did some digging, you have to go back more than a decade for the last Irish player to scored a goal in European competition in Greece

At international level, he looked excellent against Gibraltar. He looked poor against the Netherlands when we were chasing a score. He looked okay in games where we were not chasing a goal. He looks good in the SPL. He has been deemed not good enough in England at League One and Championship, albeit at a basket case club.
I think it is quite clear that he has a ceiling and can serve a purpose against weaker teams or against better opposition that we are trying to contain. Otherwise, against comparable or better opposition when we are trying to win he just is not at the required level. That is my view anyway and I think there's enough evidence to say that. I think Daryl Horgan had a similar profile and eventually made way. I think McGrath is benefitting from Kenny knowing and trusting him and being in a position where it isn't in his interests to take a risk and consider Azaz or another alternative (not a huge MLS insider or fan but Ronan too perhaps, I'd leave Moran alone for the sake of the 21s).

Ybig has been around now what nearly 15 years and during that time it has always been the case that new players who are not in the squad are held up as having loads of talent and should be tried now and players who have been tried have been useless. Looking at the bigger picture during that time actually shows the talent of
The players has been decreasing in the main and that more often than not the existing player has been better that what was coming next. Lads get themselves worked up about marginal calls and it’s often over one lad who is knocking around at championship level over another lad who is doing the same. The way some people go it’s like managers have been holding back Evan Fergusons in favour of Job Mackens. McGrath is actually one of the players who has fitted in at international football and has played well against players who are playing at a way higher level than him.

I think overall McGrath has actually performed better for us than some of his colleagues who play for so called 'bigger' clubs.
He's on a decent run form at the moment too. Great goal last night, great goal at Ibrox a few weeks back 👏 |
