly seen going forward apart from the opening stages of each half. One of five Posh cautions and he was eventually substituted.

Baba Adeeko - Wigan 8

Arguably his best game for the club, managed to stand out despite picking up a cheap early booking.

Tyler Goodrham - Oxford 7

United’s brightest spark in the first half, but his impact waned and was withdrawn just after the hour mark.

League 2

Eoghan O'Connell - Wrexham 6

Went off injured after 30 minutes but hadn't put a foot wrong.

Tom O'Connor - Wrexham 6

The Reds' defence had a lot more to do in the second half.

James McClean - Wrexham 6

Made some good runs down the left flank and got into decent positions.

25/10/23

Champions League

Liam Scales - Celtic 7

Rose to the occasion once again with another assured display. Won most of his duels and helped to limit Atletico’s attacking threat. Continues to display a terrific passing range.

Championship

Kevin Long - Birmingham 5

Long showed plenty of fight, and received a booking for a scuffle with Delap in the second half, but he was exposed too many times at the back. The system Blues are now playing is causing the previously imperious defender problems.

Sean McLoughlin - Hull 8

Rock steady in the first half on his return to the side and that theme continued in the second half. A really good showing.

Cyrus Christie - Hull 6

An insurance policy in the closing stages as City saw it out with little concern.

Marcus Harness - Ipswich 6

Harried and chased after coming on, trying to alleviate the pressure on the Blues.

Max O'Leary - Bristol City 6

File under “mixed bag”. The City keeper made some excellent saves, from Sam Morsy and George Hirst in the first half, and then low to his left to deny Leif Davis shortly after half-time. But the one he should probably have kept out, Nathan Broadhead’s strike, was close enough whereby he’d be frustrated not to have done better. Outside of that crucial, which it ultimately was, moment his goal-kicking and handling was mostly very good.

Mark Sykes - Bristol City 7

He’s doing a proper job for the team in fulfilling a task in a position that isn’t his specialised one but the Irishman continues to put in a right old shift and for that alone deserves credit. The sight of Nathan Broadhead and Leif Davis was a constant consideration which was probably why he wasn’t able to get forward as regularly as he’d like but there were some moments in the first 45 minutes when he did get to the byline and release a cross.

Jason Knight - Bristol City 7

Welcome back. Not that he’s been away but Knight is clearly approaching 100 per cent and yet again he was everywhere, linking the play and snapping into tackles. What perhaps held him back ever-so slightly was that final pass but he remains such an important player in this team.

Finn Azaz - Plymouth 8 (Star Man)

Had an excellent game for Argyle, either popping up in several good scoring positions or finding space to create chances for team-mates, such as when Ryan Hardie grabbed the Pilgrims' third goal. It was just a shame Azaz could not come up with the goal which his fine display deserved. Has already proven this season he is a very capable Championship player.

Greg Cunningham - Preston 7

Slotted in at left-back with Ryan Lowe opting for a back four. Put in an assured performance on the whole and a definite improvement on recent displays.

Alan Browne - Preston 8

Set the tone early doors with his energy and intensity. Put in a solid shift on his return to the team.

Will Keane - Preston 6.5

Worked tirelessly off the ball and saw a goal bound shot blocked on the line by Walker-Peters’ hand late in the first half. Slotted into the number 10 role when Osmajic came on and did fine.

Gavin Bazunu - Southampton 7

Forced into a good early save to deny Millar in the first 10 minutes. Pulled off a fantastic close- range save to keep his side ahead. Had little chance of saving Milutin Osmajic's rocket. Not protected by his defence for Preston's second, but it did go through his legs. Contested for the ball which led to Saints last-minute equaliser.

Will Smallbone - Southampton 6

Booked in the first half for preventing the hosts from launching a counterattack. Fizzed a dangerous ball into Adam Armstrong, who knocked the ball wide. Withdrawn after Saints went behind.

Georgie Kelly - Rotherham 6

Chested the ball down for Rathbone's goal.

Mark Travers - Stoke 7

Decent first half saves to stop Piroe and Rutter and safe hands through the second. Big punches to late corners.

Luke McNally - Stoke 8

Looking more confident and capable of working the ball out from the back. Threat at dead balls.

26/10/23

Europa League

Evan Ferguson - Brighton 6

Occupied the defenders well but still looking to end his mini goal drought for Albion. Not a great touch to end a promising move, not quite at his best.

Caoimhin Kelleher - Liverpool 6

Completely exposed for Toulouse equaliser and got away with bad clearance in second half. Otherwise not much else to do.

Premier League

Nathan Collins - Brentford 8

Like Flekken has endured a rocky start to life at Brentford and like Flekken was a huge net positive today.

Dara O'Shea - Burnley 6

Made two or three important blocks and interceptions but also a little rash in other instances. Nodded back the header for Taylor’s goal.

Josh Cullen - Burnley 5

Caught napping on the ball on two or three occasions and picked up his fifth booking of the season, meaning he’ll miss Palace next week.

Scottish Premiership

Liam Scales - Celtic 7 (Star Man)

Another composed performance from the Irishman. Looking more composed as the games pass by and a left-footed centre-half is such a key commodity for any side.

Championship

Gavin Bazunu - Southampton 7

Confident and clever playing out from the back quickly. Fortunate to get away with not conceding a penalty in the first half. Not too much else to do and goal was not saveable.

Will Smallbone - Southampton 6

Quiet start but tidy in possession as usual. Least impactful of the midfield three with next to no expected goals or assists all afternoon. Replaced in the last 10 minutes with the team flagging.

Scott Hogan - Birmingham 5.5

Hogan started out on the right before moving into his preferred position in the middle. He went close with an effort from distance in stoppage time.

Sam Szmodics - Blackburn 6

Had a few sights of goal and looked most likely to deliver a goal. His best effort was down the throat of Carl Rushworth after a nice move.

Andrew Moran - Birmingham 6

Couldn't influence things in the final third.

Mark McGuinness - Cardiff 7

Beastly in the air all afternoon. Complemented Goutas really nicely throughout the afternoon.

Callum Robinson - Cardiff 6

Plenty of endeavour for much of the afternoon. Might well have scored just after the break had his effort not been blocked. Otherwise seldom looked like scoring. Still a useful performance, but he might well be a little frustrated.

Max O'Leary - Bristol City 4

Made some routine saves but really really should have punched that corner clear. It dropped five yards out in the middle of his goal and by not coming out, he's gambling a defender will clear it. But instead, it was Perry Ng with a free header. It was uphill for City from that moment.

Mark Sykes - Bristol City 7 (Star Man)

Had some great moments in the first half at left back, and defended well throughout. Never gave up and was City's stand out performer, if there was one at all...

Jason Knight - Bristol City 6

Forced to play a bit deeper and didn't get forward as much as he would have liked. Two long range efforts came close, but lacked a creative spark.

Sean McLoughlin - Hull 7

Impressive first period and that continued into the second half as balls were pumped into their box. Headed and kicked everything.

Cyrus Christie - Hull 6

Gave his side a useful outlet in the closing stages and was an experienced head at the back in the crucial stages.

Greg Cunningham - Preston 5

Forced off after half-an-hour with a knock. Had gone into the book for a late foul on Delap.

Alan Browne - Preston 8 (Star Man)

Was the main threat in PNE’s side and the heartbeat of the performance. Created a chance for Millar and had a massive penalty shout turned down on 47 minutes, at 0-0. Didn’t deserve to be on the losing side.

Will Keane - Preston 5

Had to make way on 30 minutes along with Cunningham. Was seen to by the physio and brought off straight away. Wasn’t able to turn an early opening into a chance for PNE.

Robbie Brady - Preston 6

Entered the fray at the same time as Woodburn. Played higher up, with Best on the pitch and sent set pieces into the box.

Marcus Harness - Ipswich 8

Yet another fantastic cameo, doing the two things he was brought on to do. Firstly, he bagged the Blues' third goal of the game, tucking a good shot into the net after his initial effort was blocked. He then did incredibly well to slow down the momentum of the game by carrying the ball out of the danger zone in vital moments. He's so important in this squad.

Jack Taylor - Ipswich 7

Replaced Luongo well, linking up play with real composure. Needs more minutes to really hit his best, but he showed what he can do.

Jack Bonham - Stoke 8

Positive in trying to take command of situations and a flying, fingertip save to stop Coburn.

Enda Stevens - Stoke 8

In a real test with Isiah Jones’s pace and, if at first that looked ominous, he used his head to keep a handle on the winger.

Luke McNally - Stoke 8

Absolutely determined performance from central defence pair, seeming to take on extra responsibility.

Kasey McAteer - Leicester 6

For his first game back after a few weeks out, and after just one training session, he was very lively. He lacked a bit of quality in the final third though.

Shane Duffy - Norwich 3

Two poor pieces of decision-making from such an experienced player led to two Sunderland goals. Lunged at Hume's effort, but merely diverted the shot beyond Long via his left knee from the middle of his six yard box.

Then dispossessed by the razor sharp Clarke, who committed Kenny McLean and went down before slotting the match-sealing penalty. Key early block from Hume snapshot. Left a calling card on Jobe Bellingham in the 20th minute.

Got his body between the attacker and the ball to shield it back to Long shortly after the interval with Sunderland starting on the front foot.

League 1

CJ Hamilton - Blackpool 6

CJ Hamilton wasn't really given much room to work with throughout the game. There were a couple of good moments from the wing-back before he was subbed off in the second half.

Peter Kioso - Peterborough 7

Made a telling impact in the closing stages when he closed down two defenders to win the ball for the fourth and important goal.

Tyler Goodrham - Oxford 6.5

Was relatively bright and whistled a late effort from range over the crossbar.

Joe Rafferty - Portsmouth 8

Put in a few crosses, but couldn’t influence Pompey for once. Yet it was his defensive performance which shone, digging in and ushering the Blues through testing periods, particularly late on.

Conor Shaughnessy - Portsmouth 8

Denied a first-half goal when his header from Sparkes’ free-kick was superbly saved. Was huge presence late on when Reading capitalised on Pompey’s substitutions to enjoy their best spell of the second half, winning everything aerially.

Eiran Cashin - Derby 4.5

Got exposed when Stevenage played down his side of the pitch as Elliot List caused him problems in a foot race. Won his headers but got booked.

Conor Hourihane - Derby 4

Not a game for his technical attributes and it was a game when the ball often flew over the midfield's heads in the first half. Fared a bit better in the second half when Derby went to a three at the back.

James Collins - Derby 4

Curled one shot at the goalkeeper.

Baba Adeeko - Wigan 8 (Star Man)

Another man-of-the-match showing from a youngster with a big future.

League 2

Tom O'Connor - Wrexham 8

Didn’t put a foot wrong and dealt with everything thrown at him. All the defenders were at the top of their game.

James McClean - Wrexham 8

Put in some excellent crosses and arguably had his best game for Wrexham.

29/10/23

Premier League

Chiedozie Ogbene - Luton 6.5

Turned by McGinn for the opening goal, but was behind Luton’s best moment in the first half as he sped away on the left and almost picked out Morris. With Villa on top he didn't have that many chances to stretch his legs until after the break, but despite his clear pace advantage, Premier League defenders are a different class, as they were able to keep him at bay for the majority.

Evan Ferguson - Brighton 7

Scores very highly for a calm and confident finish as he guided his shot inside the post. That was the highlight of what was generally quite a quiet afternoon. Tried to catch out Leno at his near post later in the half.

5 Irish players made the Championship Team of the Week

3. Finn Azaz (Plymouth) - 8.66 rating

Remaining at Home Park, Plymouth's Finn Azaz earned the WhoScored.com player of the match award having returned a rating of 8.66. Azaz was directly involved in two of Plymouth's three goals, following up his 34th-minute assist for Bali Mumba with a goal of his own four minutes later. Those came from respective returns of three key passes and two shots, while the 23-year-old also completed three dribbles to make the side.

2. Andrew Moran (Blackburn) - 8.72 rating

Blackburn secured one of the results of the weekend as they beat Norwich 3-1 at Carrow Road on Sunday afternoon. Winger Andrew Moran registered a brace of assists in the win, those coming from three key passes, and he chipped in with five dribbles as the Canaries backline struggled to contain the 20-year-old, who is good value for his inclusion with a WhoScored.com rating of 8.72.

1. Sammie Szmodics (Blackburn) - 9.17 rating

Remaining at Carrow Road, Sammie Szmodics is the WhoScored.com Championship player of the week having returned a rating of 9.17. The 28-year-old netted either side of half time, getting the better of George Long with two of four shots, and he was a real handful for the Norwich backline having completed three dribbles and created two goalscoring opportunities in a standout display.

Browne & Harness the other 2.

31/10/23

League 1

Conor Hourihane - Derby 7

Unlike the weekend, Derby managed to get him more of the ball and he conjured up a quite wonderful pass for Max Bird to score his second.

James Collins - Derby 5.5

Had a hand in one fine move that led to a chance for Barkhuizen. Could have scored too.

Tyler Goodrham - Oxford 7

Much better display after a couple of shaky performances in recent games. Fluctuations in form only natural, with a return to his best surely a matter of time.

Baba Adeeko - Wigan 5

Found himself over-run in the engine room, and picked up a costly fifth booking of the season, triggering a ban.

1/11/23

EFL Cup

Caoimhin Kelleher - Liverpool 7

Safe handling in slippery conditions when fielding a number of shots and good save from Tavernier second half.

Andrew Moran - Blackburn 6

Worked diligently to track James and tried to pose a threat going the other way. Didn't see lots of the ball.

Dara O'Shea - Burnley 5

A display of real contrasts. Made some important blocks but looked nervy and rash and struggled with Calvert-Lewin’s physicality.

Josh Cullen - Burnley 5

Improved in the first-half from recent performances but struggled to make any impact in the second. Will miss out through suspension on Saturday.

Marcus Harness - Ipswich 6

Drew more fouls than anyone else on the pitch (3) and won the most duels (6). Showed some good moments, but Ipswich couldn't get the ball to him enough. Had just 35 touches, which was the least of any outfield player across the 90 minutes.

Jack Taylor - Ipswich 6

Had some nice moments on the ball. Perhaps looked a bit more comfortable than his midfield partner, but also got lost as Fulham knocked it around.

Scottish Premiership

Liam Scales - Celtic 7

Surprise package for Brendan Rodgers this season. Continues to hold down his starting spot. Defended well again. Calm and composed.

Jamie McGrath - Aberdeen 9 (Star Man)

The Republic of Ireland international stole the show with two goals to take his tally to four in Aberdeen colours. Showed his instinctive reactions inside the box to find the net on both occasions, and is more than capable of finishing the season on double figures in terms of his goals and assists output.

League 1

CJ Hamilton - Blackpool 6

CJ Hamilton is always going to cause trouble with his pace, but his decision making and final product wasn't good enough at times. There was also a bizarre piece of defending towards the end of the first half.

4/11/23

Premier League

Dara O'Shea - Burnley 6

Clearance for Palace’s second wasn’t the best but he defended well in the main and helped set up attacks from deep.

Evan Ferguson - Brighton 6

Well marshalled by the Everton big men and did not offer the outlet and movement Albion were looking for.

Championship

Marcus Harness - Ipswich 8 (Star Man)

Outstanding. Yet another incredible cameo performance. In a game where Town looked devoid of ideas going forward at times, he was the man in the middle of everything when he came on. Lively and clinical. Stunning volley for the late equaliser.

Jack Taylor - Ipswich 6

Had a fierce shot in stoppage time that could've won the game.

Max O'Leary - Bristol City 7

People may leave Ashton Gate grumbling about his distribution as there were two notable incidents in the first-half where he rolled one pass into the path of Barry Bannan and a second out of play but the Robins were trying to invite the press and then consequently play through the first line of attack and although the execution wasn’t there, the theory was sound.

Beyond that, his handling was excellent particularly in claiming crosses and there was one excellent save from Dominic Iorfa at the start of the second half, and probably an even better one in the closing stages from Ashley Fletcher at point-blank range.

Jason Knight - Bristol City 8

His performance personified probably by one of the final moments of the match as, with Sheffield Wednesday pushing for an unlikely equaliser, he was on the toes of any man in blue and white, made a tackle, won the ball back and then drew a foul. He was everyone. Once again and probably would have scored the opener if not for Bannan’s trip which led to the red card.

Mark Sykes - Bristol City 7

Had some bright moments in the first half when he tried to come off the right wing and attack the box but, a bit like with Pring, the Owls successfully squeezed the pitch and when he did get it, he was often a little isolated. That all said, when he moved back to right-back following Tanner’s substitution he was excellent. A victim of his own success, in that regard.

Gavin Bazunu - Southampton 7

One early moment of panicky distribution straight out of play saw him lectured from afar by Martin, while the Irishman defended his decision. Nothing to do during the match, forced to make only one save. Second clean sheet of the season.

Will Smallbone - Southampton 6

Got stuck in early and understood the tempo and atmosphere of the game. Had one of Southampton's first shots but saved behind for a corner. Not as involved after the break.

Ryan Manning - Southampton 6

Replaced Bree after 70 minutes. Quite a bit going forward. Gave the ball away with his first action. Some good work bringing the ball out the back soon after led to a Kamaldeen chance.

Finn Azaz - Plymouth 8 (Star Man)

Continued his excellent recent form with another very influential performance. Came up with the assist for Bali Mumba's 34th minute goal which made it 1-1 with a precise pass, and then scored a terrific goal four minutes later with a curling right-foot shot beyond the reach of goalkeeper Seny Dieng. Has become a key player for the Pilgrims in their Championship campaign.

Alan Browne - Preston 9 (Star Man)

Emphatic performance from the captain, who stuck his penalty away and ran himself into the ground from start to finish. Did both sides of the game exceptionally well. A Man of the Match display.

Robbie Brady - Preston 6

Replaced Best for the final 15 minutes and helped see the points home.

Will Keane - Preston 6

Closed the ball down and worked hard in the final few minutes.

Georgie Kelly - Rotherham 8

Georgie doing what Georgie does. Beautiful striker's goal. Perfect place, perfect finish. Give him a chance inside the box and he'll rarely waste it. Capable of changing a game from the bench and that's exactly what he did here.

Jimmy Dunne - QPR 6

Caught out badly in the first half by a ball over the top that almost resulted in a goal. Made some solid headed clearances, but never looked comfortable. Did make one excellent run down the line.

Sinclair Armstrong - QPR 6

Thrown on for Dykes and his pace unsettled the home defence.

Jack Bonham - Stoke 7

Took command at Cardiff corners and was well positioned to deal with any shots, particularly low late save vs Wintle.

Enda Stevens - Stoke 6

A couple of useful blocks at corners and largely steady work, a couple of misplaced passes aside, at left-back.

Luke McNally - Stoke 7

Reading the game well at the moment, stepping up to make sure he takes responsibility along the back line.

Sean McLoughlin - Hull 6

A decent enough display on a day where City were in the game until the third goal. Came off near the end in a triple change.

Harry Vaughan - Hull 5

The game passed him by after coming on and so did Diangana who steamed past him for the third goal.

Cyrus Christie - Hull 5

Tried to get forward in the closing stages with the game gone.

Scottish Premiership

Liam Scales - Celtic 9 (Star Man)

Hard done by with VAR as he showed his goal threat. The big Irishman struck a sweet half volley inside the County box as he thought he'd put his side into the lead. Tidy on ball the too, with two neat flicks into the box putting it on a plate for Turnbull then Kyogo, who just couldn't finish. Another top display from the surprise of the season. He absolutely bossed it.

5/11/23

Premier League

Chiedozie Ogbene - Luton 9

Continues to be the one that really gets the crowd going, with the buzz whenever he is on the ball audible at all times. Clearly told to try and get at Alexander-Arnold on the left flank as he managed to do so in the first half a few times, his final ball not quite reaching its target. Ambitiously went for goal when others were well placed after the break, before one wonderful lung-busting foray saw him reach the area and pick out Morris who couldn't quite beat Alisson. Fouled three times as Liverpool struggled to contain him.

Championship

Shane Duffy - Norwich 3

Fortunate to retain his place after an error- riddled Sunderland display. Now suspended for Cardiff after a yellow card for a crunching challenge on Dolan that smacked of frustration shortly after the interval.

Sliding interception unable to cut out Joe Rankin- Costello's pass for the opener. Then got dragged into midfield, and played around for the Szmodics' slot. Did time his challenge on Callum Brittain with Blackburn sensing a third inside the opening half an hour.

Sam Szmodics - Blackburn 8

Took both his goals very well. Didn't look 100 per cent fit and yet still worked tirelessly for 90 minutes.

Andrew Moran - Blackburn 8

Two assists for the Irishman, who justified his recall to the Championship side. Second was a stand out as he picked Szmodics out at the back post.

7/11/23

Champions League

Liam Scales - Celtic 5

Another European game in which he did not do a lot wrong individually. His passing was solid enough and he did okay up against the opposition forwards, albeit not as well as the match at Parkhead.

Championship

Georgie Kelly - Rotherham 6

Usually makes an impact off the bench and did again. Put himself about and almost scored.

Marcus Harness - Ipswich 6

Starting in place of the ill Nathan Broadhead, Saturday's two goal hero gave the ball away cheaply a couple of times early on while contributing his usual effort and endeavour. Had some nice touches after the break and never stopped running, but would perhaps have wanted to do more with his starting opportunity.

Jack Taylor - Ipswich 7

Looked like he was the match winner, until the late, late drama. A scruffy goal, but he won't care a jot. The result will take the edge off though.

League 1

Peter Kioso - Peterborough 5

Not sure if he was still feeling the effects of his injury but it just didn't happen for the Posh captain. Unable to offer much going forward and struggled against the lively Jones. The cross that was allowed in for the first goal came from his side.

9/11/23

Europa League

Evan Ferguson - Brighton 6

Did nothing of note after coming on but could have been gifted an easy goal if Mitoma squared a pass instead of taking the shot on himself.

Caoimhin Kelleher - Liverpool 6

Confident with the ball at his feet and passed well first half, and not much chance with any of the goals.

Europa Conference League

Jamie McGrath - Aberdeen 8

Take nothing away from Jamie McGrath’s long-range free-kick, which was sweetly struck, but a limp-wristed Kutarski ought to have kept it out. Not that the pocket of Aberdeen fans at the other end of the stadium cared a jot.

10/11/23

Championship

Sam Szmodics - Blackburn 7

Took his goal really well with a calm finish past Woodman. That's now 10 for the season and he could've had another too.

Andrew Moran - Blackburn 7

Very quiet in the first half but came into the game after the break. Lovely assist for Szmodics with a floated pass over the defence.

Alan Browne - Preston 9 (Star Man)

Playing out of his skin at the moment. His goal was sensational and the Irishman left everything out there. Yet another captain's performance of the highest order.

Will Keane - Preston 6

Got through an hour. Worked hard up there to link the game and bring others into it. Sent a header over in the first half from a Storey cross.

Robbie Brady - Preston 6.5

Intense in his work and did well off the bench.

11/11/23

Premier League

Matt Doherty - Wolves 6

Looked far more assured than Semedo at right wing-back, though was booked in the latter stages.

Dara O'Shea - Burnley 6

Made some important interceptions in the final third but perhaps could have done better in the lead up to Arsenal’s second.

Michael Obafemi - Burnley 6

Missed a chance at the end to pull a goal back as he made his return from a serious long-term injury.

Chiedozie Ogbene - Luton 7

Like the rest of his team-mates, wasn’t able to really have too much of an impact in the opening 45 minutes as United bossed possession for the majority of proceedings, although was still able to venture upfield and unleash one effort that was easy for Onana. Started to become more of a threat after the break, lifting the hope in the away end, but United were wise to his danger and often doubled up on the Irish international to cut out his routes to goal.

Championship

Mark McGuinness - Cardiff 8

Was as solid as a rock and put in a number of big tackles and won aerial duels. Made a goal-saving block from Christian Fassnacht just after the break, too.

Callum Robinson - Cardiff 8

Really coming into his own at the moment. Did all the work to set up Bowler's goal before outleaping his marker to score one himself. Good to see him enjoying himself again.

Adam Idah - Norwich 7

Right man, right place for Norwich to underline his predatory instincts when the ball drops in the area are as sharp as any in this squad. Also showed his touch, reversing a pass into the feet of Rowe to drive on and test Alnwick. Offered more of a physical presence and a target than Hwang.

Jack Bonham - Stoke 6

His hardest game back but determined not to be beaten and didn’t shy away from making decisions. Heart beating fast when caught in possession.

Enda Stevens - Stoke 6

Had a tough battle with the power of Ellis Simms and didn’t always come out on top.

Luke McNally - Stoke 6

A growing presence at centre-back but almost blotted his copy book here when he was caught in possession on edge of own box.

Sean McLoughlin - Hull 7

Steady in the opening period but was barely tested. The same applied in the second half before he was replaced in favour of Aaron Connolly.

Cyrus Christie - Hull 6

Got forward well and tried to do what he could to get an end product.

Aaron Connolly - Hull 6

Found it tough to get into the flow of the game. Took a kick when he tried to bundle in from Delap's header off the bar. Had to go off.

Jack Taylor - Ipswich 9 (Star Man)

Exceptional on his first home league start. Trademark finish to get Town back into the game, and it was clear they needed a moment of magic like that. A really exceptional strike. Other than that, he linked up play really well and battled hard.

Marcus Harness - Ipswich 6

Not quite as bright off the bench today. Nine touches and a frustrating moment where he picked the wrong pass, but offered some fresh legs regardless.

Finn Azaz - Plymouth 5

One of several reasons Argyle struggled for the opening hour at Elland Road was because they could not get Morgan Whittaker and Azaz on the ball high enough up the pitch to give the defence a breather at times and to try to create chances of their own. The effort was not lacking but the quality of the opposition and their style of play meant Azaz was not as effective as so often in recent matches.

Kasey McAteer - Leicester 4

A tough return to the starting line-up for the homegrown winger. Bar his cross for Dewsbury-Hall’s header, he wasn’t much of a threat, while he misplaced a fair amount of passes too. A mistake on the edge of his own box nearly proved costly as well.

Jimmy Dunne - QPR 7

Not always comfortable with the passing style reintroduced at QPR, but he made a decent fist of if and covered Kenneth Paal effectively when the left-back ventured forward.

Sinclair Armstrong - QPR 6

Worried City with his pace and power after coming on.

Max O’Leary - Bristol City 6

It was a good performance… but then again he had very little to do, whether that be having to make a save or claim any crosses. For the vast majority of the game he was acting as a distributor, just playing passes in between Zak Vyner and Rob Dickie.

Jason Knight - Derby 7

For 75 minutes it was a frustrating afternoon for Knight who just couldn’t get going in a deeper role alongside James. The effort was there, as it always is, but he just found himself crowded out and not able to influence the game. Andi Weimann’s withdrawal saw him move higher up as a midfield playmaker and he was a totally different player thereafter, firing a shot wide and sending Sykes clear on a couple of occasions.

Mark Sykes - Bristol City 6

A similar story to Knight in the sense he couldn’t properly get into the game until his countryman moved into the 10 but with that change, and as the game opened up, he found plenty of space to motor down the right and send in a series of crosses. You could maybe argue his delivery could have been a bit sharper, though.

Jeff Hendrick - Sheffield Wednesday 5

Did nothing to improve things in midfield.

Gavin Bazunu - Southampton 7

Comfortable and confident on the ball, aside from one first-half lapse. Quick off his line. Could not do anything about West Brom equaliser. Great save with his face in added time to keep Saints ahead.

Will Smallbone - Southampton 8 (Star Man)

Opened the scoring from close range, just about getting it over the line. Won all of his duels and regularly in shooting positions, albeit wasteful with later attempts. Forced off through injury after 53 minutes but good outing for him.

Ryan Manning - Southampton 6

Part of the build up for Armstrong's winner with a simple pass to Fraser. No obvious errors aside from one blazed-over free-kick.

Georgie Kelly - Rotherham 6

Added something to the attack when he came on. His 'gameness' makes him an awkward threat.

League 1

CJ Hamilton - Blackpool 6

Will rue his missed chance midway through the second half with the game still scoreless.

Eiran Cashin - Derby 8

Solid from the academy graduate who set his stall out early with a crunching challenge on Max Watters and defended really well. Utilised the ball well at times when required to spread the play at the back too.

Conor Hourihane - Derby 7

Not the most influential game from the skipper in terms of dictating play but he went about his work in a quiet and efficient manner and it is the unseen work that was most vital.

James Collins - Derby 8.5 (Star Man)

Won the penalty having showed good movement in the box to try to meet a Barkhuizen cross. Took responsibility for the kick himself which he blasted down the middle and then chested his second over the line. Gave Barnsley a problem all game, led the line well and is flying.

Stephan Negru - Oxford 7

Came on to help deal with the volume of crosses coming into the box.

Tyler Goodrham - Oxford 7

Helped the side get up the pitch during a tough spell.

Joe Rafferty - Portsmouth 7

Cleared Morrison’s cross off the line on 20 minutes when the scoreline was goalless and a couple of forays down the wing. But otherwise defensively solid.

Sean Raggett - Portsmouth 7

Has never let Pompey down and clearly an excellent deputy for the injured Poole. Revelled in the aerial battle with Leaburn and used possession well.

Conor Shaughnessy - Portsmouth 7

Should escape any criticism for conceding two goals with another dominant display from the impressive Irishman. Excelled in the air and used ball extremely well.

Baba Adeeko - Wigan 4

Jumped in to concede the penalty when he didn't need to, subbed an the hour.

League 2

Anthony Forde - Wrexham 6

Forde was solid for the duration, maybe just didn’t get involved as much as we know he can.

Thomas O’Connor - Wrexham 7

Thomas O’Connor was solid and deserving of a decent rating. Nothing to write home about but another who contributed to the clean sheet.

12/11/23

Premier League

Nathan Collins - Brentford 6

Got his head in the way of plenty of balls into the box but could only stop so many forward thrusts on his own.

Scottish Premiership

Liam Scales - Celtic 7

The Irishman celebrated his latest senior international call-up by strolling through this match. Very good on the ball and stepped into the midfield when he could.
