Why is 1st February considered the start of Spring in Ireland but it's the 1st March in Britain and America?

Had this argument when i moved to the Uk. It's strange that it is only us who start spring at the correct time :)

Our's is based on the celestial calendar, the winter solstice (December) is the mid point of winter and the summer solstice (June) is the midpoint of Summer and then the seasons are divided according to that.

Gregorian calendar V Gaelic Calendar

Gregorian is based off the temperatures (Feb tends to be colder than Nov so Feb is in Winter)
Gaelic is based off the sun/stars (equinox is mid-Dec, so Winter is the months equal distance of that, Nov, Dec, Jan)

In reality our winter is 4 months long and our Autumn is only 2 months.  You could argue our Spring is 6 months long and we have a week of summer.

Go to New York and November is much better than February is. You could have a really nice day in November, unlikely until Feb when the snow is usually still there.

I believe October is warmer than May in the EIRE.

Edit: Actually think its September but October is similar to May I think
