I think it's the same format that FIFA used for the 24-team world cups (86, 90 & 94) before they saw sense and increased it to 32 teams which made it more straight forward.

Exactly - it's perfect as it is. What are they talking about, 3-team groups? Another West Germany v Austria style carve-up anyone?

Yeah 3 team groups with two going through, as you say opens up the situation for a West Germany-Austria situation ,though I think Confederations will be separated so you won't have two European teams in the same group but still you might get a scenario were let's say Germany beat Japan in their opening game 3-0 and Japan then play Nigeria and it finishes 2-2. Nigeria then know anything less then a 4 goal defeat and we're through. Germans would know as well yeah we only need a point here to go through top of the group thanks to that result. |

It will be 32 teams soon which is better than 24 IMO. I don’t like having 36 games and only 8 teams going home after the group stage. It should be 48 games and 16 teams going home. |

It should be a 48 team Euros and a 96 team World Cup.

I think 3 team groups could work if a reward system is used.
The better your seeding the more rest days you have in the tournament. And also, if you win your group you are given a bye to a later round of the competition, while 2nd and 3rd placed teams have a to take part in a special play-off to decide who gets to stay in the tournament. a small example with just 2 groups: GROUP 1 Italy are top seeds and therefore play first and last matches. Results: Italy.................1-0 Switzerland Switzerland......2-2 Turkey Turkey..............0-2 Italy - Final Table: 1. Italy......................6 points 2. Switzerland..........1 point 3. Turkey..................1 point GROUP 2 Belgium are top seeds and therefore play first and last matches. Results: Belgium...........2-0 Russia Russia.............0-1 Denmark Denmark.........1-2 Belgium - Final Table: 1. Belgium................6 points 2. Denmark..............3 points 3. Russia..................0 points As group winners, both Italy and Belgium advance to the 2nd Round. While, in a Special Play-Off Round to determine who gets to also advance to the 2nd Round, it's: Switzerland v Russia and Denmark v Turkey Edited by Terzino - 01 Apr 2021 at 2:14pm |

Does anyone know why Qatar played a world cup qualifier today? Are they not automatic as hosts?

Asian qualifiers double as qualifiers for the Asian Championships as far as I know
