The UK TV rights to Ireland games after Euro 2024, including World Cup qualifiers, Euro qualifiers and Nations League games, look to have been sold to a company called Viaplay, so won't be on Sky anymore after the next Euros qualifiers.

Doesn't affect Irish based viewers obviously, but will be a pain in the arse for UK based supporters as it will be yet another subscription needed if you want to watch the games legally. No wonder firesticks are so popular.

No mention of Ireland games being included here.

Quote from the article:

"Viaplay will provide a comprehensive and innovative home for the Northern Ireland, Scotland and Wales National Team matches, as well as for all other third-party European national team matches played during the European Qualifiers for FIFA World Cup 2026 and UEFA EURO 2028, as well as the UEFA Nations League 2024 and 2026, including the UEFA Nations League Finals in 2025 and 2027."

Basically it's every UEFA international game other than England games. The report focuses on NI, Scotland and Wales as they are UK "nations" but it will cover Ireland games also.

I had understood it differently from another article I had read but this seems clear.

Well it does for Nations League game as they're currently exclusive to Sky Sports.

Yes, I don't think this covers that though, this relates to UK specific rights. Of course it's possible that Viaplay could buy the Irish rights to non-protected games like Nations League and friendlies also and then it would affect viewers in Ireland. I haven't seen anything to say that has happened though, but it seems like the Nations League games are leaving Sky so they will end up somewhere else, hopefully free to air.

As long as Sky Sports have the main rights to the Premier League they're not too bothered about the other stuff. If they lose the Premier League they're pretty much f**ked though.

Think this will lead me pull the plug on the sky sports package when it comes up for renewal. I watch more darts than football on it these days.

Be interesting to see where our friendlies and Nations League games end up. Be very handy if RTE or Virgin bought them. Thankfully out EQ and WQ games are legally protected

Sky could still buy the Irish rights it just means they would have to geolock them in the UK

What's the craic with our games being legally protected, is it just the government has said they'll always buy the rights to these games given their importance?

There is legislation that says certain sporting events must be kept on terrestrial TV.  It’s allowed by EU law once certain conditions are met like being a national team, being of general interest beyond just sports fans, having a certain audience share on average etc.  List changes every 3 years.

Rights are still purchased but have to shown free to air so pay tv channels obviously don’t bid for them

I suppose in theory sky could buy our free to air right and show them on sky one (or whatever its called these days). Probably makes no commercial sense for them to that though

Eamonn Dunphy:"I'll tell you who wrote it, Rod Liddle, he's the guy who ran away and left his wife for a young one".

Bill O'Herlihy: Ah ye can't be saying that now Eamonn

Looks like Viaplay are in serious financial difficulty and are pulling back from their markets outside Scandinavia to an extent. Not sure if it goes as far as giving back the international football rights they hold just yet (which includes rights to show Ireland games across Europe, other than in Ireland), but there could be some implications for people outside Ireland looking to watch Ireland games and also for the FAI in terms of any resulting financial loss.
