When I was In Bologna a phone was a no no. I suspect if you took a photo of a corner kick or had a half and half scarf then you'd be asked to leave.

Time of day, later will be better with people having had pints
Edit, missed it at the end!

Pints is definitely the wrong answer.

For me it’s the fans getting behind their team for 90 mins no matter what. Pure emotion and no drink needed.

Maybe that's something. A lot of the best atmospheres I've experienced have been hostile. There is something about menace in the air that is nervy or exciting.

Might not want it to be but there is a better atmosphere when people have had pints, certainly in Ireland and the UK

Yeah defo. When we played the Scots at home a years back, there was a fairly drunken crowd and the atmosphere was great by modern Lansdowne standards.

This was the Boca game I was referring to in my earlier post. I was in the terrace behind the goal.
Check out the challenge by the Boca keeper 4 mins into this vid. He gets a yellow. The game goes to penos and who steps up to take the winner? That is the tangible value of having a hostile home crowd. No ref in his right mind would have had the balls to send that keeper off.

I’m not denying that Irish people need some pints to get behind their team.
No pints would make a sh*te atmosphere.

But other countries/fans don’t need a rake of pints to cheer on their team.

A roof around all stands.

A boll#x of a ref.

Regularity of matches in the ground
People who regularly attend football and have a regular position in the ground create a much better atmosphere.
Our international matches suffer because we don't have more home games (though I'm not sure I'd have wanted to attend more of what we've had to watch for the last few years).

It's the upper tiers that need to be steep, not the lower tiers

See the classic Spanish grounds

The upper tiers also need to "lurk" out towards the pitch

The upper tiers of the Bernabeu are very "lurky"

A roof over stands is grand for real winter football but in World Cups and Euros you want as much sun to come into the stadium as possible, so open air is where it's at

The Azteca Stadium got away with this even though it had a roof because the sun was so high in the sky there

Would have loved to have gone to Maine Road. Four stands that didn't match and a temporary uncovered seating area stuck out in one of the corners about a mile from the pitch

Maine Road with the Kippax there was a fantastic ground

Good pitch as well, one of the best in England, along with Villa Park

FA Cup semi-finals there were very good, particularly replays under lights, the '85 Manchester United - Liverpool semi-final replay had an incredible atmosphere

United won 2-1, the f**king ****s, but the place shook that night

As Sid Mentioned the pitch was always in brilliant condition.i remember going in 1994 to see city and Sheffield Wednesday and to say the atmosphere was hostile was an understatement....a few running battles down the moss side streets before and after the game.it had become a bit of a kip in the early 2000s which kinda reflected the area.

Glentoran used to have one too, not sure if it’s still there
