This competition really should have been for the countries that never get anywhere like Ireland. There's no need for the big leagues to be in it. A small club in England winning is of no benefit to anyone.

I think you'll find West Ham will disagree with you on that. As would Fiorentina fans, if they had won it. Like the League Cup, there will be the big fish in the small pond, and there will always be at least one that will set their sights on it. Also, finals like Roma v Feyenoord and West Ham v Fiorentina will give the competition a prestige in its early days.

Jackal is right IMO. A tournament that excludes teams from the top 10-15 leagues would be more beneficial to football development in Europe. 40% of PL teams are in European Competitions now next year. Yet not a single team from Ireland is gaurenteed a spot in the group stages of any of the 3 European competitions in comparison.

Spain Italy and England dominating the finals this year. Add in Munich from the recent past aswell. Its becoming a more closed shop and being dressed up as widening the franchise to more nations. All nonsense and all to generate more money.

There used to be 3 European tournaments though for teams from all of the top leagues in the European Cup, UEFA Cup and Cup Winners Cup

Bit of a double-edged sword. A tournament that excludes top nations will just be consigned to mickey mouse status, probably wouldn't do so well commercially either. Think the idea of seeing clubs from lesser nations winning is very romantic though LOL

I tend to agree it's abit like the EFL League trophy now that Includes Premier League academy sides.

But teams from smaller, and less successful leagues are making it into the group stages. Latvia, Lichtenstein, Kosovo, Lithuania and Cyprus all had representatives in the group stages of the tournament this year. Last year, Gibraltar, Azerbaijan and Kazakhstan had representatives in the group stages. That provides for more meaningful European football into the winter, and an opportunity for gradual development at a European level. A team actually winning the tournament, from a smaller league, would have negligible benefits for Europe, on a broader level. It would be a big day out for the fans of the club, but it wouldn't do much for the teams that went out in the earlier rounds. The Conference League is bringing European football to a wider franchise.
