And Stephen Ireland played for Ireland. Which, considering the surname is so uncommon in Ireland itself, was quite an unusual coincidence. The fact that he had a load of grannies was a strange coincidence though...

"Sam English", "Eric Welsh" and no fewer than 7 "Scotts" all represented the IFA, but no-one called "Ireland".

Harry Cavan ruled the IFA with an iron fist for decades Don't think he was a fan of the Breffni Blues But I think he was tight with money English is a common enough free state surname and a surname of some renown in GAA history, particularly hurling As is Welsh, not spelled that way but pronounced that way And of course Sam is always the forename on everybody's lips in Gaelic football Edited by sid waddell - 07 Dec 2020 at 2:08pm |

Aye, but when Cavan was born, the county was still part of the UK and the team was known as "Ireland". Though we don't want it back. Ever.
Maybe he didn't get it off the grass... Btw, Cavan's middle name was "Hartrick". I always assumed this was because his Mammy was a football fan who couldn't spell, but probably not: |
