68 goals in 62 appearances for West Germany.  Ended his international career by scoring the winner in a World Cup Final, can't top that!

Apparently he chose to retire from internationals becuase he was hacked off at officials who wouldn't let wives and girlfriends in at the post-World Cup Final party?

Also, from reading accounts at the time, Gerd Muller wasn't much of a footballer.  He did however, have a supernatural ability to be at the right place at the right time to score.

On his first day at training at 17, the Munich coach said “who let this baby elephant in ?”.

Some goal scoring record, for it's time it was a real outlier until Ronaldo and Messi came along

It would damage this forums' reputation

Remember as a kid we used play a street football game called World Cup, a knock game where everyone played against each other and a player was eliminated after each round. Everyone picked a country at the start and I always picked W Germany and pretended I was Gerd Muller.

I was explaining this to my nephews and they never heard of it.
Nowadays they all play organised football matches rather than jumpers for goal posts and World Cup etc

World Cup could go on for hours. It used to be that if you won the game youd have to go in goal for the next game, so most kids wanted to lose the final. Other games were 3 and yer in and Head n Volleys. Yeh, and it was always sunny..

And the game was over when the kid that owned the ball had to go in for his tea.

I was always prepared to take the hit of going in goals for a win. One goal to qualify each round until the semi when there were three players left and it was first two to score two into the final. Always an advantage to be the first to qualify and let the other two knacker themselves out trying to join you. Final was basically three and in. Brilliant game.
